Ozubulu Catholic Church Killing: 3 High-Profile Suspects In Police Custody

The Police now have in their custody three suspects linked to last Sunday’s massacre at St Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu, Anambra State.

The suspects are said to be very wealthy but with no identifiable means of income.

Police spokesman, Moshood Jimoh, who confirmed the arrest however declined to reveal the identities of the suspects.

He spoke as the Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Dr. Hilary Okeke said the Church has forgiven the brains behind the attack.

Okeke, receiving a presidential delegation during a sympathy visit in Nnewi, however said the forgiveness does not in any way preclude government from fishing out the perpetrators and bringing them to book.

Jimoh also said the Police will not dignify any suspect with the term high profile, pointing out that anyone who violates the law of the land is liable to be arrested and charged accordingly.

“The arrested suspects have no identifiable means of income and they completely have no explanation as to their means of livelihood,” Jimoh told The Nation in Abuja.

“No doubt, when people do things relating to the offence of drug-running, they do not have a recognized means of livelihood.

“I would not want to say that they are ‘big men’ because anybody can claim to be big but once you commit crime, even if people in the society say you are a big man, it is the duty of the police to hold you and take you before the law. The process is not a respecter of anyone’s social standing.

“They are leading us further in our investigation into the crime. What happened was a vicious and condemnable act in a place of worship. It is criminal and reprehensible to go and attack worshippers and kill people, no matter what issue prompted any feud.

“All the perpetrators of such crimes would definitely be arrested and prosecuted. I want to assure Nigerians that whether they are in Nigeria or any other country, the Nigeria police and Interpol will get them anywhere they are.

“We will get anybody who had a hand in committing this offence; anyone who participated in any way and anyone who gives custody to the perpetrator or hides him has flouted the law. Such a person would be culpable.

“The process of the law would be firmly followed without compromise towards ensuring that we bring the criminals behind the Ozubulu incident to justice.”

And welcoming the Presidential team led by Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige in Nnewi yesterday, Bishop Okeke hailed the federal government for responding promptly to the Ozubulu incident.

He said that the federal government had by the gesture, shown that it had the interest of all sections of the country at heart in spite of differences in religion, creed and political affiliations.

He said that the incident claimed the lives of 13 people, while 26 others sustained various degrees of injury.

The bishop said that the church had set up a trust fund to assist the victims, adding that government was free to add its own contribution.

Ngige, a former governor of the state said that the delegation was in the state to condole with the people and government of Anambra.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari was much concerned about the incident and that the government would bring the perpetrators to book.

He pledged that government “will do everything to track the perpetrators,” and pledged its commitment to the safety of Nigerians every where they reside.

Others on the entourage were Health Minister Prof Isaac Adewole; Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of State for Education Anthony Anwukah; and Minister of State for Environment Ibrahim Jibrin.

The delegation visited St Philips Catholic, the scene of the incident, in Ozubulu.

They were scheduled to deliver to Governor Willier Obiano a letter of condolence from Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

Osinbajo, in the letter, commiserated with the families and friends of the victims, as well as the Ozubulu community for the loss and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

He condemned in very strong terms the atrocious and dastardly act which he said has brought sorrow to many innocent families.

“Such barbaric act constitutes an affront to our common humanity and it challenges, but will not overwhelm our collective resolve to rid our communities of all forms of violent crimes and criminality,” he said.

Osinbajo said President Buhari’s administration remains committed to deploying all available resources towards ensuring adequate security of lives and property in Anambra State and across the entire country.

He also informed that he had instructed law enforcement agencies to bring perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice without any delay.

Unknown gunmen had on Aug. 6 invaded the church during morning Mass and opened fire on worshippers.

I Didn’t Know Aloysius Ikegwuonu(BISHOP) Until He Returned From South Africa - Monarch Confesses

The traditional ruler of Ozubulu community in Ekwusigo council area of Anambra State, Fidelis Nnamdi Oruche and Mrs. Carol Ikegwuonu , step-mother of Aloysius Ikegwuonu, popularly known as Bishop, talk about the Anambra Catholic church massacre with CHIDIEBUBE OKEOMA and TONY OKAFOR

Can we know you sir?

I am HRH Fidelis Nnamdi Oruche, the traditional ruler of Ozubulu community in the Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Who is Aloysius Ikegwuonu otherwise called Bishop to you?

I didn’t know Aloysius Ikegwuonu until he returned from South Africa as a rich person. The truth is that everybody in Ozubulu is my subject. So, I will say that Chief Aloysius Ikegwuonu is my brother. He is a well-known philanthropist in this town and beyond. He had started helping the downtrodden, the less privileged and paying hospital bills of people before I met him. He had also started building projects like churches before we met. In all honesty, I will say that he is a very good person. He is not a bad man at all. He has a good heart and he is always ready to help people.

Do you know what he does for a living?

How can I know what he does when he is based abroad? He does not live in Ozobulu. He told us that he does some business abroad. He is not the only person from Ozubulu who lives abroad. We have many sons and children of the community who live overseas especially in South Africa.

What can you say about the killings in the Catholic Church which report noted that he built for the community?

I was not in the church when the incident occurred. Somebody called me on the phone to tell me about it. St Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu, where the incident occurred, is a bit far from the palace. When the person called on the phone, the background was very noisy and I presumed that all was not well.

I was not feeling well on that day so I had to send somebody to the church. The report I got was devastating. The massacre took place around 6am. I was told that a tragedy had occurred in our community. I was told that gunmen invaded the church and opened fire on people who had left their various houses to worship God. I was told that lifeless bodies littered everywhere. I was saddened by the report because those who died were all my subjects, my brothers and sisters. I quickly called my council head and informed him of the horrifying development. The governor, who is the chief security officer of the state, together with security officers, arrived in the place quickly. Who has ever seen such a crime in the house of God before? Who has seen or heard that some invaded a worship place and didn’t say anything and only opened fire on people who didn’t do them any harm? The community is in mourning. Our land has been desecrated by the perpetrators of this crime and they will not go scot-free. We will assist the security agencies and the government, both at the federal and state levels to make sure that justice is served.

