Anambra Police Releases Arrested Biafra Supporters

By     No comments:

The Anambra State Police Command has released 17 supporters of the director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who were arrested last week.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Ali Okechukwu, said this while speaking with newsmen in Awka on Monday.

Kanu’s supporters were picked up last week at various locations in Awka, the state capital, during solidarity protests.
The police spokesperson said the 17 persons comprised 13 females and four males.
Okechukwu said, “The Commissioner of Police just cautioned them and asked them to go.”
He expressed surprise that a national daily (not The PUNCH) misrepresented what transpired during the pro-Biafra’s demonstration in the state.
The PPRO said, “The Anambra tate police command has been drawn to the spurious publication on Police action in the dispersal of a crowd of misguided women and men on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at Awka, Anambra State.

“It is evident that on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, some misguided youths took to the Federal Highway, Onitsha/Enugu Expressway, harassing people and blocking the highway, causing heavy traffic jam and the attendant hardship to the innocent and unsuspecting citizens and commuters.

“On the receipt of information from well-meaning people of the state on the ugly development, the police command, oblivious of what and who were behind the sudden convergence of the crowd on the highway, dispatched police men to the scene.

“The police presence and the professional handling of the crowd dispersed them and eased up traffic.
“Only few of the hesitant were arrested, cautioned and released immediately the same day.”
He described a media report alleging that four MASSOB protesters were shot in the process as baseless and malicious, “couched in most unprofessional” manner.

Okechukwu added, “This publication is to say the least an attempt to malign the police command and punctuate the serene and peaceful atmosphere in the state.

“The reporter did not contact the Commissioner of Police or the Police Public Relations Officer for clarifications or otherwise, at least to ensure a balanced reportage.

“The Command is asking the reporter to immediately retract the report or come up with evidence of those who were shot, the hospital they are kept or any other verifiable evidence of the shooting.”

How I Hacked Into Bank Customers’ Accounts – Graduate (Pictured)

By     No comments:

A graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Babatunde Fatai, who is about to begin the mandatory national youth service programme, said he posed as a genuine lover to defraud foreign women and men whom he met on dating sites.

Fatai, who has been arrested by the Oyo State Police command for various Internet crimes, including hacking into bank accounts of many people in and outside Nigeria, had once been arrested for robbery and arraigned in court but granted bail.

He was arrested with the sum of N2.4m by men of the command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad in his Ogbomosho hideout. Also in his possession were: a Honda CRV with number plate KWL 280 CN, a Nissan Altima car with number plate KJA 963 CA, a Ford saloon car with number plate KRD 837 DQ and a Toyota Camry saloon car with number plate LSR 418 DJ.

Fatai said he had been in the Internet fraud business for a long time but could not remember how much he had fraudulently collected from his victims.

He said, “It is not easy to do Internet fraud. It takes painstaking effort.

“At times, I would go to dating sites to woo both men and women. I would make sure they fall in love with me by regularly sending love and romantic messages and even calling them until I deceived them into giving me their account details.

“At times, I would send fake emails to bank customers making it look like it emanated from their banks. Then I would ask them to change their password, PIN or other bank account security details.

“They would be required to input the old and new, but as soon as I get the old password, I would use it to hack into their accounts, transfer the money to the person I’m dating abroad, who would later send it to me through another means,” he explained.

CBN Moves To Ease Importers' Plight

By     No comments:

In a bid to ease the burden of importers that had made commitments to their partners abroad before the June 23, 2015 circular that restricted access to forex for 41 items, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stated that Letters of Credit established before the date of the circular can now be paid from the interbank forex market.

The CBN stated this in a circular dated October 23, 2015, signed by its Director, Trade and Exchange Department, Olakanmi Gbadamosi, a copy of which was posted on its website at the weekend.

The circular was titled: “Re: Inclusion of some imported goods and services on the list of items not valid for foreign exchange in the Nigerian foreign exchange markets.”

