Boko Haram: Critics Doubting Military’s Success Free To Visit Borno To See Things For Themselves – FG
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday said the recent attacks by the Boko Haram sect would not dampen the federal government’s resolve to rout them out.
The minister, who spoke at a media briefing in Lagos, insisted that since fighting insurgency is not the same thing as fighting conventional wars in which guns could be silenced with an armistice, Boko Haram attacks would only taper off with time amidst better awareness among the citizenry and enhanced intelligence gathering by security agencies.
According to Mr. Mohammed, the fact that Boko Haram has continued to carry out attacks on soft targets does not mean that the sect still has the capacity to fight.
“As I have said many times, the attacks will not end with the expiration of the deadline. All Boko Haram can do now is to attack soft targets-markets, motor parks, mosques and entertainment centres, killing innocent men, women and children in the process”, he said.
“Our armchair critics who are not yet convinced that we have defeated Boko Haram as promised are free to take a trip to the theatre of war to see things for themselves. I’ve been to the theatre of war and come back. I was in Konduga, Maiduguri and Bama, the headquarters of the Boko Haram caliphate. Those who still think or say the Boko Haram sect has not been defeated should visit these places and tell Nigerians what they see there”, the Minister insisted.
Mohammed also commended the Civilian JTF, which he said was playing a major role in assisting the military to rout the terrorists.
“We have kick-started a campaign to raise awareness among Nigerians on the war, so that the citizens will not only support the war but also own it. It is a war for all Nigerians, not a war for the military alone. As the military enters the mop-up phase of this war, what is left now is the onerous task of resettlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction, especially in the North-east, which is worst-hit. We appeal for support from all Nigerians in this regard, because the government alone cannot handle this task”, he added.
On the allegation that allowances of troops on the battlefront were yet to be paid, the minister said: “I doubt very much if the allegation is true because the welfare of our soldiers has been well taken care of by President Muhammadu Buhari. The welfare of the fighting soldiers is paramount to him”.
Reacting to statements credited to Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, who disagreed that the military had met the December deadline to end the Boko Haram activities and asked the Minister to explain why the “technically” defeated sect was still carrying out deadly attacks, Mohammed said: “All the critics have another agenda rather than what Nigerians have attested to. We expect Nigerians to commend the efforts of our gallant soldiers. When the insurgents sneak in and carry out cowardly acts against the people, it doesn’t mean our soldiers are not working. A few months ago, it was not possible for people to travel to Bama, Konduga and other parts of Borno State from Maiduguri. Today, people are moving freely. So, what else do the critics want?”
Appeal Court Reverts Tribunal Judgment On Taraba Governorship Election
The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has reversed the judgement of the Taraba State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which sacked governor Darius Ishaku of the People Democratic Party (PDP) and declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Aisha Alhassan winner.
In a unanimous judgment this afternoon, the appellate court panel headed by Justice Justice Abdul Aboky, held that the tribunal acted outside its jurisdiction when it invalidated Ishaku’s election on the premise that he was not validly nominated by the PDP.
The appellate court maintained that the issue of nomination of a candidate by a political party “is clearly a pre-election matter which no tribunal has the jurisdiction to entertain”.
The court maintained that neither the All Progressives Congress, APC, nor its candidate, Senator Aisha Jumai Alhassan, had the locus-standi to query the outcome of the governorship primary election of the PDP.
“There is no dispute whatsoever in this case that the 1st and 2nd respondents have not said that the appellant is not a member of a political party. From the pleadings and facts, it is obvious that the appellant is a member of the PDP,” the court held.
The court held that under section 87(9) of the Electoral Act, only those that participated in the said PDP primary election has the right to challenge its outcome at the Federal High Court or State High Court.
“The right to complain is severely limited to participants in the primary election. Whether the primary election was done rightly or wrongly cannot be subject of an election petition.
“The most important question to be asked here is, was the appellant a member of a political party or sponsored by a party to participate at the election?