What could have led to such killings?

I don’t know of any drug deal as being reported. But I know that about three years age, Ozubulu Development Union in South Africa, was having serious leadership tussle. Our children who are living there were having a disagreement over who becomes the chairman of the union. They didn’t agree and couldn’t resolve the issue among themselves. Mind you that we have Ozubulu Development Union all over the world. The union is for peace and development of our community. So, when they couldn’t resolve the issue among themselves, all of them, numbering hundreds returned to the country from South Africa. The issue was brought before the President General of Ozubulu Development Union, Chief Nobert Anigbogu. Anigbogu tried his best but couldn’t solve the contentious issue. The factions insisted that the matter must be brought before me as the traditional ruler of the community.

Before then, some people disagreed that they would take a peace covenant in any shrine. The day the matter was scheduled to be heard in my palace, the crowd was overwhelming. I cannot recall the number, but we took minutes of the meeting including names of the attendees.

The meeting was a heated one but it wasn’t anything except a disagreement between brothers over who occupies the position of Ozubulu Development Union in South Africa. After ensuring peace, we invited the bishop of the Catholic Church diocese and a reverend father who came and prayed for us. The Blessed Sacrament was used as a covenant oath for everybody. The crowd was over two thousand people. We admonished them to be peaceful and live in harmony.

Have there been similar killings in Ozubulu community?

Yes, it has happened before and that also was very saddening and mysterious. Up till today, we are desperately waiting for the killers of those four young men to be nabbed. This incident I am telling you happened around 2007. Four of our security men were killed in a very agonising and painful manner by unknown people. Their body parts were not complete as we buried them. Their tongues, eyes and even private parts were taken away.

They were dragged into a bush where they killed them. It was painful. My brother was among the 2007 victims. The government and security agencies are aware of the issue. Their killers disguised by wearing camouflages. The victims were blindfolded. The palm wine tapper who saw them told us. We are still asking questions to know why they were killed and where their organs were taken to.

Do you think the Catholic Church killings have any link with insurgency?

I don’t think so because we have been living peacefully and harmoniously with other ethnic groups residing in the community.

There is no crisis between us and them. Even our relationship with the Hausas is cordial and peaceful. We do not have any reason to suspect that they were the ones who attacked and killed our people during the Sunday worship session at St Phillip’s Catholic Church. Many of our people live in other parts like others live in our community too. We have no reason to accuse anybody. Other ethnic groups who live among us are peace-loving. They do not disturb us and we give them the best support and protection.

What is the community doing to ensure the arrest of the fleeing killers?

Such a crime, such massacre in our community is not what we will fold our hands and watch. We have started finding solution to it. Our community has a rich culture and tradition. We have traditional ways of unmasking such a crime. We will explore all avenues to make sure that the perpetrators do not go unpunished. We have started the traditional and spiritual approach towards finding a solution to it. It includes all approaches that are in line with the culture of our people. We are also calling on the government, the press and everybody to support us because we want to get to the root cause of this crime. We are applying our old and sacred culture in this circumstance. We are confident that our tradition will unmask the perpetrators and bring them to justice. This is not a crime that we will allow to die a natural death. Our community is in the news for the wrong reasons and we are not happy about it.

Has the community begun mourning and purification processes?

Yes, we have started already. Like I told you earlier, everyone who got killed or injured in the deadly attack was from this town. So, you should know that the community is mourning already. Every one of us was directly affected. There are wailings in our land. We have already invited the bishop of the diocese who came to pray to rededicate our land to God.

We are working with the government to approve a day for us to mourn the victims of the attack.

Do you think the attack was fallout of a drug business gone awry?

I don’t know what you are talking about. People are free to say or alleged whatever they want. But the truth of the matter is that our people are not known for dealing in drugs. We are known for buying and selling of cloths. Go to Onitsha main market and you will understand what I am talking about. Dealing in cloths is our identity and not drugs. But I cannot speak for anybody. We are very industrious people.

I don’t know who the attackers are. I don’t know about the Mbaise connection in this. I have told you that the only altercation that happened was about the leadership problem among the community indigenes in South Africa which we resolved.

I initially told you that it was the president general that handled it for the first time and later, it was brought to my palace where it was solved amicably. Let me put on record that our community is pained by this development and we are insisting that the persons who desecrated our land the church of God must be caught and punished. I told you that the spiritual solutions to the development have begun. We are bringing back our old culture into the spiritual inquiry. We are going to approach the issue using the Igbo spiritual method of seeking solutions to their problems.

I’m lucky to be alive — Bishop’s step-mother

Tell us about yourself.

I am the stepmother of Aloysius Ikegwuonu, popularly known as Bishop.

What can you say about the killings in the Anambra Catholic church?

We were in the church early in the morning of August 6 and while the service was in progress, a gun-wielding man arrived the entrance door and opened fire on the worshipers. He started shooting sporadically at a close range. We ran to escape the bullets flying around and in the process, one of the hit me. That was when I lost consciousness and was revived in the hospital. The bullet hit me in the stomach but I am getting better. I am waiting for the doctors to discharge me. I want to go home.

How many people fired shots into the church?

I only saw one person and he was the one who stood at the door and opened fire on us. He didn’t say anything. I cannot really say if he wore a camouflage. I was only bothered about my escape at the time. I thank God that I am alive. The experience was a terrible one. Though the wound is giving me pain, I am better now and I want to go home.

Do you think bishop who is your stepson is quarrelling with anybody?

I don’t know and I wouldn’t say what I don’t know. All I know is that while the service was ongoing, a man entered, stood at the exit door and opened fire on us. People ran, some survived and others died. I am among the lucky ones hit by bullets but survived.

