Ogun Confirms First Lassa Fever Case, Places 60 People Under Watch

By     No comments:

The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, on Thursday said the state had recorded the first case of Lassa fever.

Ipaye said this during a press conference held at Oke Mosan in Abeokuta, thestate capital.

He identified the index case in the state as a 28-year-old lady, “discovered on Wednesday February 3 at 8:10pm.”

Ipaye said the victim had travelled to Ebonyi for a burial and returned to Ogun on January 15, and later started manifesting the symptoms of the viral disease.

He said, “The victim had accessed treatment at Ruby Medical Centre, Ota. She was said to have been moved another hospital, Central Specialist Hospital, Ota. It was the management of the Central Specialist Hospital that called the state Ministry of Health.”

“We moved in immediately and took her in. We have shut the two health facilities for decontamination.”

Ipaye said the victim had been transferred to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, one of the isolation centres for the disease.

He added, “The confirmatory test was done and the result came in last night. We started emergency procedures immediately and she has been moved to the isolation centre in Sagamu.

“She has been given the drug, ribavirin and still under observation. She has had fever and other symptoms but have not started bleeding.

“She has passed through two private hospitals, which have now been shut for decontamination.”

Ipaye also said 60 persons who had contact with the victim in the two health facilities including three members of her family were under watch.

He said the first 35 contacts were health workers in the first hospital, 22 in the second one and three others were family members of the victim.

He said, “These 60 people have been placed under surveillance, but I want to appeal to the residents not to panic. They must be vigilant and maintain good hygiene in their homes.”

Ipaye commended the management of the Central Specialist Hospital for its patriotism in contacting the government and saving the state from the scourge of Lassa fever.

The state government had on Tuesday January 26, raised the alarm on 19 suspected cases of the Lassa fever who had contact with the first index case in Ahmadiyyah Hospital, Ijaiye in Ojokoro Local Government Area of Lagos but live in Ogun State.

Ipaye, however, said all the 19 persons have been declared free of the disease, “because they did not manifest the symptoms of the disease, not even of malaria fever.”

My posting to a new Parish is a witch hunt — Rev. Ejike Mbaka

By     No comments:
Rev Ejike Mbaka

Catholic priest, Reverend Father Ejike Camillus Mbaka yesterday relocated to his new duty post at Our Lady Parish, Umuchigbo, Njinike accompanied by hundreds of his parishioners admirers and well wishers.
He was recently transferred from Christ the King parish, GRA, Enugu where he had, over the years, built a cult like fellowship on the strength of precision of most of his prophecies and miracles recorded during prayer sessions at his Adoration Centre .
Mbaka prophesised the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of last election and also warned him last month of a plot to kill him.
His followers believe his transfer is a punishment.
Mbaka himself said yesterday that his posting is a witch hunt.
As early as 7am yesterday, a crowd had started forming at the Christ the King (CKP) GRA, Enugu preparatory for the movement.

Immotarlity For Humans : Scientists Have Been Able To Extend The Lifespan Of Mice And Want To Start Testing In Humans

By     No comments:

What if the key to immortality, or simply a longer, healthier life, is as simple as getting rid of some bad cells? Seems too good to be true, but a new study being called "this decade's biggest breakthrough in understanding the complex world of physical aging" indicates an anti-aging pill might be possible after all.

The research published today in the journal Nature by the Mayo Clinic, had the scientists genetically modify mice and then give them a special drug, which seeks and destroys senescent cells. A senescent cell has generally been seen as a neutral cell that's stopped dividing and reproducing, reports Popular Mechanics. However, these cells also tend to be associated with diseases related to aging such as osteoporosis.

When the senescent cells were destroyed, the mice were able to live about 25% longer than mice that didn't take the pill. That's eight months longer and a one-third longer lifespan, writes Fortune. Meanwhile, in that longer life, the mice were healthier — they fended of cancer longer, had fewer eyesight problems, less fat buildup, and improved heart and kidney health.

