Saudi Arabia will pay a 'high price' for Shia cleric's execution, says Iran

By     No comments:

Saudi Arabia will pay "a high price" for executing prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr on Saturday, Iran’s foreign ministry said. Ministry spokesperson Hossein Jaber Ansari strongly condemned the execution, which came after his Shia country repeatedly asked its Sunni-ruled rival to pardon the cleric.

"The Saudi government supports terrorist movements and extremists, but confronts domestic critics with oppression and execution... the Saudi government will pay a high price for following these policies," he said, quoted by the official IRNA news agency.

Nimr, 56, was a driving force of the protests that broke out in 2011 in Eastern Province, where the Shia minority of Saudi Arabia complains of marginalisation.

"The execution of a figure like Sheikh al-Nimr, who had no means to follow his political and religious goals but through speaking out, merely shows the extent of irresponsibility & imprudence," said Ansari.

Search For Lai Mohammed’s Replacement Intensifies

By     No comments:
Image result for Lai Mohammed

Barely two months after the former National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, vacated his position, search for his replacement has begun, Daily Trust gathered.
An impeccable source within the party, who preferred not to be mentioned, said already some influential party leaders and political groups in the party have started strategizing for their candidates to succeed Mohammed.
The out-spoken former publicity secretary was recently appointed Minister of Information, hence making his former office vacant.
Daily Trust gathered that so far, some influential politicians from the South-south, South-west and the North have started preparing their candidates for the seat.
Among the contenders for the vacant position are Mr. Joe Igbokwe, Mr. Tim Frank, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin and Alhaji Bashir Hayatu, alias Gentile.
Mr. Igbokwe is the publicity secretary of the APC in Lagos State and is said to be the choice for South-west politicians, among them former Lagos State governor and APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It was gathered that Tinubu and co plan to retain Mohammed’s seat.
Mr. Tim Frank is the current deputy national publicity secretary of the party. He has been a deputy to Lai Mohammed since June 2014 when the National Working Committee of the party was inaugurated.
According to a source within the party, Frank is said to be enjoying the support of some influential politicians from the South-south and the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
However, Frank’s loyalty to Saraki, according to a party stalwart might be an obstacle to him in the race. He said: “With the challenges faced by Saraki, I don’t think Frank will emerge the next publicity secretary of the party.”
He also said that going by the current internal arrangements within the party in respect of positions, Frank will not succeed Muhammad without some adjustments.
However, for the Buhari Organisation, it is high time President consolidates the party by ensuring that his loyalist occupies the seat. In view of this, they prefer the former publicity secretary of President Buhari’s defunct party, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, to be the APC’s next spokesman.
Fashakin has a brighter chance of becoming the next APC spokesman for some reasons:
One: he has been together with President Buhari and some notable leaders of the APC for a very long time.
Two: he knows the job very well having held the position of publicity secretary of the defunct CPC for many years.
And three: he enjoys the support of the Buhari Organisation.
Next after Fashakin is another out-spoken politician from Kano State, Alhaji Bashir Hayatu, alias Gentile. Daily Trust gathered that, Gentile enjoys the support of two strong politicians and national leaders of the APC.
A source close to the two influential party leaders, among them a serving governor in the North-west, hinted Daily Trust that the politicians are preparing Gentile for the job.
“The two leaders wanted to encourage young politicians to take over the lot of politics in the country, hence preferring Gentile to replace the former national publicity chairman of the party,” said the source.
Like Fashakin, Gentile also knows the job of publicity having served as director of publicity of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Kano between 2007 and 2011 and director campaign of former Kano State deputy governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Tijjani Muhammad Gwarzo, when he contested for Kano governorship in 2011 under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
However, Gentile, like other contenders, has some predicaments which political pundits believed might prevent him from emerging the next publicity secretary of the party.
Though in terms of paper qualification he is rated high by some political analysts, having obtained a master’s degree in political communication from the City University, London, he is seen by many as not a member of the APC and this could be a minus for him as far as the race is concerned.
Another obstacle associated with Gentile was his low participation in the activities of the party, an issue which some politicians predicted might have prevented him from succeeding Alhaji Lai Mohammed as APC national publicity.
But Alhaji Idi Bello Giginyu, a political associate of the contender, confirmed to Daily Trust that Gentile is a full member of the APC, having obtained the party’s membership card on February 2, 2014, a day after the commencement of the APC membership registration exercise.
According to him, the membership card with registration number KN/NAS/05029282 was obtained at Giginyu ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
Giginyu said: “After all, having been an active member of the defunct ACN, Gentile becomes an automatic member of the APC since his party, ACN, was part of the three parties that formed the merger to form what is today called APC.”

