The police in Lagos have arrested a 39-year-old trader, Chinwe Abasi, for allegedly brutalising a 12-year-old boy, Chinedu Okorie, with hot water in the Apapa area of the state.
Our correspondent learnt that Abasi, a mother of two, who hails from Nnewi, Anambra State, allegedly poured hot water on the boy because he collected N100 from a neighbour to buy a pair of socks to wear to school without the woman’s knowledge.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Okorie, who is in Junior Secondary School 1, also worked as a sales assistant for Abasi, who sold cloth materials in the Oyingbo Market.
It was gathered that last Monday when schools resumed, Okorie told Abasi that he would need to buy a pair of socks for school.
Our correspondent learnt that the trader allegedly ignored the boy until Thursday when a neighbour, identified only as Usman, gave Okorie N100 to buy the pair of socks.
It was gathered that when Abasi learnt that the boy had collected money from Usman to buy the pair of socks, she became angry and beat up the boy.
The 12-year-old was said to have ran to the kitchen during the flogging. Abasi allegedly grabbed an electric kettle of boiling water and emptied it on the boy.
The matter was reported at the FESTAC Police Division and the trader was arrested.
It was gathered that the matter was also reported to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, and a temporary shelter was provided for the boy, where he also received medical attention.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Okorie, who hails from Enugu State, said he was forced to collect the N100 from Usman because he had no other option.
He said, “I told madam (Abasi) last Monday that I needed to buy a pair of socks for school. My teachers would seize my sandals without it. But she did not buy them, and I went to collect money from our neighbour.
“When she saw the pair of socks, she became angry and started to beat me. I ran into the kitchen. That was where she grabbed the electric kettle and poured the content ─ hot water ─ on me. It was around 7pm on Thursday.”
The trader, however, told PUNCH Metro that she did not deliberately brutalise the boy, adding that everyone knew she treated Okorie like her son.
She said, “On Monday, pupils resumed school, and Chinedu (Okorie) told me he needed a pair of socks and I said I would buy them for him.
Unfortunately, when I came back, I forgot. Later, our neighbour said Chinedu collected N100 from him to buy the pair of socks. I was angry.
“I queried him and warned him against the behaviour. On Thursday, I gave him N100 to buy another pair of socks. When he came back, he told me he used the money for something else. So, I beat him up.
“There were times when I gave him N1,000 to go and buy fuel. He would spend three hours and later say he misplaced the money. So, I disciplined him on Thursday.
“He ran into the kitchen, and that was when I mistakenly poured the water on him.
“I sell clothes at the Oyingbo Market. He is my domestic help. I brought him from his village in Enugu State about four years ago. The boy is stubborn. I am not a bad woman.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the arrest, adding that the suspect would be charged to court.
She said, “The suspect has been arrested, and she will be charged to court.”

Army Chief, Buratai, orders all officers to declare their assets

By     No comments:

Press statement from the Nigerian Army...
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai has directed all officers of the Nigerian Army who have not declared their assets to do so immediately. He gave the directive today during a conference with Principal Staff Officers and Directors serving at the Army Headquarters.
It is to be noted that the Chief of Army Staff has done so soon on his appointment as Commander, Multinational Joint Task Force in May 2015 and also on his appointment as Chief of Army Staff in July 2015. Copies of both are with the Code of Conduct Bureau.

This directive is in order, considering the fact that all military officers are having Presidential Commission and are public servants, as well as subject to both civil and military laws.

In addition, given the current drive of the country for probity and accountability, the Nigerian Army should not only key in but should be one of the key drivers for such laudable project. Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman Acting Director Army Public Relations

Photo: Killers of ex-FUTA VC sentenced to death

By     No comments:

An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure has sentenced 2 persons, Ita Enang & Olayemi Bamitale, to death by hanging, for killing a former Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Albert Ilemobade in June 2015

Enang and Bamitale who were both domestic staff of the deceased, connived and had him killed over financial disagreement.

After killing him, they hid his body in his garage and escaped with his SUV and other valuables.

After one week of declaring him missing, family members found the late scholar's decomposing body inside a sack. Both men were arrested while trying to sell off his SUV and other valuables they stole.

While delivering judgement, the presiding judge, Justice Olamide Williams, said the prosecuting counsel had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused persons killed the varsity don for their selfish gain. She thereafter sentenced them to death by hanging.