DSS Invites Arewa Youths Who Issued Igbo Quit Notice For Questioning

THE Minister of Interior, Lt-Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd), on Friday hinted that leaders of the Northern youth groups that were behind the eviction notice given to Igbos in the North have been invited for questioning by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Dambazau who did not release further details about the invitation accused the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, of violating the bail conditions granted him by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

He said at a news conference in Abuja that it is left for the court to determine what steps to take on the IPOB leader and to what extent he violated the conditions when his trial resumes.

He said the Federal Government has no immediate plan to re-arrest Kanu.

The minister said: “The issue is that yes Nnamdi Kanu violated bail conditions but it is not time yet for him to go back to the court for trial. We have this assumption but I think it is left for the court that gave those conditions to determine whether those conditions were violated or not.

“If those conditions were violated, the court knows what to do. We cannot assume that those conditions are being violated. Yes the public knows those conditions were given but the determination of the extent of violation will be left for the court.

“It is not like the police will go after Kanu to arrest him on the grounds that he violated the bail conditions. Kanu will have a day in court and the court will determine his fate because it is the court that gave those conditions.”

Nnamdi Kanu Has Violated Bail Conditions –FG

The Minister of Interior, Lt-Gen Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (retd), has accused the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, of violating the bail conditions given him by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Dambazau, who made the allegation during a press conference held in his office in Abuja yesterday, however noted that it is left for the Court to determine what becomes of his action and to what extent he violated the conditions when his trial resumes.

Assuring that police arresting Kanu is totally out of consideration, the Minister said: “the other issue is that Nnamdi Kanu violates bail conditions but it is not time yet for him to go back to the court on trial. We have this assumption but I think it is left for the court that gave those conditions to determine whether those conditions were violated or not.

“If those conditions were violated, the court knows what to do. We cannot assume that those conditions are being violated. Yes, the public knows those conditions given but the determination of the extent of violation will be left for the court.

“It is not like the police will go after Kanu to arrest him on the grounds that he violated the bail conditions. Kanu will have a day in court and the court will determine his fate because it is the court that gave those conditions.” He equally spoke on why the Federal Government and the law enforcement agencies have not arrested leaders of the Coalition of Northern Youth Groups behind the quit order given to Igbo in the northern part of the country, explaining that they have been invited by the Department of State Services (DSS) for questioning.

According to him; “the group that called themselves coalition of Arewa Associations that held a press conference in Kaduna where they gave October 1 ultimatum to the Igbo to quit the north as a response to what they termed as issue of separatist agenda of IPOB and claim that there are lots of excitements from the Igbo against northerners, of course, they later claimed that the media quoted them out of context. I am very much aware that the DSS invited all of them, held a meeting with them to which they made a statement to the effect that what was reported in the media was not what they said.

“They further wrote to the Acting President indicating that they did not make inciting statement as to the issue of violence or forceful ejection of the Igbo in the north. However, it was on the basis of that the northern elders called them to also reaffirm from them that what was reported is not exactly what they meant.

“Secondly, it is something that the Kaduna State government is handling since that is where it happened. I want to think that it was on that basis that the arrest was not made. Again, there has been several efforts to dialogue between the northern youths and the Igbo youths. Several of such meetings have been held including the reported one a week ago but my understanding is that these various groups are trying to reach an understanding.

“More importantly, government has given assurance when the Acting President met with leadership from various parts of the country that nothing is going to happen to any person. Government has assured that everybody should stay and continue normal businesses.”

Ferrari Threatens To Take Legal Actions Against 360 Modena Customized Limo Owner

Ferrari can be pretty anal when it comes to modifying its cars or even using its badges on a vehicle other than its own. Now the Italian supercar-maker is threatening to take legal actions against the British owner of the world’s fastest limousine, a modified 360 Modena that can go up a top speed of 166mph – 267 km/h. According to reports, Dan Cawley, 36, of Cheadle, Manchester, has 14 days to remove all prancing horse badges, Ferrari names and “360 Modena” symbols from the 6m (20ft) supercar-limo.

“What kind of precedent does it set when you can’t do what you like with your own property?” asked Mr Cawley. Ferrari’s lawyers support that since Mr Cawley cut the 360 Modena in half and inserted a 3m (9.5ft) section of hand-built carbon fibre, the car is no longer a Ferrari, so he has to remove the badges and logos or else he’ll face legal action for infringing the Ferrari trademark.

Messianic Jews To Igbos' - You Are Not ‘Real’ Jews

Who is a Jew? According to a Jewish messianic group from America, you can find out for only $300 with a private DNA test.

And according to this test, the Jewish genetic family does not include Igbo people of Nigeria, a tribe of 30 million who have claimed a connection to Judaism for hundreds of years.

In a move that has garnered condemnation and anger from Nigerian Jews and international scholars, Jewish Voice Ministries, a messianic group from Arizona, announced this week that the Igbo are not “genetically” Jewish based on their private DNA tests.

Jewish Voice Ministries said they traveled to Nigeria to investigate claims that the Igbo people are descendants of ancient Israelites. Some Igbo believe that the term “Igbo” is a bastardized version of the word “Hebrew” and point to many cultural similarities between Igbo traditions and Judaism.

“The purpose of the tests was to provide them with testing and the pursuit of truth in terms of historical identity,” said a spokesman for Jewish Voice Ministries. “The DNA did not support their claim to be an ancient people of Israel, but we still consider them our brothers through common faith in the Messiah Yeshua.”

Remy Ilona, a Nigerian lawyer and professor, strongly denounced the test. Ilona is Igbo and a member of the approximately 10,000 Igbos who follow what he calls “rabbinical Judaism.” Ilona, a Times of Israel blogger, recently graduated from Florida International University with a Master’s in Religious Studies and will be an adjunct professor there in the fall.

“There is no test that can prove Jewishness,” said Ilona. “The culture has to point in that direction, and maybe a test can confirm what the culture is already saying.”

“The Igbos that are connecting to Judaism have no connection to these DNA tests and we oppose this,” he added.

