Panama Papers: Bukola Saraki Says He Won't Resign

By     No comments:
Embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki on friday said he would not yield to growing calls from Nigerians that he should step down amid growing corruption scandals.
Mr. Saraki said those calling for his resignation were being sponsored by politicians who had always opposed his leadership since he emerged Senate President last June, He added that his detractors were trying to circumvent the country’s judicial system.
Mr. Saraki was responding to a story published by PREMIUM TIMES earlier today, in which the Transition Monitoring Group lend its voice to a growing call for the Senate President’s ouster.
In a text message sent to our reporter by his Special Adviser on Media, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Mr. Saraki said he was not contemplating resignation.
“There’s a case in the Tribunal and a resultant appeal at the Court of Appeal,” the statement said. “The underlining philosophy of our legal system is that an accused person is presumed innocent until found guilty.”
“Those who are contemplating calls for resignation want to circumvent the judicial system. They are obviously being sponsored by some politicians.
“The Senate President is not contemplating any resignation. He will surely have his day in court.”

Since Mr. Saraki was arraigned by the Code of Conduct Tribunal and the PREMIUM TIMES expose about his secret offshore assets in tax havens, the calls for him to step down has continued to mount.
On Thursday, several activists and other Nigerians openly called on the Senate President to resign. They were joined today by the TMG.
PREMIUM TIMES had reported on Monday that Mr. Saraki failed to disclose four assets found to be in his wife’s name offshore, in violation of Nigeria’s code of conduct law.
That revelation came to light following the leak of a trove of internal data from the Panama-based offshore-provider, Mossack Fonseca, obtained by the German newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and shared by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) with PREMIUM TIMES and over 100 other media partners in 82 countries.
In his response to that publication, Mr. Saraki said the controversial assets belonged to the estate of his wife’s rich and famous family, and that the law did not mandate him to declare such a category of assets.
But PREMIUM TIMES later found that the assets neither belong to Toyin, his wife, nor to her family’s estate. They are clearly Mr. Saraki’s.
According to the new documents retrieved by PREMIUM TIMES from the massive Mossack Fonseca database, the assets in Toyin’s name are actually held in trust for Mr. Saraki, Nigeria’s third most powerful official.

Buhari Forced Me To Contest As Governor- El- Rufai

By     No comments:

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has revealed that he never considered himself ‘nice’ to rule the state.
El-Rufai also said he would have lost the election that brought him to power if not for the Card Reader introduced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).The governor disclosed this yesterday when he performed the closing ceremony of the 2-day Economic Summit for investors interested in doing business in the state.
El-Rufai said he was still wondering why people still refer to him as a nice governor, despite demolition of illegal structures by government.
“I want to pay tribute to President Muhammadu Buhari who ensured that I became the governor of Kaduna State. It was President Muhammadu Buhari that forced me to contest for the governorship race of Kaduna State in revenge for persuading him to run the presidential race.“If he had not asked me to run for the governorship, I wouldn’t have stood before you today as the governor of Kaduna State.
“It is the Buhari phenomenon that had swept away the PDP. Buhari is a man of integrity, a Nigerian leader whose name has not been found in the Panama documents.
“The president inherited 16 years of impunity, and it will take time to clean it up, so, all Nigerians need to be patient with him. And, with the quality of leaders we have in the country, Nigeria will take its rightful place in the comity of nations.
“I wonder why people still refer to me as a nice governor even when I demolished their houses. I am not a nice governor.”
“I thank the people of Kaduna State for voting for us. We did not pay kobo to get those votes, if it were in those days without the card reader, we would have lost the election.
“I promise you, we will keep working until we make this state a better place for you.”

I Feel Your Pains And I Will Not Disappoint You, Buhari Tells Nigerians

By     No comments:

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday told Nigerians that he was feeling their pains saying that mutterings about the new administration being a scam was far fetched, saying that the one-chance scammers have been driven out of town.

