A Jamaican man has reportedly beheaded his wife in a fit of rage after suddenly finding out that his wife had been cheating on him and all their six kids are not his.
According to a local newspaper in Jamaica, the incident happened in St. Andrew where the man, who was not named, decided on a DNA test on his children and realised that none of them was his.
The woman, Karen Rainford, was said to have later confessed to her husband that she had been sleeping with other men, resulting in the children and begged him for forgiveness. Everything seemed to have been back to normal after that. But unknown to her, her husband was secretly scheming on how to make her pay for her deceit and betrayal. Days leading to the murder, he cut off his dreadlocks and told people close to him that he would kill his wife but no one took him serious.
A source said that what really angered the man was the fact that Rainford had often gone to his work place to mbarrass him for child support knowing that he was not the real father of the kids. This, coupled with the discovery, he was said to have beheaded her just like he had promised.

Improve Power Supply, Not Tariffs, Labour Union Tells Buhari

By     No comments:

The National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria on Sunday said the Federal Government must ensure steady power supply before increasing electricity tariffs.
A statement issued in Kaduna by the Secretary General of the Union, Issa Aremu, said the group support the planned picketing of electricity distribution companies by the organised labour.
“We hereby declare our total support for the planned picketing by labour and civil society allies of all offices of the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) nationwide, including Abuja, on Monday Feb. 8, to protest the unilateral and unlawful hike of electricity tariffs. “We commend Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership for this mass action for improved power supply instead of incessant non-service charges.”
Aremu advised President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently revisit the report of the 2014 National Conference and implement the holistic recommendations for the power sector.
He said that the Federal Government should not allow the increase in tariff “by the underperforming generating and distribution companies.”
“The point cannot be overstated; Power/Energy is so strategic to the industrialisation and the wellbeing of the people,’’ the former Vice President of the NLC said.
He also appealed to the federal government to urgently review the privatisation contracts with the electricity Generation Companies (GenCos) and DisCos.
Aremu said the firms should be given a two- year time-frame “to allow them stabilise and provide efficient power supply to Nigerians before they can contemplate any tariff increase. ”
The General Secretary further said that there should be more transparency in all future sales of the nation’s assets. “We reject the hike in electricity tariffs and hereby call on our members across the country and all well meaning Nigerians to come out and join NLC protest to drive home the fact that the unilateral and unlawful hike of electricity tariffs is unacceptable.“ Aremu said the textile union, instead, called for improvement in power supply.
“The point cannot be overstated. Between 30 per cent and 35 per cent of textile and garment manufacturing costs are energy related expenses. “ Without electrification, there can be no industrialisation. “
The promise and expectation that President Buhari will revive textile industry generally is not possible without electricity, ’’ the labour leader said. According to Aremu, it is time for the Buhari-led administration to critically review the power sector reform with a view to increasing public sector investment

Forget About Oil, The Gold In Ife Needs Exploration – Ooni Of Ife Talks On Shifting Away From Oil Market

By     No comments:
Adeyeye-Ogunwusi-Ooni-of-Ife-1

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, says Ile Ife will be the take-off point of the new Nigerian economy in a post oil and gas era, stressing the need for focus to shift from oil and gas to other solid minerals in Nigerian states.
In an exclusive interview during Channels Television’s programme, ‘View From The Top’, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, says Ile Ife will be the take-off point of the new Nigerian economy in a post oil and gas era, and expressed optimism that an exploration of the huge solid minerals in the state, especially gold, would give an unprecedented boost to the nation’s economy.
The influencial monarch who said that the exploration of gold in the country will shift it away from volatility of the crude oil market, stressed the need for focus to shift from oil and gas to other solid minerals in Nigerian states.
“All over the country solid minerals are everywhere. But we haven’t even exploited it. Indeed, we can survive without oil and gas. If we don’t have oil and gas, we can survive because the mysteries in this land are more than anywhere in the world.
There is a huge potential in Ife. There is no solid mineral we don’t have. We have gold, Timberlight Gemstone… We have very large scale deposit of all those materials and I like to practice what I preach,” the monarch told Modele Sarafa-Yusuf. The Oba added that he was already working with the State and Federal Governments to promote solid minerals, tourism and agriculture to keep the youths engaged and promote the local economy. He urged the leaders to lead by personal example, advocating the use of made in Nigeria goods.
“The beads that I am wearing, I went as far as Benin Kingdom to go an exploit the beads. People don’t wear it any longer but it is made in Nigeria and I am proud to say it. The gold in between it, I took it from Mokuru waters in Ife and it is one of the most purified gold in the world. It is a 23.9 karat gold, raw. We just decided to do surface mining.
We have it in Nigeria. We have it in Ife, Ilesa and in Niger State. All these things are just littered everywhere. But there is nobody to harness and put all those structures in place. We have focused too much on oil and gas.
So I am very proud to say today that what I am wearing is made in Nigeria hundred per cent. This throne, the shoe that I am wearing are made in Nigeria. It is that bad, the soap I use is made in Ile Ife. That is the only way Nigerian economy can grow. So we must lead by example,” the Ooni of Ife stressed.

Yoruba People Are Genetically Resistant To Lassa Fever, Nigerian Professor Claims

By     No comments:

A university lecturer, Prof. Christian Happi, has claimed that Yoruba people, by the make-up of their genes, are immune to Lassa virus that causes Lassa fever.
The researcher, who is Dean, College of Postgraduate Studies, Department of Biological Sciences, Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, said research was ongoing on why this is so, adding that few cases of Lassa fever recorded among Yoruba people are “imported.”
Speaking on the new breakthrough on the rampaging Lassa fever, Happi, who is Director, World Funded African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, ACEGID, while speaking in Ede, said Lassa fever virus originated from Nigeria about 1,060 years ago.
He further explained that the disease spread to other West African countries about 400 years ago, stressing that Yoruba have capacity to resist the virus more than any other ethnic group in country.
He added:-
“Using next generation sequencing approach, we have identified a signal of natural selection in human gene called LARGE in the Yoruba populations of the South-West of Nigeria that may be associated with protection to Lassa fever virus.
We have hypothesised the potential mechanisms of protection and believe that this could be the key to the future Lassa fever vaccine.” Meanwhile, a 28-year-old lady has died of Lassa fever in Ogun State. The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, said that the young lady was the first to have died of the disease in the state. Ipaye, who said this during a press conference held at Oke Mosan in Abeokuta on Thursday, said the victim had travelled to Ebonyi for a burial programme and returned to Ogun on January 15, and later started manifesting the symptoms of the viral disease.

Lamido Sanusi Criticises Buhari’s Naira Policy

By     No comments:
lamido sanusi-NL

Respected former head of Nigeria’s Central Bank, Lamido Sanusi has said the government should end its policy of trying to maintain the value of the currency, the naira. Mr Sanusi said the drawbacks of the policy “far outweigh its dubious benefits”, the Financial Times reports.
President Muhammadu Buhari had told the BBC last week that he was not convinced of the need to “murder” the naira.
However the falling oil price has put pressure on his currency policy. While the authorities are keeping the official naira rate at around 200 to the US dollar, the black market rate is closer to 300 and sometimes more than.
Because the Nigerian government relies on oil exports for vital foreign exchange, the declining price means there are fewer dollars in the country.
“The government does not have the reserves to keep the exchange rate at its official level in the market, ” Mr Sanusi said again while speaking with the Financial Times. The policy has “never worked” wherever it has been tried, he added.