Ilona said he understands why some Igbos agreed to get tested. “Africa is an area of the world that everyone tends to look down on,” he said. “Even though my Israelite culture is strong, because we’re Africans we are viewed with skepticism. I wanted that [question] to be covered so if you talk about culture, we will provide proof that our culture is Jewish.”

But Ilona was furious about the way the test was conducted. “The Jewish Voice came in and gave people the impression it’s a Jewish organization,” he said.

Ilona added that he views the Jewish Voice Ministry’s attempt to connect with the Redeemed Israel Community of Nigeria as thinly veiled proselytizing. He also faulted the organization’s testing methodology for being faulty and incomplete. He said the sample test group was too small given the vast population of Igbo, and in parts of Nigeria that are not majority Igbo. The Jewish Voices Ministry spokesman refused to comment on the organization’s testing methodology or other issues.

“I’d like to do a DNA test myself of those people [from Jewish Voice Ministries] who are coming to Nigeria,” to determine if they’re really Jewish, said Ilona.

The organization offers a Jewish Family Finder DNA test on its website for $300 (23andme.com offers a DNA test, without the emphasis on Judaism, for $99 in the United States and $150 abroad).

The Jewish Voice Ministry also provides medical care and services to international communities as part of its social outreach. In March, the head of Jewish Voice, Jonathan Bernis, told the Forward that the organization will base their medical outreach to Nigeria on the results of the test.

“We go to areas with a Jewish population or people who are historically tied to the Jewish people to provide aid,” Bernis told The Forward. “The result of the DNA testing would determine what degree of service we provide going forward.”

‘I know my ancestors were at Mt. Sinai, but maybe some of the Igbos don’t have that information’
Despite his dismissal of the Jewish Voice’s test, Ilona still believes that DNA tests can hold important information, but they should be done on a personal basis for people who are interested in learning more about their history, not by an outside group with a vested agenda. Ilona did a private DNA test himself a few months ago and found that he has Western Semitic roots which traced to the Red Sea region, which he believes proves his genetic ties to Judaism.

“I know my ancestors were at Mount Sinai, but maybe some of the Igbos don’t have that information,” he said.

Professor Tudor Parfitt, a world-renowned scholar who was one of the first people to utilize DNA testing to hypothesize about Jewish migration into Africa, called the Jewish Voice Ministry’s test “irresponsible.”

Parfitt, the head of Jewish Studies at Florida International University, where Ilona studies, gained recognition for his work in determining, via DNA, that the Lemba tribe in Zimbabwe and South Africa migrated from the Middle East. This was widely accepted as proof for the tribe’s oral tradition of being Jewish. He started his research into the subject on a trip to Israel in 1998 when he walked along the beach in Tel Aviv and asked Israelis who self-identified as kohanim, or part of the priestly class, to have their cheek swabbed so Parfitt could map their DNA. He identified the “Cohen modal haplotype,” a specific DNA marking unique to descendants of Aaron, was found in 52% of kohanim on the Tel Aviv promenade.

Afterwards, the Lemba tribe in Zimbabwe turned to Parfitt and asked to have their DNA tested in order to support their claims of Jewish identity. Parfitt agreed, and found that many members of the Lemba tribe, especially a sub-clan called Buba, shared the same genetic marker of the Cohen haplotype.

Parfitt is quick to point out that this DNA marker does not mean that the Lemba tribe is Jewish, but rather that the tribe likely migrated to Africa from the Middle East. Since this migration dovetails with the oral history of the tribe that they were descended from Israelites, it was widely interpreted that the Lemba are “genetically” Jewish.

“The DNA in that case seemed to justify the fact that there was a connection of some sort that solidified their faith and their Jewish or Semitic origin,” said Parfitt.

“Many people now believe their claim to be Jewish. The Igbo story now won’t have that same support,” he said.

Parfitt himself is Anglican Christian, though he jokes he’s “never had his own DNA tested for Judaism.”

Parfitt added that in the years since he publicized the Cohen haplotype, people have interpreted the information in many different and surprising ways. On a recent trip to Israel, Orthodox Jews who are trying to rebuild the Third Temple danced around him in ecstasy at the Western Wall, because the marking enables them to find “genetically pure” priests to serve in the Temple.

‘I didn’t stand up and say, hey, you’re not Jewish’
In 2003 and 2004, Parfitt was in Papua New Guinea with the Gogodala tribe, which also claimed to be one of the Lost Tribes. They also asked him to do genetic testing on their community, which Parfitt did.

“I had to go back and share that [the connection] was very circumspect,” said Parfitt. “I didn’t stand up and say, ‘hey, you’re not Jewish.’ I said, on the basis of DNA that was collected, there was no direct link between them and other Jews in other parts of the world. But I was not saying, ‘oh, stop it, you’re not Jewish.’”

Parfitt hopes that DNA can be used as part of a toolbox for understanding ancient migrations, a topic that fascinates him. He also pointed out that the DNA testing can be much more accurate for determining if “Jewish” tribes in Africa are connected to Spanish or Portuguese Jews who were expelled in 1492. Many ended up on the West Coast of Africa and disappeared, making it entirely possible that they assimilated into local culture while still maintaining Jewish traditions, Parfitt pointed out.

The key to accurately using DNA research is finding places where two groups have genetic similarities. So it’s much easier to trace a genetic line from 1492 than a migration through some parts of Africa thousands of years ago. “It’s difficult to get some kind of comparison, we don’t have lost tribes of Israel floating around the world,” he said.

Parfitt estimates that there are 14 to 15 million “shadow Jews,” people around the world who identify as Jewish but might not be accepted by the Jewish community as “traditional Jews.” In some cases, like the Lemba, there is a historical connection; other times, as in the case of the Abayudaya in Uganda or the Kehilat Kasuku in Kenya, it is a community that feels it is Jewish. “You don’t need historical justification to be part of a religious group,” he said.