Buhari Will Face Fire If Governor Fayose Is Sacked from Office – Says Ekiti Assembly

By     No comments:
EKITI 1

The Ekiti State House of Assembly on Tuesday said the federal government’s attempt to use the report of the indictment of some military officers who participated in the conduct of the last governorship election in the state to impeach Governor Ayodele Fayose would be resisted.
The assembly, which hurriedly cut short its recess that would have ended on January 25 for the special plenary presided over by the Speaker, Hon Kola Oluwawole, accused the federal government of plotting to resort to extra-judicial means if the military panel fails to achieve its set target.
“We are aware of the plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to intimidate, muzzle and kill the voice of the opposition most especially Governor Fayose because of his position on national issues.”
The assembly, which passed a vote of confidence on Fayose over his contributions to national politics and the criticism of President Buhari’s government, accused the military of bias, for restricting its findings to Ekiti State and exonerating officers who participated in Osun and Edo States polls.
Eight resolutions were later passed at the end of the sitting which expressly pointed at the fact that the assembly was aware of the alleged effort to ignite constitutional crisis in the state and forcefully take over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led state government.
“It is a well known fact and on records that the June 21 election was adjudged to be free, fair and credible by both local and international observers. It is also a statement of fact that all security agencies including the military that monitored the election were commended by observers.
“It is now curious to find out that the institution which was applauded and commended for its good conduct and professionalism is now being indicted by its own men,” he said.
The military has already recommended some officers for disciplinary action for their roles in Ekiti poll.

Drama As Minister’s Wife Refuses To Remove Hijab For MTN Registration (Photos)

By     No comments:

A mild drama played out at an MTN registration outlet in Abuja when a certain Muslim woman refused to remove her ‘hijab’ to complete her SIM registration process.
Following the fine imposed on MTN by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, for having about 5 million unregistered SIMs in its network, it started another round of SIM cards registration in the country to meet up with the January deadline.
At the Garki II, Lagos street MTN outlet, a Yoruba-speaking Muslim woman covered with hijab, refused security search at the entrance to the registration centre.
Naijaloaded gathered that the Muslim woman said she will not unveil herself before she will gain access into an office ‘in her own country.’

A police officer, who was acting on instructions to check every customer before they gained access into the office, told a reporter that, “This woman is a suspect.
“How can you come to a public place dressed like this and you expect to gain access into an office that is not yours?
“No one knows what she has under her veil. She may be carrying a bomb, who knows?
“This is the reason why we insisted on searching her and she claimed she is a Minister’s wife,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, the purported Minister’s wife gained access into the office through the intervention of one of the MTN staff who identified herself simply as Zainab.
Zainab, the front desk Manager, said the unidentified woman asked to be privately attended to as she cannot unveil herself in public.
According to her:-
“The woman asked me to register her in a private room because she cannot remove her veil. I told her it is not in any way possible and after pleading, I asked her, “what if I want to take your photo during the registration?”
Zainab said the supposed Minister’s wife also declined and asked for the registration to be done without her snap shot.
She said the woman later asked that she sought permission from her husband before she can unveil her face for the registration process to be completed.
The woman, having caused a stir in the outlet with eyebrows raised, disorganized queues with her insistence and left mouths wagging.
She told Naijaloaded that she will make sure she deals with ‘this so-called police officer.’
The Hajiya, (as she was referred to), who didn’t want her name mentioned, said, “Can you imagine the embarrassment, an ordinary police woman stopping me from entering an office in my own country?
“I will show you,” she added. Speaking further, she said, “I want to do this registration thing and they say I must open my veil, which I cannot do because it is against my belief.
“I managed to gain access into the office after several embarrassments from these police guard. When I got in, the MTN officials said I needed to open up my face for a snap shot to complete my registration process which I had not even started.
“I just came out to take permission from my husband, whether or not I should unveil myself, before this police woman said if I go out, I won’t be allowed to go back into the office unless I am thoroughly searched,” she said.
When asked if she was actually a wife of one of the Nigerian Ministers, she said, “I’m sure you must have heard people say that here. People, who know me, have said it, so I cannot talk about that right now,” the professed minister’s wife quipped.

