Saraki Defends Social Media Censorship Bill, Says People Must Be Held Responsible For Their Action

By     No comments:
Bukola Saraki

In spite of criticism trailing the ongoing bill by the Senate to censor social media in the country, Senate President Bukola Saraki on Thursday vowed that the Red Chamber would not back down from passing the proposed law.
Saraki, who noted that social media was a major ingredient for the growth of democracy in the country, however, said the Senate could no longer ignore the fact that it was being abused by some elements.
Speaking yesterday when Senator Dino Melaye (APC/Kogi West) raised the issue under matters of urgent importance, during the day’s plenary, the Senate president lamented activities of some social media platforms, which he said, had published numerous materials to undermine the integrity of the red chamber.
While faulting the backlash the proposed social media censorship bill has generated, Senate President Saraki insisted that senators cannot be blackmailed to drop the bill.
Saraki, while acknowledging the excesses of some of the social media users, however, stressed the existence of freedom of speech in the nation’s law book.
Even as he advised that the social media should be fair and accurate in their reportage, Saraki said the Senate cannot let “a few bad eggs” taint the image of the social media.
“People must be held responsible for their action. I believe what has been raised is important”, Saraki said.

Terrorism: U.S. To Implement Security Master Plan In Nigeria

By     No comments:
PMB-US Ambassador-James-Entwistle

The U.S. says it has concluded plans to begin the implementation of the Security Governance Initiative (SGI), a comprehensive security master plan aimed at defeating terrorism and security threats in Nigeria.
The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James Entwistle, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja when he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Interior, retired Lt. Gen. Abudulrahman Dambazau.
The SGI is an initiative of the U.S. Government that offers enhanced approach to security sector assistance beginning with six African countries, including Nigeria.
The envoy said that a crack team from the SGI would be arriving Nigeria in January 2016 as part of efforts to assist Nigeria in dealing with all forms of security threat to the country.
“We are ready to partner with you on security. As you know the Security Governance Initiative (SGI) is meant to enhance the security sector, so we will be having a team here in Nigeria by January”, he said.
He explained that the SGI would be implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Government so as to ensure a holistic and efficient outcome.
Entwistle also said that the U.S. had concluded plans for the training of the Nigerian Police and other security agencies so as to professionally deal with the threat of terrorism and all other forms of crime.
“As the situation in the North-East improves, we need to look at issues of the Police going back to the North-East and explore ways we can help with their training”, he said.
He, however, stressed that all forms of assistance and support will be at the request of the Nigerian Government as demonstrated by President Muhammadu Buhari when he visited the U.S. recently.
In his response, Dambazau expressed gratitude to the U.S. envoy for the visit and assured of the readiness of the Federal government to continue to partner with the U.S.
He said the SGI was a welcome initiative that must involve all stakeholders in the security sector for it to succeed.
“We want to assure you that on our own part we will fulfill our own part of the partnership (SGI) and we are confident that you will also fulfill your own part of the initiative”, he said.
He described the Ministry of Interior as very crucial to internal security in Nigeria and emphasised the need for all hands to be on deck to ensure peace and stability in the country. (NAN)

Foreign Trips Key To Buhari’s Policies – Lai Mohammed

By     No comments:

