Photos From The Festac Bank Robbery Incident Today

By     No comments:

The gun battle between a group of policemen and some armed robbers in the early hours of Tuesday, October 13, 2015 turned deadly as a woman and her 14-month-old baby were hit by the robbers’ stray bullets and died.

The Trent had reported that over 20 heavily armed bandits attacked Diamond and Access banks on 4th Avenue in Festac Town, Lagos State in a one-hour operation that has left a tragic trail of blood. The woman, identified as Mrs. Jane Ndirieka and her baby were hit in their house by stray bullets from the robbers shooting spree. The victim’s neighbours who spoke with our correspondent at their 4th Avenue flat say that Mrs. Ndirieka was shot twice, one in the chest and in other the right shoulder while she carried her baby. Her baby died on the spot while she was rushed to the hospital.

Our correspondent exclusively gathered from investigations at the scene of the robbery that the bandits arrived on three boats and berthed at the canal by the fresh fruits market on the 4th Avenue in Festac. They divided themselves into two groups.

Access Bank and Diamond Bank are located between two junctions. Diamond Bank is close to the 4th Avenue by 5th Avenue Junction while Access Bank is closer to the 4th Avenue by 23 Road Junction. One group of the dare-devil robbers who dressed in military fatigue set up a road block at the 4th Avenue by 5th Avenue Junction while the other team set up a road block by the 4th Avenue by 23 Road Junction.

Once they blocked the junctions, they began to shoot sporadically to scare off residents as they began to break down the doors of the banks. According to an eye-witness who spoke with our correspondent, the robbers also set off explosives which looked liked bottles at the scene.

A friend of the victim, Mrs. Jane Ndirieka, who was present with her in her house when she was hit by the robbers’ bullets tells The Trent that Mrs. Ndirieka was first rushed to a nearby hospital in Festac Town where she was rejected. All pleas made to the hospital to treat her was rebuffed. At this point, Ndirieka had lost a lot of blood and was losing consciousness.

While on the way to the government’s general hospital, she died in the car and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Her baby, who was in her arms when she was hit by the bullets which passed through the door and walls of her flat and hit her, died on the spot. (The sad photo of the dead baby is in the photo gallery below.)

Residents say that the police did not respond to any of their distress calls and the robbery operation went unchallenged for close to an hour.

The robbers shot a security guard at Diamond Bank during the operation. The security guard (name withheld) was rushed to a nearby hospital where the hospital staff who spoke with The Trent confirmed that he was conscious and an x-ray had been done to locate the bullet.

According to eye-witnesses, the robbers who were at least 20 in number, snatched two vehicles and used them to pack their loot from the two banks – Diamond and Access – before making their escape back to the waterside canal close to the fresh fruits market where they boarded their boats and fled.

Almost an hour after the robbers had fled the scene, the Area Commander of the Police arrived the scene with his team.

The gang of at least 20 armed robbers who stormed 4th Avenue, Festac Town in Lagos State would have attacked the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) located on the same street with Access Bank and Diamond Bank which were robbed, but for the intervention of an O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC) guard who single-handedly repelled them.

A group of armed bandits dressed in military fatigue, had in the early hours of Tuesday, October 13, 2015 attacked the Diamond and Access banks in the area in a one-hour operation which left a trail of blood.

The guard popularly called Agbashe, was said to have shot back at the robbers who targeted FCMB as the third bank in a chain of deadly attacks which left a woman and her 14-month-old baby dead.

Attempts by the robbers to gun down Agbashe proved abortive as their bullets failed to hit at him. While, his shots repelled the robbers. On noticing that their bullets were not affecting the OPC guard, the robbers abandoned their plans to rob the bank and fled.

Eye-witnesses who spoke with The Trent, said it was like watching a movie and Agbashe operated like he had a bullet-proof shield. They believe he was using a ‘juju’, African charm.

The police reportedly arrived at least 30 minutes after the robbers escaped in their boats after carting away unspecified amount of money from the two affected banks.