“Can [DNA] say something about ancient migrations? Of course,” said Parfitt. “It’s the only tool we have to talk about ancient migration. But is it possible to reduce Judaism to DNA? The answer is no. It shouldn’t be used by anyone to decide who is Jewish and who is not.”

“The truth of the matter is it’s a racist discourse that has been around for a long time,” said Parfitt. “There are countless tribes that claim they come from the north-east or they’re Syrian or Roman, which is another way of saying ‘we don’t feel comfortable with being black and African.’ This was imposed upon them over many years by colonialism.”

“On the other hand, the idea that the Igbos are Jews is not a recent idea, it goes way back to the 18th century,” Parfitt added. “This is the lived experience on the part of the Igbo and many other Africans. Whether technically they’re connected with the ancient people of Israel, to my mind, is utterly and completely irrelevant. There is no bearing on the story. The idea of testing that hypothesis with DNA is not a good idea. It’s like testing myth, and you can’t test myth. Identity politics is connected to faith. It’s what you do with this identity, and they’re doing a lot.”

Guardian Poll Result : Nigerians Want Buhari To Resign On Moral Grounds,

In spite of his obvious infirmity, loyalists to Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari are prepared to campaign for his re-election in 2019. But they may be in for a resounding defeat if numbers from the latest Guardian Poll and rounds of protests in the nation’s capital, which entered the fourth day yesterday, are anything to go by.

There is a growing level of disenchantment with the Buhari government which came into power on the wings of promises to reposition the country by fighting corruption, improving security and remodelling the economy.

While appreciable progress has been recorded in the fight against insurgency in northeast Nigeria and corruption, the country’s economy is in the throes of a stubborn recession that has led to the death of many businesses while inflation continues to journey upwards.

More importantly, the president, ushered in in 2015 like a messiah of sorts, has spent more days outside of Nigeria in 2017, attending to an undisclosed ailment.

While the Nigerian Senate has stated that President Buhari has not violated any part of the constitution by staying outside Nigeria for more than 90 days, respondents to the Guardian Poll conducted on August 10, 2017, faulted the president on moral grounds.

Expressing their displeasure with the bad turn of events, 67% of 1933 respondents to poll conducted on the newspaper’s website, Twitter and Facebook pages said the ailing president should resign from his position owing to his prolonged absence.

A paltry 19% expressed support for the former military ruler while a further 11 % responded that it Buhari’s prerogative to either resign or continue to lead the country. Only a meagre three percent of the respondents felt unbothered by his absence.

The president left for London for a medical check up on May 7, leaving Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to lead the country.

The president, in a recent letter to Guinea’s President Alpha Conde, said he would only return to Nigeria “as soon as doctors give the go-ahead.”

He had earlier left Nigeria on January 19 for London to “undergo routine medical check-ups” during a short holiday. He only returned on March 10 after an extended period of medical treatment.

He tacitly acknowledged that he was very ill, telling his cabinet members that “I couldn’t recall being so sick since I was a young man.” He also said he had “blood transfusions, going to the laboratories and so on and so forth”.

His absence in Nigeria since May 7 has birthed rounds of protests and calls for him to resign. But his aides insisted that calls for his resignation were unnecessary distractions.

“It is very insensitive of anyone to begin to call on someone who is unwell to resume,” Lauretta Onochie, President Buhari’s personal assistant on social media said earlier in the week.

“Governance is going on, the role of the President is that of coordination; governance is a collective duty.

“When he was leaving, power was fully transferred to the Vice President and today, we have an Acting President,” she added, echoing earlier points made by the president’s spokespersons.

Validating that position, the spokesman for the Nigerian Senate said in a statement on Tuesday that the 74-year old Nigerian leader has not violated any constitutional provisions in spite of being out of the country for more than 90 days. He condemned protesters who have been gathering at the nation’s capital Abuja since Monday as paid “cheap publicity” seekers.

“The President has broken no law and therefore we do not see any justification for this diversion and noise making,” said Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.

“The sponsors are merely seeking cheap publicity at the expense of the peace of Nigeria.

“We, in the National Assembly, are satisfied that there is no vacuum. The Federal Government is working. Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is providing the required leadership. So, there is no reason for the protests.”

But one of the organisers of the Abuja protests disputed the allegations that the protests were sponsored. He said all his group wanted was for the president to obey Section of 144 of the Nigerian Constitution.

“What our group is saying is that the President needs to come back home and resume and work on the mandate that he promised the people,” Deji Adeyanju told Channels TV.

“We are saying that Section 144 is the only thing that can help to solve the problem,” he added.

Regardless of the vote of confidence given the president by the Senate, his polls numbers are not looking good. It will take more than the reliance on his loyal base for him to win a reelection in 2019 if at all he runs again.

Midwest Movement Threatens To Declare Bendel Republic

A group, Midwest Movement, has threatened to declare Bendel Republic if the Federal Government fails to address ethnic agitations.

It urged the government to revert to the 1960 and 1963 constitutions, to entrench true federalism.

Addressing reporters in Benin City, the group’s convener, Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki, said restructuring was the solution to the agitations.

Obaseki, who noted that the Nigerian federation was in dire straits, said the body was concerned about the country’s situation.

Eyes Of Lagos investigations show that, Reading the movement’s eight-point demand, he advocated structural deconstruction of the federation, saying the nation should be reconstructed through a re-federalisation process, using the 1963 Constitution as template.

Obaseki advised the Federal Government to broaden its consultation and engagement with stakeholders of ethnic nationalities, including the Midwest, to ensure restructuring.

Said he: “The uncertainty pervading the country is as a result of years of injustice, neglect and violation of terms agreed by the founding fathers at independence in 1960.

“We belong to the Midwest Region and we condemn attempts by ethnic groups trying to include it in their agitations. We will resist attempt by ethnic jingoists to annex, attach or conscript the Midwest territory as part of their territories.”