It was gathered that the central bank’s forex curb had made it difficult for Nigerian businesses to pay their vendors abroad, with huge debt owed to their credit guarantors abroad.
But the CBN in the latest circular stated that “confirmed/unconfirmed Letters of Credit established before the release of the circular on June 23, 2015, in respect of the 41 items excluded from the forex market can now be paid from the interbank foreign exchange market.”

It however stressed that the circular applies only to the Letters of Credit established for the 41 items prior to the date of the circular. It directed banks to render weekly return on the negotiated Letters of Credit to its Director, Trade and Exchange.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no bank or bureau de change is to provide forex for any of the items in respect of the Form ‘M’ established after June 23, 2015,” it added.

The CBN had in June officially stopped the sale of dollars for a list of 41 items as it seeks to reduce pressure on the naira as well as preserve the country’s external reserves. These items included rice, cement, margarine, palm kernel/palm oil products/vegetable oil, meat and processed meat products, vegetable and processed vegetable products, poultry –chicken, eggs, turkey - private airplanes/jet, Indian Incense, tinned fish in sauce - Geisha/Sardines, cold-rolled steel sheet and galvanised steel sheets. In addition, sourcing of forex for the importation of toothpicks, glass and glassware, kitchen utensils, tables, textiles, woven fabrics, clothes, plastic and rubber products, soap and cosmetic, tomatoes/tomato paste, had been banned.

Female NTA Newscaster Disarms Robber (Pictured)

By     No comments:

A suspected armed robber is now in police net in Benin, Edo State, after the lady he attempted to rob disarmed him. The victim, a female newscaster with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), was said to have given the suspect, identified as Stanley, the fight of his life when he tried to rob her. She succeeded in collecting the robber’s locally-made pistol from him.

The suspect was handed over to policemen from Oba Police Station, Benin. During interrogation, Stanley mentioned names of his gang members. The police went after the gang and arrested five members. The leader of the gang is, however, still at large. The newscaster, who wished to remain anonymous, said she went to Benin from Lagos, for a wedding when the incident occurred.

She said she was cleaning her car, around 5:30am, when the suspect appeared with his gun and ordered her to give him money. She added: “I was cleaning the car when I heard someone ordering me not to make a noise. He had been hiding behind my car all this while.

He had a gun with him. He said I should take him inside the house and give him money. I begged him not to shoot, that I will give him the money. I also appealed to him that my sister, whom I lodged with, is heavily pregnant. I told him that my sister may go into force labour at the sight of the gun. He was not interested in my pleas. He held the gun to my waist. As we got close to the entrance of the sitting room, I summoned courage. “I screamed Jesus! I did not know what came over me, but I suddenly turned and grabbed the gun.

I struggled with him and turned the gun to his chest. He bit me. I bit him back. As we struggled, we reached where my car was parked. I screamed and started calling for help. My brother inlaw ran out. He attacked the robber and kicked him until he fell flat on his face.”

The shout attracted residents who rushed out and joined in wrestling the gun from the suspect. He was eventually beaten up mercilessly. The residents wanted to beat him to death, but others suggested they hand him over to the police.

Recovered from Stanley were a locally-made gun, three cartridges, a wallet, a phone and a wristwatch. The seller of the gun has also been arrested. Police investigation revealed that Stanley is a commercial bus driver. But Stanley claimed he did not know why he took to robbery.

He said: “It was my gang members that gave me the gun. I targeted the house because I thought I could rob people living there successfully. I entered the compound by jumping the fence. I never expected that the lady would react by grabbing my gun. I planned the operation in my house. I entered the compound around 2am.”

PDP Says PMB Not Equipped To Lead In A Democracy

By     No comments:

Read Press Statement Below:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) raises a rallying cry to all its members, supporters and lovers of democracy across the country to rise up and use all lawful means to resist anti-democratic forces, now using the judiciary and security agencies in their desperate scheme to subvert the will of the people and destroy the nation’s democracy.