“All evidence before the tribunal pointed to the fact that the appellant was duly sponsored by the PDP and INEC duly received his nomination. INEC did not at any time queried his eligibility to participate in the election.
“Both oral and documentary evidence before the tribunal clearly showed that the appellate was a member of the PDP and was validly sponsored.
“I hold that the 1st and 2nd respondents have no right to challenge the primary election at which the appellant emerged as none of them is a member of the PDP.
“Nomination of a candidate to participate in an election is the sole responsibility of a political party. Issue of nomination of candidate is within the domestic affair of a political party”, the court added.
Besides, the court held that the tribunal “grossly misdirected itself”, when it not only nullified governor Ishaku’s election, but went ahead to declare the candidate of the APC, Alhassan, winner.
“There is no basis for the finding of the lower tribunal”, Justice Aboky held, saying the tribunal had no power whatsoever to declare a person that came second at an election as the winner.
It said the best the tribunal could have done under section 142 of the constitution was to order for a fresh poll.
“I hereby make the following consequential orders. The order of the tribunal made on November 7 is hereby set-aside. The election and return of the appellant in theApril 11 election is hereby upheld.
“The Certificate of Return issued to the appellant by the 4th respondent in this matter remains valid. I make no order as to cost,” the court held.
Arms Deal: Tell The People How You Collected N1.4bn And Bought A House In Abuja, APC To Fayose
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has challenged Governor Ayodele Fayose to tell the people of the state how much he got from the N1.4 billion allegedly collected from the Office of the National Security Adviser by a former minister from the South-West to prosecute the Ekiti governorship election of June 2014.
A statement by the Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, quoted the party to have said it was clear that Fayose collected part of the arms cash that was mindlessly diverted by former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd).
“We are aware that Fayose at that time acquired a N750 million building in a choice area of Abuja from the proceeds of this fund,” the APC said.
“We are equally aware that Fayose submitted a bill of N30 billion to the then President Goodluck Jonathan as the amount he would require to unseat then Governor Kayode Fayemi.
“A certain amount was approved for the project out of which the soldiers, who were used to rig the election, were paid as well as INEC officials who released the soft copies of sensitive materials to Fayose to enable him have advantage over other candidates,” Olatunbosun explained.
“We are demanding that Governor Fayose should come out and tell Ekiti people how much he received from the Armsgate money and the property he acquired with the fund while we also call on the EFCC to beam its searchlight on Fayose to know how much is traceable to him and a governor in a neighbouring state who coordinated the disbursements of the funds with which the Ekiti election was rigged with the connivance of the military,” Adelusi said.
However, in a swift response, Fayose, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi said if the APC is sure of what it is saying and has a very clear evidence, it should submit it to the EFCC instead of making noise about.
“Let it be known to the APC that nothing can stop Governor Ayo Fayose from criticizing the misrule and archaic policies of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Fayose is prepared more than ever before to continue to represent the voiceless Nigerians and we cannot watch it and allow Buhari to turn Nigeria into a fascist state.”
R&B Diva, Mariah Carey Engaged[Photos]
New reports suggest that Mariah Carey is engaged to billionaire boyfriend, James Parker.
These reports emerged after a shiny diamond was noticed on her ring finger on December 30.
The glamorous 45-year-old was accompanied by her man to the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia on Wednesday night as she dripped in diamonds (as usual) but it was the shiniest of them rings on her left finger that has people talking.
A close inspection of her Instagram shows a de-glammed Mariah with no jewelry on her fingers Dec. 29, and if Mariah was actually engaged, you better believe she’d be letting the entire world know!
Instead she posted a photo of herself in front of a private plane waving to the camera with a caption, “That jet-set life” while her left hand is ring-free.

Davido And Family Stopped At Airport, Accused Of Child Abduction By Babymama
Fresh drama is ongoing between the family Nigerian superstar singer, Davido and his babymama; as they have been accused of trying to abduct his baby girl Imade Adeleke from her mother Sophia Momodu.