The president spoke at the Vanguard Personality Award ceremony in Lagos where he was jointly honoured with his predecessor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as Personality of the Year Award, 2015.

President Muhammadu Buhari
Buhari’s call for increased confidence in his administration came as Jonathan praised all Nigerians for contributing to the successes of the elections that characterised his time in office.

Yesterday’s award ceremony which also witnessed awards of Governor of the Year to Governors Adams Oshiomhole of Edo, Kashim Shettima of Borno, Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun and Ibrahim Damkwambo, Gombe saw a melting of the political and cultural differences that shape the country. Various cultural displays intermingled within and outside the Ekpo Hall of Eko Hotel and Suites that was the venue of the award ceremony.

Also honoured yesterday with life time achievement awards were former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme, Mrs. Nike Akande, chairman of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCCI, Otunba Sobunmi Balogun and Senator David Dafinone.

Also honoured yesterday was Mr. Jim Ovia, the chairman of Zenith Bank plc as businessman of the year while Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was honoured with the Hero of Democracy award.
Leading lights in politics and the professions were present at the ceremony yesterday among whom were Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

Yesterday’s award ceremony elicited measured response from the audience when the governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle embraced his predecessor, Aremo Segun Osoba twice. He first embraced him just before the commencement of the ceremony and after he picked up his award.

Yesterday’s award ceremony was flagged off at 7.30 p.m with opening remarks presented by the General Manager/Editor in Chief of Vanguard Media Limited, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye who referenced the award as the epitome of recognition to men and women of excellence in the professions.

Following him the chairman of the ceremony, Oba Otudeko described the award ceremony as one of the most auspicious events of the year.

He praised the exemplary efforts of the awardees in their various endeavours.

In his speech, President Buhari who was represented by the minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said:

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let me use this opportunity to tell our compatriots that this Administration is keenly aware of the difficulties they are facing at this time, resulting mostly from the fuel scarcity, poor power supply, inflation etc.

“As a government that was propelled into office by the power of the people, we cannot but feel the pains of our compatriots, and we deeply empathise with them. We are working round the clock to ease the pains of Nigerians, and the efforts of the government have started yielding fruits as we seek to make the petroleum products available nationwide, restore gas supply to the power generating firms, reflate the economy and put Nigerians back to work.

“We understand that Nigerians have started questioning whether this indeed is the CHANGE they voted for, while some have even gone as far as saying that by voting for our party, Nigerians have entered one chance.

“Well, I can tell Nigerians that our CHANGE AGENDA is real, and that indeed, they will get the change they voted for. Nigerians have not entered One Chance, because the One Chance drivers and their conductors have been driven out of town.

“While we cannot but provide context for the challenges being faced by our countrymen and women today, in the sense that it has taken years of mismanagement, corruption and inefficiency to get to this sorry pass, we make no excuses. After all the people voted for us so we can correct the mistakes of the past and enthrone good governance.

We are doing just that. But we want our compatriots to realize that 16 years of rot cannot be cleaned up overnight. It is much easier to destroy than to build. But we are determined to rebuild our country and to make life more abundant for our people.

“Change is a process, and that process has begun. We commend Nigerians for their perseverance. We urge them not to lose their confidence in the ability of this Administration to bring about the much-needed change.

The pains of today are temporary, and will soon give way to abundance joy as we put our country firmly on the path of sustainable growth and development.”

The president also lauded what he described as the salutary role of the media in the development of the country’s democracy.

UNILAG Students Jump Over Gate To Vacate Premises After Shutdown

By     No comments:

The Senate of the University of Lagos in a circular posted to various notice boards yesterday morning, gave students till 10am to vacate their halls of residence “in order to avoid further breakdown of law and order”.
Students of the institution had on Wednesday 7 April, 2016, embarked on a protest to register their displeasure over poor living conditions occasioned by inadequate power and water supply.
Following the expiration of the deadline, the hostel and school gates were locked with students still in the premises.
In a move reminiscent of Hollywood action movies, the students, both male and female alike resorted to flying over the gate.