As soon as the study was completed, a company with a freaky science-fiction-y name called Unity Biotechnology launched plans for taking the research and curing age-related diseases in mankind.

"Imagine drugs that could prevent and maybe even cure arthritis or heart disease or loss of eyesight. It's an incredible aspiration," said the company in a press release. "If we can translate this biology into medicines, our children might grow up in a different world than we did. There will be many obstacles to overcome, but our team is committed and inspired to achieve our mission."

But are we ready for human testing? Not quite. It's not as easy to genetically modify humans as it is for mice. Also, the research found a negative repercussion to eliminating senescent cells — our Wolverine superpower of healing was turned off. That's because senescent cells are known to play a role in healing and scar-tissue formation.

Pesidential Arms Audit Panel Nigeria A 13- man Presidential arms purchase audit Panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to audit arms purchased between 2007 and 2015 has submitted its temporary report, confirming arm purchase within the period under review.

Presidential Arms Audit Panel Nigeria A presidency source told TheFocus that President Buhari set up and inaugurated the panel to conduct preliminary investigations after it was discovered the the immediate past National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) diverted N13.2 billion of fund meant for procurement of arms for the Nigeria Military.
The panel, made up of distinguished Nigerians toured military formations across the country to undertaking physical verification of military hardware and equipment either bought or claimed to have been bought during the period under review.

Our source said the interim report of the audit Panel showed that the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan purchased arms and equipment for the military , which were distributed to various military formations across the country particularly the North east geo-political zone for counter insurgency operations.

The panel however discovered absence of contract agreements, award of contracts beyond authorised thresholds, transfer of public funds for unidentified purposes and general non-adherence to provisions of the Public Procurement Act.

According to the arms probe panel, The award letters for the equipment and arms purchase contracts contained misleading delivery dates, suggesting fraudulent intent.

How Rapper P Diddy Hired Hitmen To Kill Tupac Shakur

By     No comments:

Former LAPD detective claims P Diddy was behind fatal drive-by shooting of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996

Shakur, 25, was murdered in a drive-by shooting in 1996 in the middle of a feud between rival rap groups from the East and West Coasts of US. Now retired, Detective Greg Kading has said the entire hit was set-up by Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs, who was then known as Puff Daddy.

Kading also claims that the murder of Combs’ best friend Christopher ‘Biggie Smalls’ Wallace six months later was in revenge for the murder of Shakur.

Kading’s claims appear in a new documentary that suggests Combs hired Crips gang member Duane Keith ‘Keffe D’ Davis to kill Shakur for $1million.

Davis was also allegedly hired to kill Shakur’s manager Marion ‘Suge’ Knight. Instead Kading said Keffe passed the hit onto nephew Orlando ‘Baby Lane’ Anderson.

It was therefore Anderson who shot Skakur dead after he left a Mike Tyson fight on September 7, 1996, Kading claims.
The documentary, Murder Rap, includes a 2008 interview with Keffe where he claims to have heard Diddy issue a call for Tupac’s murder.

How BVN Exposes 23,306 ‘ghost Workers’ On Fed Govt Payroll

By     No comments:

No fewer than 23,306 names are to be deleted from the Federal Government’s payroll.

A team probing multiple salary payments recommended 23,306 civil servants and some banks for thorough investigations.

The government has started deleting the indicted civil servants from its payroll, The Nation learnt yesterday.

It was also learnt that some of those affected have tendered their resignation letters to pre-empt dismissal from service and prosecution.

According to a source, of 312,306 civil servants, whose bank accounts have so far been checked through the Bank Verification Number (BVN) platform, 23,306 have issues with their accounts.

The source claimed that with the adoption of the BVN for salary payment, the Federal Ministry of Finance has so far checked the details of about 312,000 civil servants— a development said to have led to the discovery of many irregularities in salary payment.

“Out of the accounts of about 312,000 civil servants processed so far, the ministry was said to have uncovered irregularities in the account of about 23,306 of them, who were suspected to have been collecting double salary.

