The two were married on Oct. 3, 1992, at Trinity United Church in Chicago.
"What I've come to find is, you don't sweat the small stuff," she told Ellen DeGeneres in March. "The journey that we've taken together, the fun we've had, the challenges we've faced, the two beautiful children that we're raising -- I kind of give him a pass now when he leaves his socks on the floor or tells that story for the one hundredth time and wants us to laugh at it as if we first heard it."
Happy anniversary!

U.S. counter-terrorism squad trains 200 Nigerian Police

By     No comments:
The U.S. Government’s Anti-terrorism Assistance Programme (ATA) has conducted a mass casualty exercise to culminate a yearlong training programme with 200 Nigerian Police

The U.S. Government’s Anti-terrorism Assistance Programme (ATA) has conducted a mass casualty exercise to culminate a yearlong training programme with 200 Nigerian Police and other emergency management professionals.
This is contained in a statement by the Public Affairs Section, U.S. Embassy on Saturday in Abuja.
It said that the exercise, conducted in Abuja on Saturday, was ATA’s largest in Nigeria, included participants from Nigerian Red Cross, National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA), and medical personnel.
The statement said that the exercise enhanced everyone’s ability to plan effectively for and manage a mass casualty critical incident.
It explained that the U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, Mrs Maria Brewer, at the event said that the exercise was to achieve new innovation among the participants.
By bringing together all of your various agencies, with outside experts in the field, we can achieve new innovations, greater cooperation, and build upon many of the skills you already possess,” she said.
Brewer, in the statement, expressed the U.S. Government’s condolences for Oct. 2 twin bomb blasts in Abuja which further emphasised the significance of the training and emergency preparedness.
The statement also quoted the NEMA Director General, Alhaji Sani Sidi, as commending the U.S. for organising the programme for the emergency professionals and security agents.
The capacity building programme provided by the Anti-terrorism Assistance Programme of the United States is coming at a very good time when all hands must be on deck to defeat terrorism.
“There is a need for the security agencies and the Nigerian actors to step up their game in order to counter these threats,
” he said.
According to the statement, in its 1.5 million dollars programme worldwide, ATA has trained NEMA in critical incident management courses and enhanced Nigeria’s explosive ordnance disposal capabilities through courses, seminars, and equipment grants.
It said ATA had trained senior hospital personnel and emergency response personnel including police, fire fighters, emergency management technicians, and specialised law enforcement units on management of mass casualty incidents.

Hajj stampede: Nigerians Won’t Stone Devil Again – Sanusi.

By     No comments:

Nigeria’s Amirul Hajj and Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, on Friday night said Nigerians will no longer participate in the stoning of devil ritual, except they get accommodation close to Jamrat, where the exercise will take place.

The Emir’s reaction followed the recent stampede in Saudi Arabia that killed several pilgrims, including about 70 Nigerians.

He also reiterated his earlier position that blacks, particularly Nigerians were not responsible for the stampede.

The Emir, who quoted several verses of the Qur’an, said refusal to perform the stoning of devil ritual does not in any way invalidate one’s pilgrimage.

He said, “During the era of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), he permitted pilgrims who came on camels to stay in Makkah after Arafat, instead of staying in Mina and sleeping at Muzdalifa.

“So, if the Prophet can give such grace to some people, just to protect their animals, why didn’t our scholars educate our people properly to avoid this untoward hardship and death?

“Therefore, it will be part of my recommendation to the Federal Government that, if we cannot get accommodation close to Jamrat where the Arabs reside in Mina, then this year may be the last time we will sleep in Mina and Muzdalifa because we want to stone the devil.

“If one deliberately refuses to perform the stoning of the devil ritual, all he needs to do is just to slaughter a ram. So, if this is the situation, why do we go and suffer and die instead of sacrificing a ram.”

Russian Jets destroyes IS command post

By     No comments:

Moscow said Saturday that its jets had destroyed an IS command post near the group's main Raqa stronghold as well as an underground bunker.
"Over the past 24 hours, SU-34 and SU-24M jets of the Russian airborne formation in Syria made more than 20 sorties over nine Islamic State infrastructure facilities," the defence ministry said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Russian strikes "hit IS positions west of Raqa overnight and explosions were heard in the city".
Raqa has acted as the extremist group's de facto Syrian "capital" since 2013.
The Observatory, which relies on a network of sources on the ground for its information, said Russian jets had killed 12 jihadists in Raqa this week.
But raids ordered by Moscow have also hit areas controlled by moderate groups that are fighting Assad and even prompted a claim by US Senator John McCain that Russian jets had killed rebel soldiers trained and funded by the CIA.
Obama told reporters that Russia "doesn't distinguish between ISIL and a moderate Sunni opposition that wants to see Mr Assad go.
"From their perspective, they're all terrorists. And that's a recipe for disaster."
Russia said its strikes this week had completely destroyed IS positions in northern Aleppo province, neighbouring Idlib province and in Hama in central Syria.
But several military sources and the Observatory said Russia had hit areas controlled by groups other than IS.
The Observatory also says Russian strikes have killed several civilians and wounded doctors in a raid on a hospital in Hama.
British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said that just five percent of Russian strikes had targeted IS.