President Muhammadu Buhari has made over ten foreign trips in less than seven months and has become a subject of criticism because of this. But the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has stressed the importance of the trips.
According to him, the trips are critical to the implementation of the key policies of Buhari’s administration which includes enhancing security, jump-starting the economy, creating jobs and fighting corruption
. ”Nigerians, whether in the ruling or the opposition parties, have a right to ask questions about the activities of their President, but it is absolutely important that they do so from an informed, rather than partisan or sensational, standpoint,” he said in a statement on Friday.
The Minister explained that most of the President’s trips – to Nigeria’s neighbouring countries of Benin, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, as well as to Germany, the US, France and the UN – were devoted to rallying regional and global support for the war against terrorism.
Image result for Foreign Trips Key To Buhari’s Policies”He was in Germany at the invitation of the G7 to solicit support from the Industrialized Nations for the war against terrorism. No one who has witnessed the killings and maiming in the past seven years by Boko Haram will call such trips frivolous. After all, the security and welfare of the citizens are the reason for the existence of any government.
”The President’s visit to South Africa was to attend the regular summit of the African Union; the trip to Ghana was aimed at fostering better relations with a brotherly country; the trip to India was for the India-Africa summit that provided the opportunity to explore ways of enhancing Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) from Indian investors, while the trip to Iran was to attend the forum of Gas Exporting Countries, a veritable platform for discussing how to better harness Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for industrial/domestic consumption
and export, at a time of dwindling oil prices.
”The President also travelled to Malta to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, from where he travelled to Paris for the UN Conference on Climate Change. The President’s second trip to South Africa since assuming office is for the China-Africa forum. On the few
occasions that the President has embarked on a State Visit, he has tied that to an agenda that will further the quest for support for the war against terror and the efforts to enhance FDIs, thus stimulating economic growth and creating jobs,”the Minister said.
”President Buhari is well respected on the global stage for his high integrity, his transparency, his patriotism and his purposeful leadership. It is important to leverage this respect in such a way that Nigeria can become a major player, either in the realms of economy or global diplomacy,” the Minister said.
He said the President had embarked on the trips under a very stringent budget, cutting his delegations to numbers far below what his  predecessors used to travel with, while even the trimmed entourage had received reduced allowances on the occasions that the host governments have provided accommodation and feeding.

Cristiano Ronaldo is in a gay relationship with kickboxer Badr Hari and has had cosmetic surgery, French journalist alleges

By     No comments:

French journalist and TV host Estelle Denis has made some eye popping allegations against Real Madrid footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo. Denis says Cristiano Ronaldo's frequent trips in his private jet to Morocco is because he is in a gay relationship with kickboxer boxer Badr Hari and also claimed the superstar footballer has had cosmetic surgery on his nose.

Denis’ comments followed a report that Ronaldo’s recent behaviour was “causing concern” at Real Madrid.

The report hinted that officials at the football club frowned up the player’s frequent visits to Morocco and damaging his performances on the pitch.

“Ronaldo takes three or four jets a week to see a friend in Morocco to cuddle,” he said, leading to shocked gasps from the audience.

His comments come after the Ronaldo and his new BFF shared pics of their BROmance .

During one of such trips, kick boxer Hari posted a photo on Facebook of him holding up Ronaldo.
“Just married,” the caption said. “Always there to pick you up, bro.”

Other snaps of the trip shared a candle-lit image of a traditional Moroccan meal, as well as a picture of the two sportsmen post “wedding”.

Ronaldo has in the past denied being gay, saying he is content with his sexuality.
Back in 2010, Lionel Messi's arch rival supported Portugal’s decision to allow gay marriage.
“As I am Portuguese, I try to keep myself informed about what is happening in my country,” he said at the time.
“We must respect the choices of each other, because, after all, all citizens should have the same rights and responsibilities.”

Biafra Protest: Don’t Create Boko Haram in the East, IYC tells FG

By     No comments:

The President of Igbo Youth Congress (IYC), Mr Bright Ezeocha, says he is afraid that the use of violence against pro-Biafra protesters by the government might give rise to the creation of a terrorist group in the manner of Boko Haram in the East.

Ezeocha said this in an interview with the Tribune in Lagos when reacting to the alleged killing of some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) by security agents on Wednesday.
Ezeocha said he had urged the Federal Government to handle the issue with care by dialoguing with the people to avoid a repeat of history.

He alleged that what led to the creation of the dreaded Boko Haram terrorist group was the killing of one of their leader, Muhammad Yusuf. He, therefore, raised the fear that the Federal Government was already towing this line again.
“I want to condemn the killing of the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). It is uncalled for, and never expected in the 21st century that the law enforcement agencies do not know how to disperse protesters except to open bullet on unarmed protesters,” he said.