Policemen Run As Robbers Abduct Husband & Wife In Front of Police Station

By     No comments:
LAGOS 1

Tragedy struck as armed robbers shot dead a security guard, identified only as Kayode, in front of the Ibafo Police Division close to Lagos.
Kayode, a member of the Oodua People’s Congress, was among residents who responded to the distress call of a couple abducted by the robbers while in their Land Cruiser SUV.
The couple, Oluwakunmi Ayodeji, an engineer, and his pregnant wife, Oyin, were returning from a maternity centre behind the police station when they were attacked by the gang.
Policemen at the Ibafo division hurriedly shut the gate to the station and shunned calls for help.
According to Punch, the robbers, after getting to the Lotto end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, shot the man, Oluwakunmi in the eye region and abandoned him and his wife on the road.
A family friend of the couple, Bisola Olojede, said she escaped by a whisker.
Olojede explained that she had taken the couple to the maternity centre where Oyin had a scan and they were leaving the centre for a hospital in Ikeja when the robbers struck.
She said, “The incident happened around 10pm. The woman, who is my friend, was pregnant and her doctor recommended that she should do a scan. I was called to take them to a private maternity centre in Ibafo.
“From the maternity centre, we decided to go to a hospital in Ikeja. As her husband opened the vehicle doors with a remote, she entered and sat at the front, while I took my seat at the back. Her husband had just entered the SUV when a man suddenly appeared and started dragging the steering with him.
“I alighted from the car and called for help. I saw a man and I begged him to assist us, but he ignored me. I never knew he was among the robbers.”
Olojede said she moved away when she saw that the robbers were armed. She said a few minutes later, they drove away with Oluwakunmi and his wife.
She ran after the vehicle and started calling for help, adding that some residents, including Kayode, joined her in chasing the vehicle.
When the robbers got to the front of the Ibafo Police Station, they were said to have stopped and fired into the crowd of pursuers.
Olojede said, “The bullet hit one of us and the man died immediately. The police heard the gunshot and rushed out.
I started begging them to help us, saying there was a pregnant woman in critical condition in the vehicle. There were two of them, a man and a woman. But they shunned me.
“I called my husband on the telephone and told him what happened. He said I should call the police and I told him I was with them but they were not doing anything. When the police heard that, they quickly shut their gate.”
PUNCH was told that when the DPO was contacted, he ordered the officers to attend to the case.
The policemen were said to have opened their gate and invited Olojede to make statements.
“Later, they asked if there was anybody that could identify the man that was shot dead and two men came forward and said he was a member of the OPC and his name was Kayode.
“They then put him in the same van they were supposed to use to chase the robbers, preparing him for the mortuary.
They started asking me all kinds of irrelevant questions. They told their DPO on the telephone that they had attended to me,” she added.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said despite witnessing the killing, the Ibafo Police did not send signals to surrounding stations.

BREAKING NEWS:- Court Sends Nnamdi Kanu To Kuje Prison For Treason

By     No comments:
nnamdi_kanu_kuje

John Tsoho, justice of the federal high court, Abuja, has ordered that Nnamdi Kanu be remanded in Kuje prison pending his trial for treason.
Tsoho, the judge, gave the order after listening to Mohammed Diri, counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), and Chuks Muoma (SAN), counsel to Kanu.
Muoma had argued that the accused person be remanded in prison custody away from the cell of the DSS.
He said that his client had been kept incommunicado in the custody of the DSS for three months.
He therefore asked the court to send the accused person to prison so that his family could have access to him.
Diri, however, prayed the court to keep Kanu in the custody of the DSS for security reasons. But the judge ruled that the defendant be kept in the custody of the Nigeria Prison Service, Kuje.
On December 23, 2015, he had refused to take his plea before Ahmed Mohammed, justice of the federal high court, Abuja, citing lack of confidence in the court.
This was after Adeniyi Ademola, another justice of the federal high court, Abuja, ordered the DSS to release him unconditionally, and after a chief magistrate court discharged and acquitted of charges of criminal intimidation and ownership of unlawful society.

Why I Made Changes To 2016 Budget – Buhari Finally Explains

By     No comments:
Buhari2

The president of Nigeria has cleared the air on the controversy generated by the missing budget as he explains why he was forced to make corrections to the budged after the earlier submission.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday gave reasons why he made corrections to the 2016 Budget he had earlier submitted to the joint National Assembly after controversy emerged that the budget had been altered.
Explaining his reasons, the president wrote in a letter to the House of Representatives as read by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara in Abuja.
The letter reads in part: “It will be recalled that on Tuesday, 22 December, 2015, I presented my 2016 budget proposals to the joint sitting of the National Assembly.
“I submitted a draft bill accompanied by a schedule of details.
“At the time of submission, we indicated that because the details had just been produced, we would have to check to ensure that there were no errors in the detailed breakdown contained in the schedule.
“That has since been completed and I understand that the corrections have been submitted.
“The National Assembly would therefore have the details as submitted on the 22nd and a copy containing the corrections submitted last week. It appears that this has led to some confusion.
“In this regard, please find attached the corrected version.
“This is the version the National Assembly should work with as my 2016 budget estimates.
“The draft bill remains the same and there are no changes in any of the figures.”
However, the letter didn’t go down well with some People Democratic Party members. Raising a point of order citing Sections 81 and 84 of the 1999 constitution (as amended), Rep. Leo Ogor (Delta-PDP), the Minority Leader of the House said that the provisions of the law did not give the president powers to amend budget, adding that such powers lie with the legislature. He thus urged the house to discard the letter.
The speaker however cleared the matter as he insisted that the budget was not amended but only corrected. He said that it is only the president that has powers to make corrections to the budget if he observes any error.
That didn’t go down well with PDP lawmakers who shouted a resounding “no, no!”. At the end, the speaker won the day.