Photos Of Olu Falae's abductors

By     No comments:

The Department of State Service (DSS) today paraded two suspected abductors of former secretary to the government of the federation, Chief Olu Falae, who was abducted at his farm in Ondo state on September 21st and released on September 24th after paying a ransom of N5 million.

Parading the suspects, Abdullahi Usman (aka Kadiri) and Babawuro Kato pictured above before newsmen in Abuja, an operative of the service, Abdullahi Garba, said that the suspects were arrested on Oct. 5 at J. Zebra hotel in Lokoja town, Niger state.

He said contrary to reports, the abductors were mere criminals and that the abduction was not about Olu Falae being a statesman and prominent Yoruba leader. Garba appealed to Nigerians to shun attempts by mischief makers to give the incident an ethnic coloration to cause disaffection among the populace.
“To this effect, this service wishes to appeal to all Nigerians to be law-abiding and responsible in their commentary on sensitive issues affecting national security.”
When interrogated, the suspects, who confessed to carrying out the crime with one Dantijo, who ran away with the N5 million ransom paid to secure Falae's freedom, said they hatched the plan to kidnap the elder statesman just before the Sallah holiday as they needed money to celebrate the Muslim holiday with loved ones.

EFCC Chairman Lamorde sues The Sun Newspaper

By     No comments:
From The statement of claim from Festus Keyamo Chambers. Read below..
1. The Plaintiff is a Commissioner of Police and currently the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The Plaintiff has had a distinguished career having joined the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as the pioneer Director of Operations in 2003 and by dint of hard work and integrity rose to be the Chairman of the anti-graft agency.
2.           The Defendant is the Proprietor and Publisher of a popular Newspaper called Daily Sun which enjoys wide circulation and readership in Nigeria and abroad.
3.           The Plaintiff avers that as a function of his position, he is at the forefront of the fight against corruption in Nigeria and he has successfully investigated and prosecuted several corrupt individuals in Nigeria.
4.           The Plaintiff further avers that as a result of his exceptional career, he has received several awards and commendations from organizations across the world and is recognized by international organizations as a leading light on Nigeria’s fight against corruption.
5.           The Plaintiff further avers that in its Daily Sun Newspaper of Thursday, 8th October, 2015, the Defendant falsely and maliciously caused to be printed and published the following words of and concerning the Plaintiff:

“N1TRN LOOTED FUNDS LAMORDE, EFCC BOSS, IN SOUP”

6.           The Plaintiff further avers that at page 6 of its Daily Sun Newspaper of Thursday, 8th October, 2015, the Defendant falsely and maliciously caused to be printed and published the following words of and concerning the Plaintiff as an elaboration of the above stated headline:
“CHAIRMAN of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde, is presently being investigated over allegations of diversion of over N1 trillion from the sale of confiscated properties belonging to convicted public officials including former governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyesiegha and former Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun, among many others.
Daily Sun gathered that the Presidency's searchlight had actually been on the EFCC following complaints and reports that EFCC operatives were notoriously letting some financial crimes suspects off the hook rather than prosecute them.
The decision to launch a full-scale investigation, however, started after one George Uboh appeared before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions on August 23 where he alleged that Lamorde dipped his hands into the said funds.
It was gathered that after his appearance at the Senate, the Presidency picked interest in the matter and directed the Office of the National Special Adviser (NSA) to commence investigations into the allegations.
A National Assembly source said thereafter, the NSA, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd) reportedly swung into action.
"Series of complaints against Lamorde is his perceived slack supervision of his operatives. There have been series of allegations that operatives collect bribe from suspects and let them off the hook rather than investigate allegations thoroughly.
"This investigation is not a witch-hunt...It is meant to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they are no mere allegations but, they are weighty enough to warrant presidential scrutiny."
In his petition to the Senate, Uboh said the fraud allegedly perpetrated by Larmode dated back to his days as the Director of Operations of the EFCC between 2003 and 2007, as well as an acting Chairman of the commission between June 2007 and May 2008, when the then chairman of the anti-graft agency, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu, was away for a course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos.
Uboh, Chief Executive Officer of Panic Alert Security Systems, a security firm, in his petition dated July 31 accused Lamorde of some specific instances of under-remittance and non-disclosure of proceeds of corruption recovered from criminal suspects, including Balogun and Alamieyeseigha.
He assured the Senate that he would produce "overwhelming evidence" to back his claims against Lamorde.
Uboh also alleged that the EFCC had not accounted for "offshore recoveries" and that "over hall of the assets seized from suspects are not reflected in EFCC exhibit records."
The petitioner equally accused Lamorde of conspiring with some EFCC officers and external auditors ''to operate and conceal a recovery account in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and excluded the balances from your audited financial statements between 2005 and 2011."
"Lamorde continues to conceal the details of the unsold properties forfeited by both Tafa Balogun and DSP Alamieyeseigha despite receiving rent revenues from some estate agents on the said properties," he further alleged.”
7.           The said words in their natural and ordinary meaning (by direct reference and innuendos) meant and were understood to mean that:

(a)       The Plaintiff is a fraudulent and corrupt civil servant who engages in diversion of monies belonging to the government.
(b)       The Plaintiff is a bad and corrupt leader who encourages his Operatives to collect bribes from suspects.
(c)       The Plaintiff is a hypocrite whose fraudulent activities date back to 2003 when he was Director of Operations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

8.           The Plaintiff avers that the libelous publication by the Defendant was widely circulated and read by millions of people in the world and particularly in Nigeria where the Plaintiff has several associates, friends, family and professional colleagues.
9.           The Plaintiff avers that by reason of the publication of the words set out in paragraphs 5 and 6 above and their import set out in paragraph 7, the Plaintiff has been seriously injured in his character, credit, reputation and integrity and had been brought to public scandal, odium and contempt and has suffered damage.
10.       The Plaintiff further avers that immediately after the publication was released, he received numerous telephone calls from professional colleagues, international donor agencies, multinational organisations, relations, friends and religious leaders expressing their utmost disgust and contempt at the Plaintiff’s alleged disgraceful, unpatriotic and sacrilegious conducts and questioned the integrity of the Plaintiff.
11.       The Plaintiff avers that the spurious allegations made by the Defendant are untrue and actuated by malice with intent to malign and undermine the Plaintiff’s reputation.
PARTICULARS OF MALICE
(a)     The allegations in the publication are false and untrue.
(b)     The Defendants did not conduct any investigation into the truth of the allegations before publishing them.
(c)     The Defendant did not offer the Plaintiff any opportunity to respond to the allegations before publishing them.
(d)     By publishing the allegations in a sensational screaming headline, the Defendant evinced the intention to malign the Plaintiff and drag his reputation in the mud.

12.       The Plaintiff avers that he has suffered tremendous damage to his reputation and if the Defendant is not restrained, it will further publish injurious articles against the Plaintiff.
WHEREFORE, the Plaintiff claims against the Defendant as follows:
1.     The sum of N1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) only being damages for the words published of and concerning the Plaintiff which are libelous by direct reference and innuendo contained at the front page and page 6 of the Daily Sun of 8th October, 2015 titled ‘N1TRN LOOTED FUNDS: LAMORDE, EFCC BOSS, IN SOUP’ and further elaborated upon at page 6 of the said publication.

2.     A retraction and an unreserved apology by the Defendants for the words published of and concerning the Plaintiff which are libelous and contained at the front page and page 6 of the Daily Sun of 8th October, 2015 titled ‘N1TRN LOOTED FUNDS: LAMORDE, EFCC BOSS, IN SOUP’ and further elaborated upon at page 6 of the said publication and to be published with the same bold print and on the same front page as the headline complained of.

3.     AN ORDER OF PERPETUAL INJUNCTION restraining the Defendant whether by itself, its agents, privies or servants from further publishing or causing to be published any libelous, injurious or defamatory words against the Plaintiff.

4.     FOR SUCH FURTHER ORDER OR OTHER ORDERS as this Honourable court may deem fit to make in the circumstances of this case.

Senate Committee Suspends Petition Against Amaechi

By     No comments:

In a sudden turn of events, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public petitions has announced the suspension of the petition against former Rivers governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

Amaechi is one of the 21 ministerial nominees forwarded to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Earlier, we reported that Amaechi and another nominee, Amina Ibrahim, appeared before the Senate Committee to respond to the petitions against them ahead of their screening on Tuesday.