PDP Plotted Igbo Hate Song - APC Chairman, Oyegun

All Progressives Congress, APC, chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has accused the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party PDP of plotting the hate speeches, especially the now viral hate song in Hausa Language, inciting the rest of the North on a genocide against the Igbo.

Odigie who made the accusation in reaction to the audio recording making round that incites the North, especially the youths to engage in genocide against the Igbo people, described the song as “dangerous and despicable” and called on the security agencies to apprehend those behind the recording and other similar acts “no matter who they are.”

According to him: “the rising wave of hate speeches, negative religious and ethnic utterances and actions as is currently being experienced, is part of the fallouts of the 2015 presidential election.

“Anyone participating in an election knows that there could only be two outcomes, you win or you lose. When you lose, you prepare for the next election. What we have seen however is that since 2015, some politicians and political groups have carried on as if they wished the country itself to collapse just because they are no longer in power. This is tragic indeed”, he said in apparent reaction to the former ruling party, the PDP.

“Every ethnic based crises of whatever nature had started with hate speech. When people within the same country frame and define one another in the manner intended to set them up for violent attack, then they are setting themselves up for a major disaster”.

“The merchants of hate don’t know or just don’t care about the consequences of the fire they are stoking in the country. But they have the experiences of other countries to learn from. Rwanda remains a classic example on our continent. However, even as terrible as Rwanda was, it would be nothing compared to what could happen if a huge country like Nigeria is allowed to fall into the disaster of hate-driven conflict. This is why we must all rise, regardless of our political differences and condemn these ugly and shameful acts with one voice”.

“We cannot sit idle and watch a few disgruntled individuals destroy our democracy, and God forbids, the nation that we all fought hard to achieve and build.”

Nevertheless, the APC government, of which party, Oyegun chairs, has been accused by generality of Nigerians of scratching the surface of the very threatening issues confronting the country.

Part of the evident presented by these critics is the inability of the federal to make any move of arrest on the Arewa youths who had issued quit notice on the Igbo to vacate the northern territories before October 1st or risk the violence that would precipitated their refusal to leave.

This is despite the directive from both Acting President Yemi Osibanjo and Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai.

Robbery Suspect Buried Alive In Ebonyi By Mob (Photo)

Angry youths have reportedly buried alive a suspected armed robbers, Chukwudi Omaka, who along with his gang members allegedly robbed and killed a businessman.

The businessman, Idam Ogbonnia, was killed at Amaisri community in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Police yesterday paraded three of those who reportedly killed Ogbonnia.

A witness, who is a resident of the community, Emmanuel Udu, said Omaka was also among robbers who robbed a cold room known as Etuelughu, belonging to Oko Udu Monday and another businessman identified simply as David, selling provisions.

He said: “The handsome boy (Omaka) was beaten thoroughly. Despite that, he refused to name his members. He was later buried alive by Amasiri youths.”

It was learnt that after burying Omaka, youths planted a tree on the grave in accordance with the customs of the community against anyone who committed a crime. The tradition has been as old as the community.

Those paraded included Gideon Omaka, Chukwudi Omaka’s brother and Idam Nwabueze Amadi. Parading the suspects before journalists at the state Police Command Headquarters, Abakaliki, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Dr. Jude Madu, said the suspects lay an ambush for the team of Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and shot about three policemen.

He said the incident occurred last Friday and that some suspects, including Gideon Omaka, were arrested.

Madu said the state commissioner of police had declared war on criminals by deploying policemen to fish out criminals in the community.

Gideon (29), told journalists he was a former convict but did not know anything about the robbery for which his brother was killed. He said: “I was in my house when people attacked me and killed my brother, Chukwudi. I ran away.

They said my brother was one of those who robbed Idam Ogbonnia in my village.

My brother was the one who was buried alive when I ran away. The people later arrested me. “I just returned from prison that was why the people said I knew about the robbery that took place in my community for which my brother was accused, attacked and buried alive. I was released from prison March this year.”

Igbos Are Not Jews - DNA Result Reveals

The high expectations of members of the Redeemed Israel Community of Nazarene Association (RICON) on a possible ancestral link between Igbo and Jews have been dashed.

The international President of Jewish Voice Ministries, Rabbi Jonathan Bernis, announced that the result of saliva samples taken in Nnewi had shown that the Igbo were not Jews.

Members of the group had gathered at Uruagu-Nnewi to collect what would be the confirmation/ Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test result of Ndigbo’s claims that Igbo are descent of Israel got to the venue as early as 9.00am on Saturday for a result that was to reshape the relationship of Igbo and Israel.

Rabbi Bernis who read the report from a laboratory based in Houston, Texas, the United States of America (USA) said that the result of the samples taken from Nigeria randomly on some people in Igboland bear no semblance with the ones in the data base of the laboratory.

The Israeli in company of three of his compatriots said that none of the 124 specimen taken from Nigeria matched the samples in the Houston laboratory which has 17 years’ experience in DNA business.

He however said that the result does not rule out the claim of Igbo to Israeli descent as more research would still be made to authenticate the claims.

The President of RICON, Bishop Ignatius Orizu (JP) while commenting on the DNA result said that the result would not deter the organisation from continuing to research into the claimed descent of the Igbo from Israel.

He pointed out that the tradition, religion and culture of the Igbo long before the arrival of the missionaries have great semblance with that of the Israelis.

Bishop Orizu who said that there are many books in circulation that collaborated the claim of Igbo to Israeli decency however urged the congregation not to lose hope as science is always in the business of discovery and recovery.

He appealed to the Federal Government to recognise the Jews in Nigeria and proclaim Yaweh’s Feast of Passover, trumpets, atonements, tabernacles among others as public holidays as approved for Christians and Moslems during Christmas, New Year and Easter.
Saliva samples were collected from Igbo community for Y25, DNA test on February 6 and 7, 2017 at Nnewi, Anambra State.