'There are plots to kill Buhari' - Father Mbaka alleges

By     No comments:

Catholic Priest and Founder, Adoration Ministries Enugu Nigeria, Reverend Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has alleged that there are plans to kill President Buhari due to his ongoing fight against corruption. Mbaka said this during his New Year sermon in his church yesterday.
“Nigeria, as we speak now, economically, security wise is in the intensive care unit; if the oxygen is removed, Nigeria will die, people of God prayed, from here and there and God gave us Buhari. God has told us that Buhari is prayer answered; President Buhari is an answered prayer; whether you hate him or like him, Buhari is prayer answered;
the Bishops of Nigeria, the Catholic Bishops prayed against bribery and corruption and this President came with a charter that has to do with war against corruption; all the prayers we have been doing about bribery and corruption, God answered it in Buhari who decided not to discriminate; there is nothing like religious or political discrimination in Buhari’s government. He needs all the support, unstoppable support; spiritual and otherwise; because if he is not the man in power now, had it been the last regime continued, by now, Nigeria would be for sale. I am not a sycophant; but I want to tell you that so far God is happy and he who God has blessed none can curse. Many people are planning to kill Buhari; there are many plans on how to eliminate his life so that corruption will continue; so that embezzlement will continue"he said
Mbaka called on Nigerians to wait on God
"No matter how malignant the problem is, God says He will be in charge; fellow Nigerians, let us wait upon God; I have a new message; I’m blessing and covering the message we are giving now in the prophetic name of Jesus; Father speak now as your servant listens. In 2013, there was a prophecy that there was going to be an oil doom after several years of oil boom, and when that message came out of this ground, many started calling me a prophet of doom. How can there be oil doom in oil boom? And the oil price continued to climb, but the message said people should start to gather as in the days of Joseph, that the people in government should continue to gather, let them stop squandering our wealth; but they never listened; throughout the six years we passed in the past administration, God blessed our oil with high prices, over N140 per barrel, but the message kept coming, don’t mind the oil boom, there is going to be oil doom, our politicians stop embezzling our wealth but they said the money will continue to come, our oil will continue to flow.”‎he said

I Didn't Apologise To Buhari, Jonathan, Igbo Elders- Nnamdi Kalu (daily Sun)

By     No comments:

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr Nnamdi Kanu has denied apologising to President Muhammadu Buhari, former President Goodluck Jonathan and Igbo elders over his comments on them in Radio Biafra.

This clarification came on the heels of some media reports that the Director of Radio Biafra has tendered unreserved apology to these people in his bid to regain his freedom.

Kanu, who spoke through his lawyer, Mr. Vincent Obetta, in a statement obtained by Saturday Sun said: “I denied the ruse making the rounds that my client apologized vide a letter to the President Mohammed Buhari, former President Goodluck Jonathan and some Igbo elders. “Obetta said that Kanu did not address any letter of apology whatsoever to President Buhari, Jonathan or the Igbo elders.

“However, I am aware that in the course of making his statements to the SSS, he acknowledged the fact that certain words he used on these persons/elders during his broadcast were ‘uncomplimentary’, considering the culture and values of the African society to which he belongs.