Speaking to newsmen on Monday, the committee chairman, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, explained that the decision to step down on the petition brought by Senator George Sekibo (PDP/Rivers State), was reached as a result of a pending suit against the charges on Amaechi.

The former governor is facing stiff opposition from his state government, which has thrown every hurdle on his path to becoming a minister.

The Rivers government is accusing Amaechi of large-scale corruption while in office.

Buhari Won't Be Petroleum Minister

By     No comments:

Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, who revealed this on Sunday in an interview with Channels Television, also said that the president is conscious of fair representation with respect to women and youths in the ministerial list.

“He is not going to be designated as Minister but will supervise the Ministry. When former President Olusegun Obasanjo while in office supervised that ministry for six years, was he called a petroleum minister? No, he was not,” Adesina said.

“The president is going to supervise and maybe, he would have minister of state to work along with him. I dare say, he has all it takes to supervise that ministry having been oil minister for three and half years in the past.

“President Buhari would respect the constitution. And the constitution says ministers must be appointed from each state and that means there must be minimum of 36 ministers. He would respect that.

“The president had said when the governors were appointing commissioners in their states, he never interfered, so he didn’t expect them to interfere in the choice of his ministers.

“That was the original position and then later, he came back to say when he had his list ready that he was going to run it by the governors, that is the position. I guess there must have been some consultations but it does not mean that the position of any government will be sacrosanct on the nominee.”

Adesina added that the age of the ministerial nominees does not matter to the president, saying: “These people who have been nominated are qualified and are Nigerians. Talking of age, there is a saying that ‘age does not matter. It does not mind, if you don’t mind it.’ I don’t think that age is an issue.

“And talking of age, you should rather talk about mental and chronological age. If you have a chronological age of 30, which makes you a youth, and mental age is not at par, what do we gain? Nothing.

“And you may have a chronological age of 68, which is the age of the oldest of the nominees; if that nominee now has a mental age of 15 or 20, what do we gain? We must rather talk of the mental age rather than the chronological age. It is not the chronological age that matters as long as that person has what he is bringing to the table.”

“God himself is ageless, so you can’t be talking of whether someone is old or not.”

Speaking on the women representation, Adesina suggested that the 15 names expected can be mainly for women.

“Talking about women, yes, three women on this list, 15 yet to come. If all the 15 are now women, what would you have to say? Just be sure that the president is mindful of fair representation in the country and he will do what is needful.

FG To Check Fulani Herdsmen, Farmers Clashes

By     No comments:

DISTURBED by the renewed hostilities between suspected Fulani herdsmen and farmers in various communities across the country, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has appealed to both parties to sheath their swords and embrace peace to contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

The agency said the appeal has become necessary as the Federal Government is doing everything possible to resolve the lingering misunderstanding between the warring parties.

In a statement, NOA’s Director-General, Mike Omeri, reacting to what he described as extreme positions being suggested by various socio-cultural groups on the clashes between the herdsmen and farmers, said a Strategic Action Plan Committee (SAPC) set up by the Federal Government will bring lasting solution to the crisis, especially if both parties heed government’s advice.

According to Omeri, the committee has a holistic approach, which includes both short and long term strategies to end the lingering clashes. “With such a committee, it is only complementary that farmers, herdsmen and Nigerians, irrespective of origin or occupation, contribute to this peace production effort,” Omeri stated.

While sympathising with victims, Omeri assured Nigerians that the government is studying the recommendations of the various committees with a view to streamlining them to meet the realities of the time.

According to the statement, “Herdsmen and farmers need each other, and Nigeria needs them both. It is therefore a collective responsibility for all of us to advocate peace amongst the two sets of agriculturalists.”

The NOA boss, who specifically called on community leaders and heads of associations to appeal to farmers and herdsmen to embrace peace, recalled the contributions of farmers and herdsmen to the country’s economic growth, saying “such contribution is needed now, more than ever before, with the dwindling global oil price.