“These indicted individuals are in two categories. In the first group, we found out that the names of some civil servants, whose salaries are being processed, are different from the names on the accounts where their salaries are paid. What this means is either those in this category are drawing salary from two sources (which could be different agencies), or they are ghost workers,” the source said.

The source added that the probe also showed that salaries were being paid to some inactive accounts, thus raising the suspicion that government was merely making payment to ghost workers.

But it was gathered yesterday that the Federal Government has placed some banks under watch for their roles in the salary scam.

The probe panel was said to have discovered that some of the inactive accounts were domiciled in a particular branch of a bank.

It was learnt that over 300 accounts of some civil servants were opened on the same day and all of them have become dormant.

The Special Adviser to the Minister of Finance on Media Matters, Mr. Festus Akanbi, said last night, “The public will be appropriately briefed when the full report is ready.”

The adoption of the BVN became inevitable due to the failure of the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS) to effectively deal with the issue of ghost workers in the federal civil service.

A source in the ministry explained that the strategy of using BVN rather than requiring the physical presence of each worker “significantly simplified and accelerated the progress of the project and at a lower cost than previously incurred”.

Lagos State ready to host marathon - Ayorinde

By     No comments:

The Lagos State Government has affirmed its readiness to host over 20,000 Local and International Marathoners in the Access Lagos City Marathon race scheduled to come up tomorrowFebruary 6th, 2016.
According to the State's Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, all logistics have been put in place and Lagos is ready to host the event as well as replicate an international version of the event in the state come Saturday.

He confirmed that several renowned marathoners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and other countries are already in town for the event, while local and other athletes are fully prepared to participate in the event.

He said the State Government has put in place water-tight security measures to protect athletes and other participants in the international event adding that a team of motorized and motorbike escorts have been provided to monitor the event throughout the duration of the race.
“Similarly we have put in place a team of fully trained and well equipped medical team that will accompany all the participants from the kick-off of the race to the end”, Ayorinde said.

He said a combined team of traffic managers will also be on ground to control traffic along the designated routes, while alternate routes have also been provided for motorists during the 7 hours event.
“The Lagos State Government is therefore appealing to Lagosians to come out en masse and cheer these athletes as well as encourage them during the course of the race,” he said.
While regretting any inconvenience the traffic restriction would cause during the period, the Commissioner said Lagosians are reminded that the gains inherent in hosting the event will further boost the economy of the State as well as promote Lagos as a destination worthy of visit by tourists, sportsmen and investors.

2016 Prophecies by Dr. Chris Okafor known for his unrivalled prophetic accuracy.

By     No comments:

Dr. Chris Okafor, the General Overseer of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, a.k.a Liberation City is popularly known for his unrivalled prophetic accuracy. Some time in 2014, he accurately prophesied the expiry date for Ebola in Nigeria and it happened just as he had said.

In 2013, he prophesied that former president Goodluck Jonathan was going to win elections in 2015 and much later in 2014, he prophesied that the hand of God had left the former president and that there was no need for him to re-contest.

Later on in 2014, at a press conference attended by media giants like Sun Newspaper, The Guradian, Nation, Vanguard, Daily Independent, ThisDay Newspapers, etc., he openly declared that former president Goodluck Jonathan will lose the election and that General Muhammad Buhari was set to win big. It turned out just as he had said. In 2014, the man of God, became the only prophet on earth to accurately describe the unfortunate incident of Air Asia flight 8501, which went missing with 162 passengers on board, describing even the colors of the airline and how the colors were painted on the body of the plane, shortly before it happened.

He also prophesied specifically about fire outbreaks in major markets in 2015, and to the glory of God, much of it was averted, but some surely made headline news.

Mid last year- 2015, the fiery Prophet of God, Dr. Chris Okafor prophesied that a sexually transmitted disease deadlier than HIV has been released from the kingdom of darkness to destroy humans, and that it was only a matter of time before it surfaced.