According to a petition filed to the director general National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and made available by Naij.com, the singer’s sister Ashley Coco Adeleke and his father Mr Deji Adeleke yesterday, Tuesday, December 29, allegedly tried to travel to Dubai with the baby but were stopped by Mrs. Modupe Mofikoya, an immigration officer who attended to the Adeleke travelling party.
However Davido’s manager, Kamal Ajiboye has denied the allegations raised in the petition. Claiming that Imade’s mum was a drug addict and the child needed to be taken from her.
“The baby was taken away from her due induced drugs found in her (baby) system which she obviously got through the mother’s chest. David’s family is only helping her and the baby,” he said. David’s family prevented him (David) from reporting her to the NDLEA and as we speak, the baby was recently treated in Dubai. The baby cannot even breathe properly. The family has done everything to take care of the mother and child. We rented an apartment for her and she gets three hundred thousand naira monthly as upkeep. What else will the family do? To be honest, not sane family will take a child away from the mother for no reason,” Kamal explained.
As more details of this story emerges, be rest assured that The herald will keep you updated.

Dear Madam,
PETITION AGAINST MISS ASHLEY COCO ADELEKE & MR ADEDEJI ADELEKE FOR ATTEMPTED CHILD TRAFFICKING AND ABDUCTION OF MISS AURORA IMADE ADELEKE
We act as Solicitors for Miss. Sophia Ajibola Momodu, (hereinafter referred to as our client) whose instructions we have to forward this petition to your esteemed Agency.
Our client, a 27 year old, is the biological mother of a baby girl with name, Aurora Imade Adeleke, who was born on the 14th day of May 2015. The baby’s father is Mr. David Adedeji Adeleke (aka Davido). The father and mother are unmarried.
On the 11th July, 2015, our client was tricked to visit the house of Mr. David Adedeji Adeleke’s half sister – Miss Ashley Coco Adeleke’s with her baby, Imade Aurora Adeleke. After getting to the house on Baderinwa Alabi Street, Lekki Phase I, Lagos, our client’s baby was forcefully taken from her and she was thrown out of the premises with the threat that she would be decisively dealt with if she ever bothered to return there. There were armed policemen in the premises and our client’s survival instinct prevailed on her to make her leave her chest suckling baby behind, with so much pain in her heart.
By daybreak on the next day, our client was again at Ashley Coco Adeleke’s house to take her baby, but she was prevented by armed policemen from gaining access into the house. She was again threatened and warned never to return for the child.
Since July 2015, our client, who has now become so disorientated, saddened and confused has been going to family members, including her cousin, Mr Dele Momodu, and other well meaning Nigerians to intervene and allow her get her baby back or at least allow her to be able to have access to and care for her daughter. This was frustrated by Coco Adeleke, David Adeleke and their father, Mr. Adedeji Adeleke. These people boasted to our client and all her family and friends that our client is a nonentity and of little substance in Nigeria. They also claim that they have the financial wherewithal and political and security clout to deal with her and her family anyhow and without any consequence with the aid of their brother and uncle, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, and other friends Mr Deji Adeleke purportedly has in government. In a bid to justify their actions, Mr Deji Adeleke and his daughter, Ashley Coco Adeleke, have been spreading several malicious and unfounded allegations about our client.
While the attempts at finding a peaceful and lasting solution were still ongoing, on Tuesday the 29th December 2015, Ashley Coco Adeleke and her father, Mr Deji Adeleke, tried to travel to Dubai with our client’s baby. The baby was meant to be flown out of the country with Nigerian and American passports. Prior to that date, our client and her cousin, Mr Dele Momodu, had gone to alert the immigration services at the Murtala Mohammed, Ikeja International airport of the likelihood of Ashley Coco Adeleke travelling with our client’s baby by pretending to be the Mother. Our client believes that her baby’s American passport was hidden and is now likely to be in possession of Mr Deji Adeleke or Ashley Coco Adeleke. It appears that the assistance of Emirates Airline was sought as the baby’s American passport was not produced in breach of aviation regulations. Neither was a letter of authority from the mother to confirm her consent to the trip produced despite the airline being alerted.