“He further stated that he may write a letter of apology to the President to express his regret over the use of such words on him. But up till this moment, such letter, to my knowledge, has not been written. And I challenge any body that has a copy of such letter to make it public,” he said.

The IPOB counsel noted that there was nothing unusual in acknowledging certain areas where a person got things wrong and expressed regrets.

“To me, I see it as a mark of good leadership and a show of high level of sportsmanship for him to have been able, at this point, to distinguish between the person of Mr. President and the bad leadership in the Nigeria federation, particularly when the problems that gave rise to the present agitation existed several decades preceding the current regime.

“I am still confused as to what and why the statement is causing furor in the media. If the innuendo is to say that by that he is or is intending to abandon his cause, then the propagators of this hype have lost the round.

“At the last time I had meeting with him, he openly told me that he is committed to his cause and was ready to sacrifice anything in the process than abandoning the cause.

“According to him, he is apologetic to the elders to whom he had used uncomplimentary words, but unapologetic to the pursuit of the agitation for the self-determination of his people,” Obetta said.

He also expressed dismay that the president is still adamant in releasing the detained Kanu.

“I was disappointed to hear this. It is one of the gloomy words I have ever heard from a democratically elected president. If the president has such powers in a democracy, there would be no necessity of running a three-tier government where the judiciary, as one arm of government, interprets the law. How did we arrive at this point?

“It is anachronistic and opprobrious to the judicial arm of government for an elected President to detain a suspect indefinitely even in the face of a subsisting order of a court of competent jurisdiction barely on the strength of an investigation report by law enforcement agency which is still subject to judicial scrutiny.

“If Mr. President maintains a hardline position in this respect, it therefore means we have to rewrite our constitution to shift the burden of proof to the accused as well as expunge the ‘presumption of innocence’ as enshrined in our laws. But until that is done, I urge those concerned to release my client ‘unconditionally’ as ordered by the Federal High Court on the 17th December, 2015.”

Obetta, however, said that despite the challenges they are facing in the case of Kanu, their confidence in the Nigerian judiciary is still intact, saying that they would continue to ventilate their grievances through the courts.

NNPC Depot CSO Hired Us To Vandalise Pipelines – Suspects

By     No comments:

Three suspected pipeline vandals arrested in Ilashe area of Ogun state last month by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit have confessed that they were hired by a Chief Security Officer at a depot in Mosimi area of Ogun state. The suspects ; Balogun Taiwo(37), Lukemon Adedigba (45) and Dayo Olanipekun (40) were alleged to have been returning from the creeks through Ilashe link , in two vehicles loaded with siphoned petroleum products belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipelines.
Suspected vandals

Suspected vandals

However, on sighting the operatives, said to have acted on tip off, the vandals scampered in different directions, abandoning the vehicles and containers loaded with petroleum product. It was gathered that while the operatives were towing the vehicles to their base , they were attacked by some armed vandals who opened fire .

A reinforcement from the Special Anti Robbery Sqaud, SARS Ogijo, reportedly saved the situation from resulting into the apparent kidnap or killing of some of the policemen. At the end of the shoot -out , three suspects were arrested, with a double barrel riffle while the rest escaped. .

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed that they were allegedly hired by a CSO at the Mosimi depot (names withheld) . Police sources hinted that in order to ascertain their claim, a letter was written to the NNPC to release the said CSO for interrogation . Thereafter , a warrant of arrest was reportedly obtained from the court to effect the arrest of the CSO.

Mild drama

However, a mild drama unfolded when the operatives arrived MOSIMI depot to effect the arrest of the CSO, following alleged stiff resistance by some staff. Sources at the IGP Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit hinted that “ We went with the warrant of arrest and a search warrant to Mosimi depot. When a search was conducted at the CSO’s office, three locally made guns were recovered. When we tried to arrest him, one of the staff raised a fire alarm and all the workers assembled and barricaded all the roads, insisting that we would not take him away.

One of the officers who tried to make the exit with the three recovered riffles was held hostage and dispossessed of the guns. The workers threatened to shut the station if he was taken away. To douse the situation, we allowed him to go. Till this moment, the Corporation is yet to release the CSO for investigation”.