On December the 31st 2015, during his annual cross over service at the headquarters of his Liberation City Church, the man of God again reiterated that a sexually transmitted disease, one deadlier than HIV has been released to cripple the human race in ways that will make HIV look like a child’s play. In January of 2016, the news of the havoc wreaked by Zika virus on the global stage quickly gained momentum. Weeks later, the United Nations declared zika a global emergency. The man of God was then asked if he also saw the Zika Virus coming and his response was “That’s the disease that God showed me. Everyone was confused because Zika virus had never been reported to be a sexually transmitted disease. But he insisted. Barely 48 hours after his rather confusing insistence, the news broke that Zika Virus has now metamorphosed into a deadly sexually transmitted disease.

For a list of other 2016 prophecies from the man of God, please see below:

PROPHESIES FOR 2016 by Dr. Chris Okafor (Dec. 31, 2015)
1. A more deadly sexually transmitted disease worse than HIV AIDS has been released from the kingdom of darkness. We need to be very prayerful and careful.
2. I see more Disasters taking place this year. But God will preserve His children.
3. America and Europe must pray fervently in this year.
I see the rise of religious fundamentalism in Europe, and serious crisis with the US elections. If care is not taken, there may not be an election in America. I see Obama suddenly changing his mind to run for 3rd term, sparking off serious crisis. They must pray to avert all these.
4. Nigeria must pray for a former military head of state. Seems like the end of the road.
5. I see a calendar representing the entertainment industry- some prominent people have been marked with the circles on the calendar for death. We seriously need to pray for the entertainment industry.
6. I see Nigerian Football returning to Glory days.
7. I see Explosions in places that no one is expecting to see them, in Nigeria. We need to pray for the Southern part of Nigeria.
8. I see a former minister passing on this year and also a present minister going home.
9. We need to pray for Rivers and Akwa-Ibom States- that God should avert any crisis arising from election Re-runs that may eventually happen in those states. I see terrible bloodshed. But if we pray, the opposite will be the case.
10. Anyone who wants to retain political power this year must seek the face of God.
11. We need to pray for Kogi State. I see someonesworn in and later eliminated prematurely. Serious intervention needed.
12. Lots of families will experience generational blessings for the first time this year.
13. I see a country in Europe having to deal with a major crisis resulting from a fatal train crash with heavy casualties.
14. Lots and lots of barren women will rejoice this year; because God has released unto them fruitfulness beyond measure.
15. Our men in uniform, especially the Police Force and the Nigerian Military must embark on serious prayers… there will be some serious shaking this year, in those two divisions.
16. Terror attack will increase in Nigeria but solution will arise between the 7th and 8thmonth of this year- 2016.

Mbaka: Priest, Politician Or Renegade? - Reuben Abati Writes

By     No comments:

Catholic priests in Nigeria have always captured the public imagination, some of them have served in government positions, some were prominent in the fight and struggle for democracy, some of them have proved their mettle as poets, teachers, musicians, social critics, and public affairs commentators, but Rev. Fr. Ejike Camillus Anthony Ebenezer Mbaka is a cut above the rest, not necessarily in terms of intellect or persona, but in terms of how he has been able to use the pulpit to acquire a rock star status.