Olusegun Obasanjo: Before I Die, Lagos Will Become Africa’s 3rd Largest Economy

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, highlighted some of the reasons why all Nigerian leaders after his administration were unable to increase power generation from where he left it 10 years ago.

He also said Lagos would become Africa’s third largest economy before in his lifetime, noting that the state government was already making it an economic hub.

Speaking in Lagos at the launch of a book, “Making Africa Work,” which he co-authored with Director of Brenthurst Foundation, Dr. Greg Mills; President of NEWSEUM, Dr. Jeffrey Herbst and Major General Dickie Davis (retd), Obasanjo said lack of good leadership, continuity in governance and financial constraints were responsible for the diminishing status of power generation in the country.

Obasanjo explained that his administration came up with an agenda called ‘NEEDS,’ which is National Economic Empowerment Strategy, to deal with power and other problems confronting the nation.

He said: “The idea is that we would have something that will lead us in every aspect of governance and we make federal, states and local governments buy into it.

“When we were planning it, we went round the country, sample people’s opinion and consult traditional leaders. The incoming administration after us was not left out in it and during my administration, we implemented the first phase of NEEDS and it was supposed to be continuous.

“But to my surprise, the administration that succeeded our tenure, which campaigned on the basis of continuity, failed us.

“When they assumed office, the first statement they made on energy was that in four years, they will generate 30,000 megawatts of electricity. At that time, the highest we generated was 4,000 megawatts.

“I was shocked, wondering how they will do it in four years. I quickly sent someone to educate him (then President) because, as at that time, we were in the process of generating 10,000 megawatts.

“It is regrettable that the administration that succeeded us did not even generate up to 3,750 megawatts that we were able to generate before we left.

“It even came down to 1,500 and the one we have in the pipeline, they stopped it. That was about 10 years ago and up till today, our power generation has not gone beyond where I left it 10 years ago.”

Obasanjo regretted that even when power had been privatised, there was still no money to improve it, saying: “As far as funding is concerned, there is funding out there but it can only come when environment is conducive.

Improved contributory pension to facilitate devt

Obasanjo explained how government could use contributing pension to facilitate development in the country, lamenting the fact that some people didn’t get their pension till they died.

He said; “I formed a committee and sent them to different parts of the world to gather experience. They came back and we enacted a law that there should be contributory pension.

‘’The public service didn’t want it because they didn’t want to make contributions but we were able to achieve 10 per cent compliance.

“Ten percent of Nigeria workers were captured in the contributing scheme and in a space of 12 years, that fund yielded up to $40,000, only 10 percent, one can imagine if 50 percent of our working population is captured.

“This is the kind of money that can be used for development. The same kind of money was used in Singapore to give everybody housing.”

He, however, said that the newly launched book detailed practical steps of how to make Africa work.

He said: “Africa is not poor, but poorly managed because if we decide to manage it properly, we would get out of the situation we find ourselves.

“I don’t talk about poverty in Africa because the international community is tired of hearing poverty. So our narration has to change. We need to talk about job creation and wealth generation.”

Lagos’ll become Africa’s 3rd largest economy

Obasanjo also said Lagos would be Africa’s third largest economy before he dies, adding that the necessary structures were already being put in place to achieve that.

“Even though people said I look like someone who is in the departure lounge, Lagos will become the third largest economy before I take my boarding pass,” he said.

Why North Fears Restructuring – Katsina State Governor

Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has disclosed that the North’s over dependence on what is coming from the centre is the source of fear by the region over the agitation of restructuring by the North.
“This over dependence on allocation from the centre must stop if we are to progress. We have the population, we have both human and material resources; but we must have the political will to do the right thing” he added.
Masari made the disclosure, yesterday, while launching the production of PVC Pipes by AMPRI GLOBAL Limited at their production sites in Kankia, Katsina State.
He noted that the only way out was through the promotion of medium and small scale businesses to provide revenue for both the state and local governments and generate employment for the youth to boost their economic status.

According to the governor the Kankia Metal Works was leased to the AMPRI GLOBAL Limited in order to put machineries provided at the site to proper use and ease the government wasteful spending in maintaining the facility even though it was not operating.
In a remark, the state commissioner of commerce, industry and tourism, Alhaji Abubakar Yusuf said with the commencement of production of PVC by the company it had fully completed its full package of production lines.
He assured the people of the state that the present administration was committed to the resuscitation of additional industries and establishment of new ones in the state through partnership with prospective investors.

My Charity Foundation Started In Ghana, I Have Never Been To Malaysia: Churchill Reveals

Dr Olakunle Churchill Oladunni is fast leaving his imprint on the sands of time with his varied businesses and act of philanthropy. His Big Church Group as well as Big church Foundation have seen him assisting various fire victims as well as the federal fire service. In this interview, he speaks on his business and charitable ventures.

• Why the decision to contribute to the Federal Fire Service?

It's my passion to contribute to charity. As a vital agency that saves lives with the risk involved, my foundation decided to mirror down to Federal Fire service by donating a Life Saving Ambulance as a way of supporting the survival of humanity. We also considered the prevention of the fire disaster in every sector which informed the decision of giving 1000 fire extinguishers, 1000 fire blankets as well as smoke detectors.  This is basically a standard for the foundation to give to charity from the 10% of all the company earnings.

 • You also visited the National Trauma Centre at the National Hospital where you donated quite a lot of materials to victims of fire accident, what informed this?

‎It's still in the spirit of saving lives to promote the fire awareness campaign, We considered it important to reach out  to the fire victims because of their unfortunate circumstance. In their situation they needed our support and encouragement so we had to visit them, pay some of their bills and give them gifts. Donating fire equipments is one part while supporting fire accident victims is another aspect which boils down to humanitarian gesture to give back to the society.

•What more plans do you have for the fire service knowing fully well that you broke the record of being the first man and head of a NGO that donated immensely to the service?