When Mrs. Modupe Mofikoya, the immigration officer who attended to the Adeleke travelling party accosted Ashley Coco Adeleke and asked for the mother of the baby, Ashley Adeleke claimed that she was the mother. Immediately, the immigration officer on duty collected her Nigerian international passport, she quickly absconded from the scene with the baby and her father, Mr Deji Adeleke, showed up shortly afterwards to try to clear his daughter’s mess.
Our client with the help of her family members, including Mr Dele Momodu, determinedly resisted the attempt by Miss Ashley Coco Adeleke and her father, Mr Deji Adeleke, from taking Aurora Imade Adeleke from Lagos yesterday. Our client believes that the pair are trying to take the child to America and thus put her out of the reach of the biological mother.
At the moment, Miss Ashley Coco Adeleke and our client’s daughter, Aurora Imade Adeleke
are still in Lagos and two of their respective international passports are in the custody of the airport immigration services. Our client’s fear now, is that Ashley Coco may use her Nigerian passport and Aurora Imade’s American passport to travel through other Nigerian or West African airports.
We know that the actions of Mr Deji Adeleke and Miss Ashley Coco Adeleke contravene many provisions of the law. One is Section 13 of the Childs Right Law 2007 of Lagos State (as adapted from the Federal Act), which guarantees Aurora Imade Adeleke’s right to parental care and protection. That law also forbids separation of a child from her parents. Another is Section 24 of the same law, which also prohibits abduction of a child from the lawful custody of her parents. Neither Mr Deji Adeleke or Ms Ashley Coco Adeleke has any lawful right to the custody of Aurora Imade Adeleke. Even the unmarried father, Mr David Adedeji Adeleke, only has limited rights to the child and certainly not to the exclusion of our client, the natural mother as the Adeleke’s are trying to do.
We are of the sound view that your Agency is the most viable organisation that can intervene in the plight of our client and save her from the untold trauma that she is going through in the hands of Mr Deji Adeleke and Ashley Coco Adeleke, who has her own child that she keeps with her. We have advised our client about the statutory powers of your Agency to potently investigate and enforce all the provisions of the law that deal with abduction and trafficking in persons.
We urge you to use your good offices to intervene in the case of our client and protect a baby who should still be under her mother’s care from being abducted and smuggled abroad.
We thank you.
Yours faithfully,
1. O. AJAYI & CO./Gbolaga Ajayi Esq.
N1.04trn Fine: We Expect No Operation Disruptions For Not Paying Fine – MTN
MTN Nigeria has said it did not expect any service disruption on its network as deadline for payment of N1.04 trillion fine, later reduced to N780 billion by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, expired yesterday.
The fine, which according to NCC, was against the inability of MTN to disconnect about 5.1 million subscribers allegedly not properly registered on its network in August and September 2015, was meant to be paid on or before December 31, 2015.
However, the Commission, also yesterday, said it would take fresh decision Monday, after confirming that MTN did not pay the N780 billion fine before the close of work on deadline day, December 31, 2015.
A reliable source at the Commission, said: “I can confirm to you that MTN did not pay the fine before close of work today (yesterday) and so the Commission will take a fresh decision on the issue Monday.
“The telecom operator actually went to court to challenge the fine and the Federal Government has also lined up very respectable lawyers, who also counter-sued the company.
“Both cases did not invalidate the fine, which means that MTN should have honoured the payment deadline. But having not done so, we are going to come up with a new decision on the fine by Monday.”
Reacting, MTN Nigeria’s External Relations Manager, Mr. Funso Aina said that “when a case is in court, there is a limit to the comments that could be made, suffice it to say that based on the lis pendens rule (pending legal action) all parties are enjoined to restrain from taking further action until the matter is finally determined.
“Notwithstanding the lawsuit, we will continue to engage with the Nigerian Authorities to try and ensure an amicable resolution in the best interests of the company, its stakeholders and the Nigerian authorities. We urge our customers not to panic as we do not envisage any disruption to our operations.”
