National Conference endorses creation of Aba, Ijebu & 17 other States -- Also Presidency should be rotated...(DETAILS)

By     No comments:

Delegates at the National Conference have
endorsed the recommendation for additional states
for the South- East. The delegates also approved the
creation of 18 new states nation-wide. The National
Judicial Institute (NJI) venue of the conference
erupted in celebration.
Soon yesterday, after they voted in favour of the
recommendation of the Committee on Political
Restructuring and Forms of Government, delegates
left their seats and exchanged pleasantries. For
once, delegates from the other five geo-political
zones joined their South-East counterparts in
celebrating what many described as a landmark
victory for the Igbos.
Apart from the 18 new states proposed, the
conference said a separate state-yet-to-be named
should be carved out of the South-East to bring the
number of the states in the zone to six. In creating a
new state from the South-East geopolitical zone, the
conference said the creation would correct the
imbalance of the zone having the least number of
states.
In the existing 36 states arrangement, each zone has
six states with only the North-West having seven
states. The new states proposed by the conference
are: Aba, to be carved out of the present Abia State;
Katagum, from Bauchi State; Ijebu, from Ogun State;
Amana, from former Sardauna Province; Apa, from
Benue State; Anioma, from Delta State, Savannah,
from Borno State; and Etiti, from South-East.
Others are Njaba/Anim, from Anambra and Imo
states; Gurara, from Kaduna State; Ghari, from
Kano State; Adada, New Oyo from Oyo State; Orachi,
from Rivers State; Ogoja, from Cross River State;
and Kainji, from Kebbi and Niger states. Two other
states, one each from the South-East and South-West
zones, are also yet to be named.
It was agreed by the delegates that the 18 new states
would be shared among the six zones in a manner
that no zone would have more states than the other.
Though it was also agreed that states were free to
have their constitutions, the request to change the
name of Adamawa State to Gongola State was
overwhelmingly rejected by the delegates.
The delegates also voted that the Presidency should
rotate among the six geopolitical zones of the
country.
However, a delegate, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN,
condemned the decision to create more states. He
said the action was at variance with the decisions
and resolutions earlier taken by the conference on
the need by government to cut cost.
"Having regard to the several resolutions of the
National Conference on the need to reduce the cost
of governance, I found the recommendation for the
creation of additional 18 states rather
contradictory," Falana said.

UN blacklists Boko Haram

By     No comments:

The United Nation Security Council committee
yesterday May 22nd blacklisted Islamic sect Boko
haram after the Nigerian government on Wednesday
May 21st made a request asking for the sect to be
blacklisted.
A statement released by the U.S. Ambassador to the
United Nations, Samantha Power says the move was to
help close all avenue of funding received by Boko
Haram members
"Today, the Security Council took an important step
in support of the government of Nigeria’s efforts to
defeat Boko Haram and hold its murderous leadership
accountable for atrocities. By adding Boko Haram to
the U.N.’s 1267 (al Qaeda) sanctions list, the
Security Council has helped to close off important
avenues of funding, travel and weapons to Boko
Haram, and shown global unity against their savage
actions,”
With this blacklisting, it makes it an offence for any
country or individual to provide any form of support to
Boko Haram. The group is now subject to an
international asset freeze, travel ban and arms
embargo.

Another mutiny in Nigerian Army Barracks, as soldiers manhandle their new Commander...(DETAILS)

By     No comments:

Soldiers in the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army at
Maimalari Barracks, Maiduguri on Thursday, May 22,
2014 mutinied against their new general officer
commanding (GoC), Brigadier General M.Y. Ibrahim.
Sahara Reporters reports:
Several sources in the barracks told
SaharaReporters that the soldiers' second act of
mutiny in two weeks began around 3:00 p.m.
(Nigerian time). The angry soldiers blew a whistle,
and most of the rank and file gathered at a spot
before they marched en masse to the 7th Division
headquarters building where the GOC's office is
located.
The sources said the sources shot in the air as
they marched and chanted "We no gree oh, we no
gree!" Our sources said the protesting soldiers were
upset about the army's failure to pay their
outstanding allowances. They were also annoyed
by the decision of the newly posted GOC to ban
motorcycles as a form of transport within the
barracks. The new GOC reportedly banned
motorbikes known as Okada and tricycles known
as "Keke NAPEP" from operating within the vast
barracks. The soldiers wondered why the new
commander would prohibit the use of the only
affordable means of transport they have when he
knows full well that the base covers a huge area
and that few soldiers own cars or bike.
"If no okada [motorcycles] are allowed, then our small
children have to walk to school and our wives will walk
to market," one of the soldiers told SaharaReporters.
"Are we not suffering too much already?" he added.
Once they arrived at the GOC's office, the protesting
soldiers decided to give him a dose of the experience of
navigating within the barracks without motorcycles.
They ordered Major General XYZ to come outside the
building, pushing and shoving him. Then they forced
him to trek all through the barracks.
The angry soldiers also demanded the payment of their
N100, 000 furniture allowance which, according to
them, was long overdue.
Last week, frustrated soldiers at the same barracks
demonstrated and shot at the car of their erstwhile
GOC, Major General Ahmadu Mohammed. The soldiers
felt that General Mohammed's operational orders were
responsible for the death of close to 100 soldiers who
were returning from an operation in Chibok, the town
where members of the Islamist group, Boko Haram,
kidnapped 276 high schoolgirls near midnight on April
14. The abduction of the girls, who remain missing,
has sparked outrage in Nigeria and around the world.
Military authorities in Abuja decided to remove Major
General Mohammed a day after the first mutiny.
One of the soldiers who spoke to SaharaReporters
stated that he and his colleagues want military
authorities to be more focused in their approach to the
war against Boko Haram. "We can finish them [Boko
Haram] without difficulty, but the commanders don't
give us enough weapons for operations. And they send
only a few of us to fight hundreds of Boko Haram
fighters," he said.
Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has been the
flashpoint of numerous bloody attacks by Boko Haram