With this exercise, we look forward to giving out more fire preventive equipment lik‎e fire blankets, fire extinguishers and smoke dictators for our clients, homes, offices and even vehicles. We already have a partnership with Federal Fire Service and we intend to host Fire Awareness Seminar this year. ‎It will be a grand event that will attract specialists in Fire Fields to educate the public and individuals on how to tackle the emergencies. My Foundation hopes to sponsor a campaign media calling for well meaning Nigerians to support the Federal Fire service as well as the fire victims in the hospitals

• How do you feel seeing so much joy on the victims' faces?

Oh! I feel so touched and emotional that despite their pains from fire accident they feel excited. It truly gives me joy to put smiles on the faces of these victims whose situations are heartbreaking. ‎I thank God that our presence at the hospital brought so much joy to them and we pray God grant them speedy recovery. Big Church Foundation will always visit them from time to time to checkup on their health.

• How would you say your career has been so far?

My career has been GREAT. It’s been growth all the way and I’m thankful for every stage of it. I worked very hard, had a focus, in fact I started doing business very early in life - at age 22…but the expansion of my business is not just by my hard work; I thank God almighty for rewarding my hard work with his blessings and enlarging my territory over the years.

• Your business interest occurs in five basic areas -security, real estate, charity, agriculture, training and consultancy. How did this portfolio come into being?

ANS: I would like to first state that they didn’t all come alive at the same time, they came to exist one by one, or two by two. My company is a group of companies with 6 subsidiaries; ICT Security, Real Estate, Charity, Agriculture and Mining, Training and Consultancy as well as Entertainment. The first one to come into existence was the Real Estate Company that I recently renamed after my son; King Andrea Realtors LTD, after which we started the ICT security company due to my love for technology. I’ve always been a programmer and a technical person hence the need to let my passion play out in my work. Subsequently, the rest of the companies followed and it’s been great.

• Does your organization work alone or through partnerships?

At various stages we have had to work hand in hand with some other charity organization. We are mostly an independent foundation; however, where we see good partnership proposals or opportunities we sure do give it a shot.

• To What extent would you say you have contributed to society and humanitarian services? And approximately how much?

Hmmm… How much? I definitely cannot place a figure on that (even approximately) this is because charity has always been my thing even before my foundation came to being. Also, what we give isn’t only in monetary terms so that’ll be difficult to place, but all I can say is God has blessed me to bless people and I won't relent until my last breath and day on earth.

• There have been rumors about your charity organization being a fraud, what can you say about that?

Well, I can understand if some persons can’t believe that the work God is doing through us is even possible but it’s just the answer to my prayer. I have always prayed to God to give me that miracle that would sound like a lie, so if people find it hard to believe that we are legit and working independently then that means God is doing more enormous things through us than we even realize. However, we are REAL and LEGITIMATE and everyone should join the movement and become generous givers as much as they can.

• How do you get funding for your charitable works?

Fortunately, we run a group of companies that have 6 subsidiaries so we have a fixed habit of taking 10 percent from each and every one of the subsidiaries to put into charity. Therefore, one-tenth of revenues from the Real Estate, ICT, Agriculture, Consultancy and entertainment goes into charity on a monthly basis and that is the major funding for the foundation.

• Where did you start your charity organization? Malaysia?
Charity for me has been on since I was a lot younger, however we incorporated it into an organization in Ghana. I have never been to Malaysia all my life.

• Wow! Never been to Malaysia? There were rumors that you once lived there with your ex?

Oh Really? That’s definitely not me because I have never been to Malaysia, not even once. I met my ex in Ghana after she relocated from Malaysia

• What can you say about philanthropy?

Wow! There’s a whole lot to say about philanthropy because for me it has been a lifestyle and not a business, a job or something you do because you are told to. It is absolutely a selfless service to humanity, you get to always put others first, feel their pain and help them grow in their various fields. It has a lot to do with building others, raising them as much as you can, making them happy and overall making their lives brighter and better than you met them. I always tell people “Never let a day pass without you helping at least one person” and it doesn’t have to be through material things alone (though important) but other resources and emotional support could also go a long way because what some people get depressed for to the point of almost taking their own lives, could have felt better with just a little more love, care, smile, words of encouragement and emotional support from another person.

•  What has been your motivation to keep up with Charity?

God himself has been my utmost motivation. God made me understand the kingdom principles of giving at a very early stage of my life and that has kept me in check. God is the ultimate father of wealth so if you can get it from God, nothing stops you from first giving back to him the 10 percent he requires from us (and even more depending on how you are inspired). And since I believe that going the EXTRA mile brings about EXTRA results, I would say nothing also stops you from setting aside yet another 10percent to make humanity happy. From my life experiences I can boldly say that when you give bountifully, it equals insuring your life in God, and the moment your life is insured by the almighty there’s nothing that can work against your progress in life. I’ve lost count of God’s blessings over my life that I received through charity and I can neither thank him enough nor stop doing the things he has blessed me through.

• What advise would you give to young people who are still contemplating whether to be givers or not?

More blessed is the hand that gives than the hand that receives. When you give, God is sure to bless you even more… I’m saying this because I’ve seen the evidence in my life so I’m urging everyone to imbibe a giving culture and watch what happens within as short as one year in their lives. Also, when you give you don’t necessarily have to announce it to the world because God himself doesn’t go about telling the world what he has done for you, I understand that sometimes we have to let people know what we do just to encourage them to do the same and in turn make the world a better place. However, there’s a whole lot that we do and keep silent about. Finally, you need to recognize the anointing of God upon your life, some are born to be givers and some are motivators while others are called to minister and so on. Ask God to show you his purpose for your life and life would be a lot easier.

• Any upcoming projects from the Big Church Foundation we should be expecting?

Yes! We are actually working on empowering a thousand youths per state and the FCT, and that amounts to 36,000 youths in all states and 1,000 from the FCT, the flag off holds before the end of the year. We intend to empower them in the area of agriculture, and e-agriculture and ICT in partnership with Microsoft so everyone should anticipate.