It is therefore not surprising that everything about him is with a touch of the histrionic. This is exactly what happened when he was transferred, last week, from a parish where he had served for 20 years: from Christ the King Parish, GRA Enugu, to Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Umuchigbo, Njinike, Enugu. Characteristically, this radical priest and social activist turned what should be a routine administrative posting by his Bishop into a melodrama and an assault on the authority of the Church. You would think he had been sentenced to a jail term, the way he whined and wept and appealed to sympathy.
“I’m going to suffer because I have no place to put my head. I am going to suffer because I have no place to keep the Adoration Ministry’s assets…The Adoration Ministry is passing through suffering right now even though I’ve accepted that it is the will of God. Is the will of God through suffering? It is a mega suffering. The quantum of the assets of the Adoration Ministry is the only thing I am bothered about for now. Where am I going to keep them? I am going to stay in one small room that has only one small bed, one small table, little toilet and bathroom. So where am I going to keep all the Adoration assets? “ I couldn’t believe that this was a Catholic Priest.
His pain was so palpable. He even took a shot at the Church:
“I won’t fight anybody or even dream of battling anybody. If anybody allows the devil to use him, the same that advised you to make a mistake will laugh at you when you cry over the error.” This was a clear suggestion that the devil was using his boss, the Diocesan Bishop of Enugu, His Lordship Calistus Onaga, against him, Mbaka and the Adoration Ministry. Rev Fr. Mbaka further spoke with a touch of vanity about how he single-handedly built the Christ the King Parish, Enugu, with proceeds from the sale of his music albums. This priest is certainly special. He objects to suffering even if the Lord Jesus Christ, whose disciple he is, is the embodiment of sacrifice and suffering. He talks about assets in a capitalistic sense, and yet his reputation rests on his commitment to the poor. He finally says he accepts the “suffering”, sounding like a victim.
Mbaka’s melodrama was nothing short of an act of protest and incitement. It didn’t take long before a mob-like group trooped to the GRA, Enugu to help him move his things to the new church where it is said he will be an assistant priest. If his followers had laid their hands on the Diocesan Bishop, only God knows what they would have done to him for allegedly demoting their hero.

It also didn’t take long before the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC), South-East Caucus, Osita Okechukwu issued a statement alleging that Mbaka was being victimized because he is pro-Buhari and pro-APC.

Okechukwu‘s intervention was a needless busybody act. He only stopped short of asking the Diocesan Bishop to reverse himself or get labeled as an enemy of the government of the day. Nor did it take long before the Catholic Church also put its feet down, staing clearly that no priest is above the Church. Mbaka definitely needed that reality check. But he had succeeded in politicizing his transfer and dragging the Catholic Church into mainstream, partisan politics with the Church holding the short end of the stick.

It is perhaps for this reason that the Catholic Bishop of Abuja Metropolitan See, Cardinal John Onaiyekan once asked that Rev. Fr. Mbaka should be sanctioned. He actually accused him of talking “rubbish” when he openly condemned President Goodluck Jonathan and insisted that the electorate should vote for Muhammadu Buhari, then Presidential candidate of the APC, who according to him, was destined to win the 2015 Presidential election.
“I do not believe in my mind that the way things are in Nigeria, any Catholic priest has the mandate to decide which of the political contestants should be voted for… I don’t believe a priest should be doing that...If he was in my archdiocese, I will have sanctioned him long ago for the kind of utterances he makes.” Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama. President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), also similarly disowned him. Even with those protestations, Mbaka remained untouchable. He is on record as having declared in a secessionist mood, for example, that the sovereignty of Nigeria is not sacrosanct. “If we must be one Nigeria, let it be one Nigeria, but if it can’t be one Nigeria, let us divide…let us tell ourselves the truth.”
He has also since the 2015 elections, made a high profile visit to the Presidential Villa to see President Buhari. He was actually shown arriving in a private jet, waving to the crowd as if he was on a Papal visit to the seat of power! How did one priest, out of over 30 million Nigerian Catholics, become so powerful and untouchable?

Rev Fr. Mbaka’s seeming invincibility lies in his significance and relevance. His Ministry is a loud comment on the relationship between the Church and the congregation. Mbaka is the founder and Spiritual Director of a Ministry within the Catholic Church known as Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria (AMEN). Gifted, creative and clever; he is without any doubt a liberation theologian.

He runs a prophetic church, a church that believes strongly in the power of the Eucharist, and which in every sense is a church of the poor. His source of inspiration must be those liberation theologians and other radical priests who have proven that for the church to be relevant, it must be relevant to the interests, concerns and expectations of the congregation, particularly the underprivileged poor.

More than any other catholic priest in Nigeria, Mbaka has taken the Catholic Church beyond the confines of liberal conservatism to the ordinary man in the market place. He speaks the poor man’s language, he appeals to their imagination. He is the bridge between the Pentecostal churches and the Catholic Church in Nigeria.