The party said though it seeks peace, it is not ready to accept the peace of a graveyard, neither is it willing to surrender the mandate freely given to it by the people in any part of the country, particularly in Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Delta, Abia, Taraba and other states where it won in the last general elections.

“Let it be known, and clearly too, that no matter the strong-arming, threats and manipulations by the APC government, the PDP is not willing to, and will never surrender the mandate freely given to us by the people in states where we won in the last general elections, neither are the people of those states willing to allow sectional invaders to exert influence on those to be in charge of their affairs” the party said in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh on Sunday.

The PDP said the desperation so far exhibited by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government in manipulating sensitive agencies of state like the judiciary and the security to further its bid to take over the rich states of Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and Delta is totally against the spirit of democracy and peace bestowed by the PDP in conceding defeat at the Presidential election, but instead, an affront to the people and recipe for crisis in the polity.

The party maintained that the prejudiced rulings by the Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states governorship elections tribunals, with their inherent contradictions, were a direct fallout of interferences from the APC and some elements within the office of the President of the Court of Appeal, adding that they should be held responsible should there be any break down of law and order in the system.

It also strongly cautioned against any interference in the Rivers and Akwa-Ibom cases at the appeal level as well as any further intrusion in the Abia, Taraba and Delta governorship election tribunals, which the APC is already boasting of controlling. The PDP said such would be a clear invitation to chaos in the land.

“In the last five months, after conceding defeat at the Presidential elections and other polls where we lost, Nigerians are witnesses to the fact that the PDP has remained calm and steadfast to its commitment to providing mature, decent and civil opposition with more interest on the peace, unity and corporate interest of our dear nation.

“However, the ruling party and the APC Federal Government in their dictatorial inclinations are much more interested in playing crude, selfish and sectional politics and trying to use manipulation of judicial processes to forcefully take over states where we genuinely won in the elections.

“Nigerians have noted APC’s definition of credible elections wherein governorship elections in Imo, Ogun, Plateau, Lagos and Yobe are all credible while those of Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Delta, Taraba and Abia are rigged and must by all means be annulled.

“In the light of the foregoing therefore, leaders of the PDP across the country are now converging on a consensus not to surrender our national destiny and fate to the whims and caprices of the sectional interests of the Daura and Bourdillon Mafia.

“We want all to know that this party is able, willing and now ready to call up our members and supporters to use all means within the limits provided by the laws of the land to resist this evil plan to decimate the PDP and opposition. The peace we seek is not that of a graveyard, it is such as guaranteed by a well-recognized democratic system that treats all as equals before the law, irrespective of partisan and political affiliations.

“We hereby raise a rallying cry to all our members and supporters of PDP nationwide, all patriotic citizens and all lovers of democracy to join the PDP in this fight to save our nation from the hands of the lying, deceitful and false prophets, who are bent on parading themselves as cruel conquerors of our democracy.

“Furthermore, we request the international community to note that never in the history of our democracy has the nation witnessed such a divisive and anti-people government, whose actions have so polarized the polity, and undermined national unity and cohesion, a development that spells doom for our democracy, if not checked.

“We are therefore duty bound to counsel President Muhammadu Buhari to be cautious of tendencies that provide avenues for the destruction of the nation’s democracy, which he is a huge beneficiary of.

“In the same vein, we call on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed to note the looming danger and save the nation’s democracy and the institution of the judiciary by immediately checking negative actions emanating from elements operating within the office of the President of the Court of Appeal.

“Finally, it has become necessary to remind all that this democracy was built on the principle of the rule of law and no political party, individual or group must be allowed to, by any means, appropriate or attempt to appropriate the will of the people at any time and under any guise whatsoever.”

Signed:

UK Plans To Deport 29,000 Nigerians

By     No comments:

The Nigeria High Commission in London says it is worried by the migration and removal policy of the UK Government, which has placed deportation tag on 29,000 Nigerians.

The Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in London, Olukunle Bamgbose, gave the indication in his office when he spoke with State House Correspondents covering Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s visit to London.

He said the migration policy came about following the migration crisis created by the troubled regions in the world.

“I think about 29,000 Nigerians have been designated to be deported.

“We are insisting that due process must be followed before Nigerians are really removed from the UK to Nigeria,’’ he said.

Mr. Bamgbose gave four conditions that should be met by the UK immigration office before the commission could accept the migration and deportation agenda.

“First, we must ensure that they are really Nigerians; they are medically fit to travel; all the legal processes must have been completed and that they have role to play in Nigeria.

“You do not expect someone who has not been to Nigeria for 30 years to 40 years, and does not have any family and you want to deport him.

“He will constitute social problems to us in Nigeria; so these are the sore points at this moment that we have,’’ the envoy said.

Mr. Bamgbose noted that in spite of the challenge, the relationship between Nigeria and UK had deepened, adding that the UK is ready to engage with Nigerians in various aspects, in defence, immigration, trade and investment.

“In 2012 trade volume between the two countries was about four billion pounds, which has doubled now.

“But with what we now have British investors are ready to move into Nigeria in a massive way.

“I expect that in the next two to three years the trade volume will triple and go to about 12 billion pound or even more.”

Mr. Bamgbose attributed the rise to the new confidence the foreign investors had in Nigeria and the new administration.

“The willingness of the British businessmen to even want to come to Nigeria is very important.

“Because, hitherto, the way we were running the government they did not have that confidence in government.

“They are not really sure whether they can go into Nigeria and invest.

“Now with the new administration, what they believe the new administration can do and the fidelity with which the new administration has brought to governance that is the first thing.

“You have to have the confidence of those who are going to Nigeria to invest and I think with what is going on now they are very confident that they can go into Nigeria and invest,’’ he said.

The envoy said the confidence also elevated the level of diplomatic service of the country.

“But since the new administration came in we have found our bounce, there is that diplomatic bounce once again.

“One the Federal Government has taken the batch on the Boko Haram, they are being decimated; also the energy problem is being addressed frontally also again the issue of graft is also being addressed.

“We have found our bounce and as diplomats here we are going to engage our colleagues from other countries without necessarily being apologetic by our country,’’ he added.

Mr. Bamgbose recalled that when the VP met with some MPs, “he was told that we have British businessmen, who are interested in investing up to 1.8 billion pounds in Nigeria.

“That is huge but it is because of the confidence that they have in the leadership of the new administration in Nigeria,’’ he said.

Blatter Endorses Kalu For FIFA President

By     No comments:

Suspended FIFA president Sepp Joseph Blatter has openly declared his support for former Abia state Governor Dr Orji Uzor Kalu to occupy the exalted position of FIFA President, even as he has faulted the candidature of former Secretary General Jerome Champagne and Prince Alli of Jordan.

Speaking in Zurich, Blatter said ” The position of the FIFA president is too important to be left to just anybody. I have heard of some candidates who want to take over from me. But I find the Businessman from Nigeria Kalu very qualified and interesting because he is not only a businessman, but a politician with lots of contacts and corporate experience. He can bring his great experiences to bear in the running of world football.

He is passionate about the game. I remember how he sponsored one of Nigerian clubs to win the CAF championship twice. He is a man that can take world football to the next level”, Blatter told the Swiss Radio monitored on Sunday.

Blatter said though Kalu had not formally declared his interest, it was in the best interest of Africa to nominate him because of his deep passion for the game. “If Africa hopes to win the support of other federations, then they must queue behind the Nigerian business man. Football has developed beyond just anybody taking over.

I sacked Jerome Champgne in 2010 so how can he come back to lead an Association he tried to destroy. You need a man who can command respect and win friends for football.

With Kalu Africa stands a better chance, he concluded. CAF is expected to meet next week to decide on a candidate for the election scheduled for next year. Orji Kalu and Segun Odegbami are the two candidates vying for the post from Africa,