According to a statement by the senior Special Assistant to Buhari on Media and Publicity, Shehu Garba, Buhari made the threat while speaking with Nigerians residing in Dubai earlier today.

"Terrorist Jihadi John" is dead - Islamic state media outlet confirms

By     No comments:

A media outlet associated with Islamic State on Tuesday released a eulogy for "Jihadi John," a member of the militant group who gained notoriety for his filmed execution of hostages, the monitoring organization SITE reported.

The militant was identified as Mohammed Emwazi, a British citizen of Arab origin. The U.S. military said in November it was "reasonably certain" it had killed him in a drone strike.
Emwazi was described in Islamic State's Dabiq magazine by his nickname "Abu Muharib al-Muhajir."
"On Thursday, the 29th of Muharram, 1437 (Nov. 12, 2015), Ab Muhrib finally achieved shahdah (martyrdom) for the cause of Allah, which he had sought for so long, as the car he was in was targeted in a strike by an unmanned drone in the city of Raqqah, destroying the car and killing him instantly," Dabiq said.

Synagogue: Court adjourns hearing in criminal trial

By     No comments:

A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja on Tuesday fixed January 27, 2016 for arguments in a criminal charge filed by the Lagos State Government against the Registered Trustees of Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) and two engineers over the September 12, 2014 collapsed building in which 116 people were killed.

Trial judge, Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo adjourned the matter for hearing of the applications filed by the engineers – Oladele Ogundeji and Akinbela Fatiregun, who are the 4th and 5th defendants respectively in the matter, challenging the validity of the mode of service of the court processes on them.

Ogundeji and Fatiregun, the contractors in charge of the collapsed building, were charged alongside the Registered Trustees of SCOAN, Hardrock Construction Company, and Jadny Trust Ltd for the offence of failing to obtain necessary building approvals and for murder of the 116 persons that died when the building built in the premises of Synagogue Church collapsed.

Specifically, the 111 criminal counts charge filed against the defendants bordered on their alleged failure to obtain approval for the collapsed building contrary to Section 41 of the Urban and Regional Planning Laws of Lagos State, and involuntary manslaughter contrary to Section 222 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State.

At the resumed hearing, the Lagos State Prosecution team led by the Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Idowu Alakija informed the court that the state had complied with the order of the court to serve the processes in the matter on the engineers by substituted means to their last known addresses.
Alakija said: “We have been able to serve the 4th and 5th defendants and there is proof of service to that effect in the court file.”

She, thereafter, presented the proof of service of the court processes before the court, but the engineers did not appear in court.
They both filled applications through their counsel challenging the jurisdiction of the court on the ground that substituted service was not known to the applicable laws in respect of the matter.

They also argued that there is a pending order of the Federal High Court in Lagos restraining the State Government from prosecuting them.

Meanwhile, the court has adjourned for hearing of the applications, after which the hearing of the main criminal charge would commence.

Jamie Foxx recues driver trapped in burning car in LA

By     No comments:

Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx can lay claim to a new starring role — real life hero.
Foxx braved flames to pull a motorist to safety from a burning pickup truck, one of his representatives confirmed for NBC News.

The actor, who won an Academy Award for his pitch-perfect portrayal of Ray Charles, found himself thrown into an unfamiliar part on Monday when he heard a crash outside the gates of his home in Hidden Valley, a secluded enclave north and west of Los Angeles in Ventura County.
Brett Kyle, 32, of Newbury Park, California, was driving "at a high rate of speed" around 8:30 p.m. PT when he flipped his 2007 Toyota Tacoma into a drainage ditch, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
"It struck a drainage pipe and concrete casing causing the vehicle to roll over multiple times," the report read. "The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side, and became engulfed in flames with Mr. Kyle trapped inside his vehicle."
That's when two men "ran to the burning, overturned truck in an attempt to free the driver," according to the report.
"One of the witnesses retrieved a rescue tool from his vehicle allowing the two citizens to break the window, cut the seat belt, and extricate the driver," the report stated.
Kyle was later taken to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center for his injuries and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