He has mastered the tricks, the rhetoric, the antics and the persona of the former, and he applies this with a touch of sassiness that is original. He urges members of his ministry to “Pray Until Something Happens” (PUSH). In an overtly religious and superstitious country like Nigeria, there is never a shortage of persons who are ready to push until the impossible happens.

He organizes vigils titled “E no dey again”. That is precisely what the people want to hear. They want to hear that problems, disease, unemployment- “e no dey again!”. Mbaka also has a Foundation, the Multi-Life Savers Foundation. Note the emphasis on the saving of lives! He pays hospital bills, he gives out cars, he builds houses for people, he pays school fees, he sponsors events.

He sings. He dances. He is not your typical Catholic priest. He is rich. He talks about assets. Other priests go to him for financial assistance. He is an all-round entrepreneur in church garments. His Ministry performs miracles, signs and wonders. He makes the lame walk, he opens the eyes of the blind, he cures diseases; he spreads wealth and opportunities. He creates jobs. He provides hope. With all this, Fr. Mbaka is far ahead of his bosses within the Catholic hierarchy. Persons of other faiths and Christian denominations troop to his Ministry to seek spiritual counseling. Politicians seek his endorsement.

He controls the mind of multitudes. The Catholic Church is probably in need of reinvention, and the seeds of that process may well lie in the example and eclecticism of Mbaka and his likes in other parts of the Catholic world.

The plain truth is that the average church-goer today is looking for something different which the orthodox churches and their mode of worship do not offer. The poor who make up the congregation are as impatient as the politicians who have made them poor. They want immediate salvation, practical solutions to their problems; they want their blessings here and now, not in a world to come. Mbaka and the Pentecostal pastors understand this and so they bring the church closer to the people’s needs. But there is a flipside and it is hubris.

Hubris is risky and pernicious. It is what makes Fr. Mbaka appear so contradictory. It is what has distanced him from his original vows as a priest, making him talk of cash and assets as if he were an investor on Broad Street. It is what makes him complain of suffering and see his transfer as a punishment, rather than as an opportunity for further evangelism of The Word. He must have started out as a humble priest, but today, he has mastered the use of the media for self-projection and he is not contented with being a priest, he is now enjoying the life of a celebrity, hugging the limelight, seeking personal glory.

He runs a ministry of miracles, of wonders and signs and he sees visions of possible assassinations, either of himself or the politicians that he supports. No one should be surprised if this Pentecostal Catholic priest goes about with bodyguards. He shares this hubris with many other religious figures who seek to share power with politicians and co-govern Nigeria. They see visions about everything: from elections to diseases and foreign exchange rates. They have created a New Order under which they command the electorate, political parties and governments.

It is this hubris that has blinded Fr. Mbaka to the fact that the souls to be won for Christ are not only in GRA, Enugu, but in all places as well. His transfer to a smaller parish should remind him of the essence of his priestly vows: humility, simplicity, obedience, sacrifice, as well as commitment to the good of the church rather than individual heroism, values which can truly make him a priest in the Order of Melchizedek. Let him therefore, suffer if he must, and let his suffering be a blessing upon the poor and the Church, and if he as much as whimpers again, let him be posted post-haste to Sambisa forest, where the poor are in urgent need of miracles.

Boko Haram: Military still poorly funded - Service Chiefs

Boko Haram: Military still poorly funded - Service Chiefs

Nigeria’s military service chiefs, on Thursday, opened up on the challenges the military is facing in crushing insurgency in the North East zone of the country.
In a frank interaction with the Senate on the progress the Nigeria Armed Forces have made in the fight against Boko Haram terrorists in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, the service chiefs lamented that the military was still being poorly funded.
They said that the non-release of their security votes by the Presidency contributed to the poor performance of their men in the recent Boko Haram incursions where several people were killed in the North East zone.
The service chiefs led by led by General Abayomi Olonishakin, the Chief of Defence Staff, told the Senate that the fund allocated to the military for North East operations in the 2015 supplementary budget were yet to be released by the Federal Ministry of Finance.