Boko Haram attacks a community near Chibok, 17 dead...(DETAILS)

By     No comments:

In a fresh attack, Islamist group Boko Haram have
been accused of killing 17 people in an attack on a
village in Borno State, North-East Nigeria, close to
where hundreds of schoolgirls were seized.
This comes a day after 118 people died in the Jos
twin bomb blasts.
In the latest attack, BBC reports that Boko Haram
fighters reportedly spent hours killing and looting in
the village of Alagarno. Alagarno is near Chibok,
from where the schoolgirls were abducted last
month. People in north-east Nigeria are extremely
vulnerable to attacks because many areas are no go
zones for the military and the insurgents operate
freely, the BBC's Will Ross reports from the country.
Witnesses in Alagarno said the suspected Boko
Haram fighters arrived close to midnight, and killed
and looted for hours before leaving in stolen
vehicles. One survivor told the BBC that every single
building in the village had been torched.

Graphic Photos from yesterday's Twin Bomb blast in Jos

By     No comments:

Contrary to earlier report, the bomb blast that hit
Jos, Plateau was a twin bomb that took off almost
the same time. The two separate bomb blasts were a
few meters and minutes apart and rocked the Jos
main town at Railway Terminal area and Terminus
Roundabout respectively.
Over 200 people, according to new updates, were
killed in the tragic Jos bomb blasts that occurred
today, up from the official 72 dead released earlier
by government sources.
The bomb blasts had occurred after two vans
exploded at the market. First vehicle to explode was
a Peugeot J5 van, with the registration number XG
148 BLD, then the second blast was carried out with
a Toyota van, with a Gombe state license plate
number. Eyewitnesses are saying the second car, a
Toyota Sienna van, had been abandoned since 6 AM
Tuesday morning. The car exploded after a beeping
sound was heard by curious local residents.
The second blast killed more people than the first
one as many residents and traders, who had fled the
scene over the first explosion, tried to join rescue
agencies to save the injured and retrieve the bodies
of the dead. Men of the fire service, who responded
to distress calls to fight the resultant inferno, were
said to have stayed far away from the market over
fears that more bombs could have been planted in
the market.

Also,
University of Jos twitter handle just announced that
they lost 15 students at yesterday's twin bomb blasts
that left over 200 people dead. 8 of those students
were final year med students. Too sad!

Chibok Abduction: Another escaped abducted girl narrates her ordeal...Read HERE

By     No comments:

Another escaped victim, identified as Godiya Simon,
who was among the over 234 school girls that were
abducted from Government Girls Secondary School,
Chibok, Borno State, by Boko Haram members on
April 14, yesterday narrated her ordeal in Sambisa
Forest.
Speaking to journalist in Maiduguri, on how she
escaped from the dreaded sambisa forest, she
explained that after their kidnapping, they were
made to walk through the forest where they were
later kept in an open place inside the forest.
"The place we were kept was not just right and I felt
that these people might kill us. We heard many bad
things about them. I then began to plan how to
escape. I told them that I wanted to urinate which
they said no to, but after I kept repeating it, they
allowed me to go along with three others. That was
the time we escaped from the camp" she said.
The escapee, who said she couldn't trace her way
back to the forest acknowledged that they were held
in the forest, as they could hear the sect members
talking.
"No, I do not think I will know, you know we
travelled at night. When we went to urinate, we
started running. We were too scared, we just kept
running, believing that with God on our side, we
would get help" she said.
Simon said after they had ran very far from the
forest, they fortunately came across a Fulani
herdsman, who helped them out of the bush to the
express-road where they boarded a vehicle back to
Chibok.
She disclosed that she was in Maiduguri because they
were asked to come and watch a video that was
recently released by the Boko Haram, leader
Abubakar Shakau, in order for them to ascertain if
the other girls who are still in captivity are all from
GGSS.
Simon, who confirmed that there were many of her
schoolmates in the video, added that she felt a little
bit relieved seeing that they are still alive, and
expressed optimism that they will come back like she
did.
The elated escapee asserted that she felt bad when
she saw some her schoolmates that are Christians
reciting the Holy Koran.
"It makes me feel sad knowing that they must have
been forced to recite the Koran. I know four of the
girls to be good Christians that will never accept to
change their faith. It is sad that they have been
forced to become Muslims" Simon said.
