'How Buhari’s Treasury Single Account Saved Nigeria Billions Of Naira' - Daily Times

By     No comments:

Already, President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to rid Nigeria of corruptive elements is fast yielding results as billions of naira are being saved in the process.

Shortly after his inauguration, President Buhari ordered every Federal Government Ministry, Department and Agencies to start paying into a Treasury Single Account (TSA) for all government revenues, incomes and other receipts.

The Daily Times gathered that through the implementation of the TSA, a whopping N8 billion was uncovered in a single account in an old generation bank. The said amount is said to be operated in the name of a defence operation account.

A text message to the Group Head, Marketing and Corporate Communications of the bank, to authenticate the story, was not responded to as at press time. Similarly, Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, did not also respond to a text message sent to him to speak on the alleged uncovering of the amount in the bank as at press time.

Col. Rabe Abubakar, Acting Director of Defence Information was also contacted through a text message but failed to respond to it as at press time.

It would be recalled that President Buhari had earlier promised state governors at the inaugural meeting of the National Economic Council, NEC, in June, that all revenues prescribed for lodgement into the federation account will be treated as such under his watch and that he will ensure strict compliance with all relevant laws on accounting, allocation and disbursement.

Since then, the Presidency has worked with relevant agencies of the Federal Government to evolve this policy directive.

This directive applies to fully funded organs of government like the Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Foreign Missions, as well as the partially funded ones, like Teaching Hospitals, Medical Centres, Federal Tertiary Institutions, etc.

Agencies like the CBN, SEC, CAC, NPA, NCC, FAAN, NCAA, NIMASA, NDIC, NSC, NNPC, FIRS, NCS, MMSD, DPR are also affected.

For any agency that is fully or partially self-funding, Sub-Accounts linked to TSA are to be maintained at CBN and the accounting system will be configured to allow them access to funds based on their approved budgetary provisions.

Global health body W.H.O clarifies on meat cancer warning

By     No comments:
WHO has warned that processed meats, including the popular Nigerian delicacies “suya” and “kilishi”, can cause cancer.

In an explosive report linking the consumption of red meat and cancer, The World Health Organization stressed that 50g of processed meat a day increases the chance of developing colorectal cancer by 18%.
The health body also reported that high temperature cooking on a barbeque can create carcinogenic – cancerous chemicals.
“For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal (bowel) cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,” Kurt Straif from the WHO said.
This new study caused shockwaves as even Nigerians reacted to the agency’s warning on twitter.
However, WHO acknowledged that the IARC’s review merely confirmed the UN health agency’s 2002 diet and nutrition recommendations, urging people “to moderate consumption of preserved meat to reduce the risk of cancer.”
It warned its data did “not permit” the determination of a safe meat quota.
The latest IARC review does not ask people to stop eating processed meats, but indicates that reducing consumption of these products can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer,” WHO said in a statement.
“Early next year they will meet to begin looking at the public-health implications of the latest science and the place of processed meat and red meat within the context of an overall healthy diet,” WHO said.

I Have Confidence In The Judiciary – Wike

By     No comments:
high court

Recent verdicts by the judiciary have been against Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike but his confidence remains unshaken in the institution to do justice in the state governorship legal tussle.
He pointed out that based on the April 11 election, his mandate would be upheld in the course of the Appeal process.
Speaking at the meeting of stakeholders, which included elected senators, House of Representatives members, traditional rulers, Elder statesmen and state legislators, Wike advised the people of the state never to criticize judges despite the judicial setback, pointing out that the appeal process will correct the judicial opinion of the state tribunal.
NYESOM WIKEHe dissociated himself from a statement from one of his aides describing the tribunal judgment as judicial terrorism and gang-up. He said the aide had no mandate to issue such a statement, noting that as a lawyer he respects the judiciary and knows the appellate process to seek redress.
“Be assured by the Grace of God our lawyers are working hard to file the appeal within stipulated time. I have told people that it is not in our character to cast aspersions on judges. I have also told people not to speak on my behalf to castigate judges. The tribunal is not the final appellate court on this matter. There is no need of castigating the judiciary.
“We are not one of those when judgment favours you, you says you have confidence in the judiciary. When it does not favour you, you lose confidence in the judiciary.
“I want to say in the past two days, you must have read where they quoted me as saying judicial terrorism or judicial gang-up, I never said so. And I never authorised anybody to say so on this matter,” Wike said.
The governor noted that his team of lawyers are working round the clock to complete the process of filing an appeal against the judgment.

AUN Clears Air On Wizkid’s Alleged Failed Appearance After Payment

By     No comments:
wizkid-2

A couple of days ago, Wizkid was accused by @mrtawati on Twitter for ignoring a concert at American University of Nigeria scheduled in November after he had been paid.
The rumor went round and Wizkid has to address the issue on Twitter, calling the story false.
Now AUN has released a statement denying that Wizkid had been paid for the show; according to the statement Wizkid could not make the earlier date because of a scheduling concert, and now both parties are in talks over a new date.
Read the press statement below:
We would like to clear the air on the issue about Wizkid performing at AUN. We have been in negotiations with his management about him performing at our annual Homecoming concert. However due to a scheduling conflict he will not be able to make it at that time. We want to make it clear that contrary to what has been going round on the Internet this event has not happened yet, neither have we paid any money to Wizkid or his representatives. Any information saying he reneged on our agreement is wrong as we are still in the process of selecting an alternative date.
“Many students were disappointed he could not make Homecoming and one person in expressing their disappointment made statements, which were picked up by social media sites, that are inaccurate and do not reflect our position on this issue. AUN does not have any quarrel with Wiz Kid and we look forward to welcoming him on our campus at a future date.

Photos: 12 people killed in Al-Shabaab terrorist attack on a hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia Yesterday

By     No comments:

At least 12 people were killed in the Somali capital today Sunday, November 1, after Al-Shabaab terrorist used a vehicle packed with explosives to blast their way inside Sahafi hotel in Mogadishu.
The Al-Qaeda linked Shabaab claimed responsibility for the dawn attack at the hotel, which is popular with members of parliament, government employees and businessmen.

"Attackers exploded a car bomb to gain entry before going inside... we have reports of 12 dead," policeman Abdulrahid Dahir said.

Witnesses said they had seen several bodies of people killed in the initial blast, when a minibus packed with explosives was reportedly used to ram the gates of the hotel's fortified compound, which was followed by a second heavy explosion.

Al-Shabaab commandos then stormed inside, with witnesses reporting intense gunfire and several loud blasts.
"There was a huge explosion and people around the entrance were killed," said Mohamed Ismael, a witness, who was nearby when the attack began.
Al-Shabaab spokesperson Abdulaziz Abu Musab claimed the gunmen had overrun the hotel, which is situated near the major K4 roundabout.

"The mujahedeen fighters took control of the Sahafi hotel, where apostates and invading Christians were staying," he said in a statement. "The mujahedeen are carrying out operations inside the hotel after the takeover."

But the African Union mission in Somalia, Amisom, a 22,000-strong force fighting the Shabaab, said they fought alongside government troops and had secured the hotel.
"Somalia government forces and Amisom have taken control," the AU force said in a brief statement.

In the latest report, government officials claims all the gunmen have been killed. Below are photos of Somalia MP Abi Abtidon and a former army commander General, Dhega-Badan killed in the hotel attack.
