76 Hungry Boko Haram Members Surrender To Nigerian Military

By     No comments:

Dozens of emaciated-looking Boko Haram members begging for food have surrendered in northeast Nigeria, the military and a civilian self-defense fighter said Wednesday.

Seventy-six people including children and women gave themselves up to soldiers last Saturday in Gwoza, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Maiduguri, according to a senior officer.

All are being detained at military headquarters in Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and currently the command center of the war against the Islamic extremists, according to the officer. He insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists.

The detainees said many more fighters want to surrender, a self-defense civilian fighter who helped escort them to Maiduguri told The Associated Press.

Food shortages could indicate that Nigeria's military is succeeding in choking supply routes of the Islamic extremists who have taken their fight across Nigeria's borders. Some 20,000 people have died in the 6-year-old uprising. Boko Haram was declared the deadliest of all terror groups in 2014, surpassing the Islamic State group to which it declared allegiance last year.

Nigeria's military reported that dozens of Boko Haram fighters were surrendering in September and October last year. It promised those who give themselves up voluntarily that they will be rehabilitated through a de-radicalization program.

In the 10 months since he took office promising to halt the insurgency, President Muhammadu Buhari has replaced the leadership of the military, moved the headquarters for the fight from the distant capital, Abuja, to the heart of the northeastern insurgency and resupplied soldiers.

The military has driven the insurgents from the towns and villages where they had set up an Islamic caliphate but Boko Haram has returned to hit-and-run tactics and suicide bombings.

Minister Expresses Concern As JAMB Releases 200,000 Results

By     No comments:

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Tuesday released results of 200,000 candidates who had written the examination even as the test continued.

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, disclosed this during the monitoring of the exercise in Abuja and its environs.

He explained that over 200,000 candidates’ results had been released since the examination commenced on Saturday.

Ojerinde spoke just as the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, expressed concern over the plight and difficulties faced by non-computer literate students sitting for the examination.

The minister expressed his reservation when he visited some centres in the FCT to monitor the on-going Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) being conducted by JAMB.

Adamu, however, said though he was satisfied with the conduct of the CBT mode of the examination, he was glad the board had addressed most of his concerns and other Nigerians.

He said: “I seem to be very comfortable and happy with what they are doing. But my question has not been answered; that there may be people who are not computer literate, so, what do you do with them. I do not have reservation about CBT but I have sympathy for those who are not computer literate and there are many of them.”

Notwithstanding the minister’s reservation, Ojerinde urged candidates who had sat for the examination to visit the JAMB’s website and check their respective results.

According to him, “More than one million, eight hundred and fifty thousand candidates applied to take the examination nationwide in 2016.

“The figures however recorded a slight increase of 113,673 candidates who applied for the examination in 2015.”

JAMB kick-started full Computer Based Testing (CBT) in 2014 after eliminating the Paper Pencil Testing (PPT) system within that same period.

Prof. Ojerinde further informed journalists that government had reached out to the National Communications Commission (NCC) to produce at least four new CBT centres annually.

“National Communications Commission has been mandated to give us at least four centres every year. Meanwhile, the first four are fully completed, the next four would soon be built and with time every nook and crannies of the country will have functional CBT centres,” Ojerinde said.

Robert Mugabe proposes "castration" for rapists who rape children

By     No comments:

President Robert Mugabe has come up with a solution to the growing rate of rape and child abuse cases. He said that castration of rapists and child abusers is the best way to stem the vice. The Zimbabwean president reportedly made this known while speaking during his 92nd birthday celebrations at the Great Zimbabwe Monuments on Saturday, February 26.

Mugabe said he was confused by people who abuse minors.
"What sex impulse is it which gets one to abuse a little child? I wonder what enough punishment for such people is," he said. "Can you suggest how such brutal monsters amongst us that rape babies should be punished … burdizzo (castration device) We should make them oxen, some people should be made oxen."
However, Mugabe noted that the government is going to attract the wrath of human rights defenders if it were to go ahead with such a plan.
"Again, human rights people will say it (castration) is too severe. Sharia Law says if you use your hand to steal, that hand must be cut off. Now you use what to abuse the child? I think that which you use should be cut off. They will go and get an artificial one (I)think," he said, amid laughter and applause from the thousands of villagers who braved the light showers that characterised the event.
The proposal seemed to get the backing of Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko and Women’s Affairs minister Nyasha Chikwinya, Zimbabwe Southern Eye reports.