Vatican fires gay priest Krzysztof Charamsa

By     No comments:

The Vatican fired a monsignor who came public as gay on the eve of a big meeting of the world's bishops to discuss church outreach to gays, divorcees and more traditional Catholic families.
The Vatican took action after Krzysztof Charamsa, a mid-level official in its doctrine office, came out in newspaper interviews in Italy and Poland saying he was happy and proud to be a gay priest, and that he was in love with a man whom he identified as his boyfriend.
"The decision to make such a pointed statement on the eve of the opening of the synod appears very serious and irresponsible, since it aims to subject the synod assembly to undue media pressure," the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said in a statement.
As a result, Charamsa could no longer work at the Vatican or its pontifical universities, Lombardi said. Despite his dismissal, Charamsa remains a priest, although Lombardi hinted that his superiors could take further action.
Charamsa, 43, initially planned a press conference in front of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith's office, but moved it to central Rome after the Vatican action. He was joined by his companion, identified only as Eduard.
Charamsa told reporters that the timing of his disclosure was not related to the bishops meeting on the family, but said he hoped it might add "a Christian voice" to the synod that is expected to address how the Church can better minister to the homosexual faithful.
"I came out. This is a very personal, difficult and tough decision in the Catholic church's homophobic world," Charamsa said, and asked people to bear this in mind.
He said he has written a book in Italian and Polish to "lay bare" his experience "in front of all those who want to confront me."
Charamsa told the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza that he was motivated to make his sexual orientation public by hate mail that he received after publicly criticizing a right-wing Polish priest who is strongly anti-gay in the Catholic weekly Tygodnik Powszechny.
"I have to say who I am. I am a gay priest. I am a happy and proud gay priest," he told Gazeta Wyborcza.

Oregon Shooter was Army dropout, and studied mass shooters

By     No comments:

The 26-year-old gunman who opened fire on fellow students in his community college English class, killing nine people, was an Army boot camp dropout who studied mass shooters before becoming one himself.
A day after the rampage in this Oregon timber town, authorities said Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer wore a flak jacket and brought at least six guns and five ammunition magazines to the school. Investigators found another seven guns at the apartment he shared with his mother.
Officials on Friday also released the names of the dead, who ranged in age from 18 to 67 and included several freshmen and a teacher. They were sons and daughters, spouses and parents.
One of the students was active in the Future Farmers of America and loved to play soccer. Another was on only his fourth day of college. One was a 59-year-old student whose daughter was enrolled in the same school but not injured the shooting. Grieving families began sharing details of their loved ones.
"We have been trying to figure out how to tell everyone how amazing Lucas was, but that would take 18 years," the family of Lucas Eibel, 18, said in a statement released through the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Eibel, who was studying chemistry, volunteered at a wildlife center and animal shelter.
Quinn Glen Cooper's family said their son had just started college and loved dancing and voice acting.
Harper-Mercer, who died during a shootout with police, was armed with handguns and a rifle, some of which were military grade. The weapons had been purchased legally over the past three years, some by him, others by relatives, said Celinez Nunez, assistant field agent for the Seattle division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Oregon's top federal prosecutor says the shooter used a handgun when he opened fire on classmates and stashed a rifle in another room and did not fire it. He says it's impossible to know what the shooter had planned for the rifle

Pope Francis: Head of the Catholic Church

A high-ranking Polish priest from the Vatican revealed he was gay on Saturday, saying he wanted to challenge the Church’s “paranoia” on the eve of a key synod on the family.
In two separate interviews to Italy’s Corriere Sera and to the Polish version of Newsweek, Father Krysztof Olaf Charamsa, who works for a Vatican office for protecting Catholic dogma said he was a practising homosexual with a partner.

The explosive revelations by the 43-year-old priest who works for the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith were published a day before a bishop’s synod at which the Church’s approach to homosexuality, among other topics, will come under review.
“I know that I will have to give up my ministry which is my whole life,” he told the Italian daily.
“I know that the Church will see me as someone who did not know how to fulfil his duty (to remain chaste), who is lost and who is not even with a woman but with a man!”
Charamsa said his decision to come out was motivated by concern for the Church’s attitude to homosexuals, which he described as “backwards”.
“It is time that the Church opened its eyes to gay believers and understood that the solution it is proposing — total abstinence and a life without love — is not humane,” he said.
The Church’s attitude to homosexuality are “backwards when compared to the level of awareness that humankind has reached,” he told the paper.
“The clergy is largely homosexual and unfortunately, it is also homophobic to the point of paranoia but paralysed by the lack of acceptance for its own sexual orientation,” he told the Polish version of Newsweek.
“Wake up, Church, stop persecuting the innocents,” he said, insisting his aim was to help the Catholic church.

Borno Govt to relocate IDPs back to their hometowns

By     No comments:
Army provides free medical service to 300 Bakassi IDPs

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (BOSEMA) said it had concluded arrangements with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to relocate some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Maiduguri to their hometowns.
The Chairman of BOSEMA, Alhaji Ahmed Satomi disclosed this on Friday when he visited Alhaji Mohammed Kanar, the Zonal Coordinator, NEMA, in Maiduguri.
He said that arrangements had been concluded for the building of IDPs camps in Bama, Monguno, Dikwa, Konduga and Damboa.
According to him, these IDPs locations will ease the relocation of the displaced persons from already overpopulated Maiduguri.
He said that the state government was ready to work with the Federal Government, particularly NEMA, to ensure that facilities like schools in Maiduguri, currently accommodating IDPs, were freed so as they could return to their former use.
Satomi said he was in NEMA office to seek areas of further assistance to the displaced persons, adding  that the Federal Government, especially NEMA, has been of tremendous help to the state in the care of the victims of Boko Haram insurgency.
He restated the state government's commitment to get students back to school ``as soon as possible,'' hence the need to relocate the IDPs from some of the schools that were serving as camps for the displaced persons.
He, however, said that the return of all the IDPs in Maiduguri back to their hometowns would depend on the advice of the military, but insisted that some towns had already been cleared for displaced persons to move back.
The Northeast Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mohammed Kannar told the BOSEMA chairman that his agency remained committed "to returning the more than one million IDPs to their homes.