Why We Must Cut N18,000 Minimum Wage Or Sack Workers – Governors

By     No comments:
Governors

Nigerian governors will eventually reduce the federal minimum wage of N18,000 or downsize because of the current economic crunch, the chairman of the body of governors has said.

The chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and Zamfara state governor, Abdulaziz Yari, said on Thursday that irrespective of public condemnations of the plan, it would not be economically feasible to retain the same workforce and pay same amount of money.

Governors: We can’t pay N18, 000 minimum wage

According to him, funds allocated from the Federation Account could no longer sustain the expenses of the state as the internally generated revenue was still below par in some states.

Governors had two weeks ago declared that they could no longer cope with the N18, 000 minimum wage. The pronouncement caused a stir as Nigerians kicked against it.

The governors of Rivers and Edo rejected the plan.

Emerging from a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House Abuja, on Thursday, Mr. Yari said the governors were considering the nation’s economic situation.

“Let me make it very clear to Nigerians, governor’s forum is not the enemy of labour in any way. Rather, we have been working together. But what we are saying, (because not only Gov. Wike but also my friend in the comradeship, Adams Oshiomhole, kicked against the decision)…

“What we said is that when the National Assembly enacted the law of paying N18, 000 minimum wage, then the oil was about $118 per barrel and today where we are oil is $41 per barrel.

“So, if it continues like that definitely we will find it difficult to continue. We have to sit down with the labour and see how we can review; either continue or downsizing, or see what we are going to do.

“We want to find a solution because we have to be realistic that we have so many things to touch. There is infrastructure deficit, there is need for security, there are other things like social lives of our people and nation as a state,” he said.

The governor said from the federation account, some states received N400 million, N500 million while others received N55 million.

“And there are other issues, not even the salary, their pension is over a billion. So, how can we continue borrowing and servicing the service aspect of our expenditure, or overhead.
How can we do that?

“We are telling the public that we are planning to sit down with the president and his team and the state governors as a team and the experts to come out with the way forward and how we are going to handle the poor state of the economy in the country.

“But what we have on ground now will not be realistic if it continues the way it is without having other sources from the economy and still relying on oil that is being sold for $118 dollar per barrel and now down to $41 and think that we can continue behaving or misbehaving the way we are doing, if there is anything like that,” he added

Messi Beats Ronaldo To Win LA Liga Award

By     No comments:

Lionel Messi was named La Liga’s best striker and best player in the 2014-15 season at the LFP (Spanish Football League) Gala Awards Ceremony on Monday, helping Barcelona to claim five prizes to rival club Real Madrid’s three.
Messi, 28, scored 43 La Liga goals last campaign as Barca won the league title as well as the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
It is the sixth time the Argentina international has won the prizes, with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo beating him in 2013-14.
“I’m proud to receive this award ahead of so many important players in La Liga,” Messi, who was named on the FIFA Ballon d’Or shortlist alongside Ronaldo and Barca teammates Neymar, said.
“This award in particular I want to dedicate to my son Thiago [aged 3] even if he still doesn’t understand very well. Every time I leave the house he gets angry and asks me: ‘Papa, are you going again to score goals?’ This award is for him.”
Ronaldo was named the Fans’ Five-Star Player after supporters voted for their favourite player on mahou.es following each matchday last season. Messi, whose best player award was determined by technical data, added: “I am happy to be once more among the three best, and to go to another gala.
“Happy to be with Neymar. Luis Suarez also deserved to be among the three best, but that is to take nothing away from Cristiano Ronaldo, who also deserved it.”
Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, forward Neymar and head coach Luis Enrique also claimed prizes at the ceremony.
Bravo was named best goalkeeper after conceding 19 times during the 2014-15 season, and he said “being here is an enormous privilege and receiving this award is a dream come true.”
Neymar was named best player from the Americas, and the Brazil star said: “I am really happy to have won the award. I thank my teammates for all they do.”
Real Madrid duo Sergio Ramos and James Rodriguez were named best defender and midfielder respectively, while Valencia’s Sofiane Feghouli was named best African player.