CSO’s appeal text to Police

While the wait for the CSO lasted, he was said to have sent an appeal text message to one of the operatives of the Unit.

Part of the text read “ Please, I beg you in the name of God ,to kindly tamper justice with mercy. I made a mistake . That will never happen again. Kindly help to bail me out of this. I am very sorry. God will grant you favour in all your endeavours…”.

We were hired by CSO

However during an interview with Crime Guard the suspects denied indulging in pipeline vandalisation. Rather , they claimed to have been hired by the CSO to carry out surveillance of the area which is used as an exit route through Arepo creeks by vandals. One of them, Balogun Taiwo , who hails from Sango Otta, Ogun State told Crime Guard that “ On November 22, 2015, I was sleeping in my apartment in Shagamu, when my phone rang.

The caller was a friend named Semiu. He informed that the CSO Mosimi said we ( Lukemon, Dayo and I )should come over, that vandals were operating around the area. He said he needed us to arrest them . I woke up immediately and mounted my motorbike. I rode to a place where Dayo and Lukemon were waiting. We met Semiu at the entrance of the NNPC gate . The guards at the gate demanded to know what we were doing at that odd hour (1. 40am ) .

As we were about to explain to them that the CSO sent for us, he (CSO) appeared and directed them to give Semiu keys to their patrol vehicle. We entered the vehicle and zoomed off , leaving my motorbike in the premises. On reaching Ilara road, we saw two vehicles and two okadas (motorcycles ) approaching from the opposite direction . Suspecting they were vandals, Semiu intercepted the vehicles, shooting sporadically. This made the occupants to flee, abandoning the vehicles. We took the vehicles and okada. Semiu then called the CSO on the phone to inform him of the development.

He asked us to remain there till dawn. While we were there , we saw another vehicle moving out of the bush . We gave them a hot pursuit which caused its occupants to flee. We discovered they had loaded their abandoned vehicles with jerricans filled with petroleum products.

Altercation

At about 4am, we saw another vanagon bus leaving the bush , we chased it and the occupants fled as well. As we were about calling the CSO, Anti pipeline policemen arrived the scene. They identified us as those who opened fire on them earlier. They followed us with the recovered vehicles and exhibits to the depot. When the CSO came to meet us at the gate, he directed that the recovered vehicles and petroleum products be kept in the premises. But the Police said it should be taken to the station . This led to an altercation , in the process of which the police towed two of the vehicles away and arrested us.

“We are not vandals. I have never been to the creeks before. This is the second time I am joining them for such surveillance. It was Semiu that invited me the first time. Semiu works for the CSO. He only contracted us to work for him . He has not even paid us . It was only Semiu that was armed. The rest of us were just with torch-lights”.

Lukemon and Dayo corroborated Taiwo’s claim, adding however that they were only given N1000 each before they embarked on the ill fated trip. Effort to reach Head, Public Affairs, Petroleum Product Marketing Company, PPMC Nasir Imodagbe , on the alleged indictment of the CSO failed as he requested this reporter to send him a text. But he never replied the text as at time of writing this report . Meanwhile, when contacted, the head, IGP Anti -Pipeline Vandalism Unit, Mr Valentine Olumese, a Chief Superintendent of Police , told Vanguard that the CSO was still being expected to clear himself of the allegation

‘boko Haram Set Our Daughter On Fire’ - Mother Laments (graphic Pic)

By     No comments:

At only 14 months old, baby Aisha Lawal, her own mother’s namesake, has been in hospital for a year and two months with severe burns over nearly half her body. Her hospitalization started in Maiduguri where her family fled on foot and bicycle after Boko Haram attacked their village in Bama, bombing and razing houses to the ground. Recently her family has managed to get to National Hospital, Abuja, where she underwent a four-hour surgery. Surgeons used flesh from her thigh to reconstruct her eyelids, adding flesh to the top and bottom lids.
One of Aisha’s upper eyelids had been turned inside out, and doctors said leaving it unfixed meant Aisha could lose the eye itself due to unprotected exposure. The blast she survived had welded her left arm to her armpit. Surgeons did a skin graft to free the arm from the attachment. Scar tissue and burnt skin still cover visible parts of her body and half her head. The rest of her not visible is wrapped in bandage.
After days in trauma and intensive care unit at the hospital, where Vice President Yemi Osinbajo visited her family, she and her parents-Aisha and Ibrahim Goni Lawal-are now in the hospital’s private wing, with treatment privately paid for by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Daily Trust met the family.

Daily Trust: Where were you when the attack took place?
Ibrahim Goni: We were in Bama. It was early, around five in the morning. I was in the mosque but my wife and baby were at home. That was when they attacked the town. Suddenly we heard gunshots. There were soldiers in the town at that time, that’s why we had courage to stay on before it happened.
That morning of the attack, Boko Haram insurgents set our house on fire, with my daughter inside. It was her mother who went into the room to get her. She saved her from the fire.
[Aisha’s] grandmother and my wife took her and left the town. They hired a bicycle. They were carried on the bicycle into the bush along the road to Maiduguri. They spent up to three days in the bush before they reached Maiduguri. They went to a hospital there.

DT: Where were you at that time?
Aisha Lawal: I was in the bathroom. I had just bathed baby Aisha, and she was in the bedroom. I had the baby dressed before I was bathing too. I heard gunshots so I tried to put on my clothes. My baby was crying. I came out running. The house was on fire, and my baby, too. I ran in and pulled her by the leg and brought her out.
She was already burning and screaming when I brought her out. I removed her clothes, which were on fire. I put her in my hijab and ran out with her. We went straight into the bush. The father had fled from the mosque. He didn’t enter the house. From the bush we emerged in a village whose name I don’t know.

DT: How was baby Aisha then?
Ibrahim: She was crying all through. It was at that village that we hired a bicycle for N1,500. Some people helped us, the moment they saw our situation. The person we hired the bicycle from rode it. We were brought to Konduga on the bicycle and from there buses took us to Maiduguri. They were taking people from Konduga to Maiduguri. There were so many people waiting, the buses had to come back and forth.

DT: How long was the journey from when you entered the bush in Bama to Maiduguri?
Aisha: Forty-five kilometers. We walked more than 45km on foot. We met my husband at the motor park in Maiduguri, where he was already waiting for us.
Ibrahim: When you come to Maiduguri, you don’t enter. You stay on the outskirts. If your people are aboard the inbound vehicle, you meet them. If they are not, you wait for them before you can continue the journey.
We went to Costain Hospital in Maiduguri. We paid for the treatment. Doctor asked when we came, ‘who’s baby is this’? We came forward, and has asked if we had money to treat her. I said yes, we have N20,000. They wrote prescriptions, and I bought the drugs, and they worked on her. For four months, they were writing out prescriptions.

DT: How did you come to Abuja?
Ibrahim: The Vice President [Yemi Osinbajo] came to Costain to see people affected [in the attack]. Many were pointed out to him. [That was July 1, 2015]. That’s when he said, this particular one, I will handle her treatment personally, and it is not from government money, it will be from my pocket.
One of her eyes doesn’t close, so they said they will work on it so it closes. They have separated her arm from her armpit, which was fused before. Just the hand is left. They have told us that when she grows a little, they can continue work on the hand. They said they will give us time until they finish the work.

DT: How did you manage with her before now?
Ibrahim: Nothing. We couldn’t do anything. We didn’t have any drugs to give her, couldn’t put anything on her skin. We just held her that way.

DT: How do you handle your daughter’s care?
Ibrahim: We don’t bathe her. There’s need for it, but we can’t do that. We just clean her up. There are so many bandages on her.

DT: What would you want done to the perpetrators, if they are caught?
Ibrahim: Whatever punishment the government deems fit.
