Power Generation Now Over 4,300MW

By     1 comment:
electricitynigerialimitedly

Power generation in the country has risen to a peak 4,387 megawatts as at Friday, March 4, 2016 with a prospect for further improvement in power supply situation.
The Head, Public Affairs Department at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Usman Abba Arabi, said that this is following successful repair work on the damaged gas facility earlier in the week.
“It would be recalled that the peak generation level that notched epoch 5,070 megawatts few weeks ago suddenly nosedived due to inadequate gas supply on the main gas pipeline supplying many of the power stations.
“This was on account of gas supply shortage due to inability to evacuate condensates and oil produced with the gas because the main oil export pipeline out of Forcados was vandalized two weeks ago.
“However, with the successful repair work on the damaged facility, the system is now ramping up as it attains 4,387 megawatts peak generation as at Friday, March 4, 2016,” he said.
The acting Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Anthony Akah, has subsequently appealed to members of the public to cooperate with electricity industry operators and security agencies to stem the recent incident of vandalism on electricity installation.
He also warned the electricity distribution companies that the momentary downturn in supply should not be used to exploit unmetered electricity customers on estimated billing saying, “Customer bills for unmetered customers should be as accurate as possible and reflect their actual consumption. It shall in no circumstance be arbitrarily inflated.”

MTN blames Nigeria fine as profits down 37%

By     No comments:

African telecommunications giant MTN says profits fell 37 per cent in 2015 largely because of a hefty fine imposed by Nigerian regulators.
The South African-based multinational’s report posted online Friday says it cut off 4.5 million Nigerian subscribers last month.
That is in addition to 6.7 million Nigerian and 3.7 million Ugandan subscribers disconnected last year under new regulations requiring the registration of cellphone SIM cards.
MTN Group Limited says it has set aside nearly $600 million against the $3.9 billion Nigerian fine for failing to deactivate unregistered cards, which is under negotiation.
Overall, the company earned 23.57 billion rand ($1.54 billion) on revenue of 147.06 billion rand.
Nigeria is MTN’s biggest market with about 60 million subscribers before the disconnections. MTN now reports 232.5 million subscribers in 22 countries.

Niger-Delta Militants Bomb Pipeline In Under Water Attack

By     No comments:

A sophisticated attack on a sub-sea pipeline in Nigeria’s Delta might herald a return to the kind of widespread militant violence that crippled the oil industry in Africa’s top producer less than a decade ago.

Attacks on oil facilities have been on the rise in the swamps since President Muhammadu Buhari vowed to shake up a fraud-ridden amnesty program for rebels who stopped blowing up pipelines in 2009 in exchange for cash and generous contracts.

Adding a new dimension, unknown militants – probably using divers – hit a Shell underwater pipeline last month, interrupting oil flows and forcing the company to shut down its 250,000 barrel-a-day Forcados export terminal for weeks.

Nigeria-based diplomats and security experts say the attack showed a level of skill and inside intelligence rarely seen since the 2004-2009 insurgency, which at its height halved Nigeria’s oil output of around 2 millions barrels a day.

“This was an attack that required knowledge of the area and sophisticated equipment,” said a Western security source, asking not to be named. “There were underwater attacks before but none recently. The oil firms are really worried there will be more.”

Militants tend to attack small overland pipelines or flow stations sitting in hard-to-access mosquito-infested creeks.

The underwater attack has cut 15 percent of Nigerian crude output, dealing another blow to Buhari, who is already having to cope with a collapse of oil revenues due to falling prices, a Boko Haram jihadist insurgency in the north and secessionist calls in the southeast.

The strike came a month after authorities issued an arrest warrant for former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, better known as Tompolo.

Like other ex-rebel leaders Tompolo became a millionaire through the amnesty by winning contracts to protect pipelines he used to blow up in his fight for a greater share of Nigeria’s oil wealth. Others made a fortune with massive oil theft.

Buhari has vowed to end over-priced state contracts and crude theft. But in the Delta many ex-fighters see the hunt for Tompolo as part of a campaign by mainly Muslim northerners, like the president, against the Christian south. The government denies any such motive.

The swampland’s oil provides 70 percent of state income but, like much of the rest of Nigeria, the region has never seen much development. Its roads are pot-holed and villages polluted from oil spills.

“Many angry young men still support the militants because the government is not addressing their grievances,” said Alagoa Morris, an environmental activist in the Delta. “They work for anyone who supports them.”

TROOPS

Authorities have responded by sending troops to protect oil facilities, a move residents say might fuel tensions as villagers will likely see them as invaders sent by Buhari.

“The militarization of the Delta makes it worse,” said Morris. “People see that the government is only interested in the oil production, not their grievances.”

A security official said Tompolo’s men were probably behind the sub-sea attack. Activists say it could have been the work of other ex-rebels frustrated about the region’s poverty.

Tompolo has disappeared from public view since the arrest warrant was issued, and his spokesman, Paul Bebenimibo, could not be reached for comment.

He had links to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), one of the most powerful militant groups, which attacked oil facilities and kidnapped expatriate workers.

A previously unknown group called the Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility, warning Buhari of more trouble unless he fulfils a long list of demands such as starting development and cleaning up polluted villages.

Reuters was unable to contact the group or verify its statement. In total, ten oil and gas pipelines or other facilities have been attacked in the Delta since the start of the year, security experts say.

DELTA

Tension has been building in the Delta since Buhari defeated president Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian southerner from the region, in presidential polls a year ago.

The government has extended the amnesty but vowed to shift the focus to job training and away from cash payments, which in the past were collected by “generals” for their “boys”.

So far, the attacks have not been as severe as the previous insurgency. But diplomats worry that Delta activists are teaming up with secessionists in the southeast, where Ibgo people who proclaimed an independent state called Biafra sparked a 1967-70 civil war in which more than a million people died.

In the Avengers statement, the group demanded the release of a pro-Biafra leader jailed since October.

On Thursday, groups of former militant leaders denounced the pipeline attacks but also urged Buhari to expand the amnesty to “some of our brothers who are still in the creeks” – still a hideout for militants, pirates and kidnappers.

They also told Buhari the amnesty should be extended to 2019 to give young men time to receive job training.

The government has said it wants to set up vocational centers to train up to 10,000 people annually. But little has happened as the oil price slump has undermined spending plans.

Establishment of state police in Nigeria, solution to security crisis - BUHARI

By     No comments:
President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria

Nothing better justifies the need to now collectively push for the establishment of state police in Nigeria than the current security challenges facing the country and for which the police now seems overwhelmed. It is now common knowledge that the security of life and properties of the citizens remains a cardinal objective of setting up a government.
Nigeria, a country of an estimated 174.2 million people only grapples with 370,000 policemen with analysts estimating the ratio of one policeman to 100,000 citizens. Even a machine or robot would not be effective when thrown into use in this kind of a situation. It is even worsened by the fact that politicians and political office holders, top businessmen and wealthy Nigerians have policemen posted to serve them, thus further depleting the ranks against the citizens who are now forced to resort to self-help.
In many streets in various communities, residents now employ the services of vigilantes or night watchmen, many of whom are not even trained for the task but simply see the job as an opportunity to earn money for themselves and their families.
The average duty of the police is to maintain internal security but undoubtedly, the lack of adequate police officers partly and effectively gives hoodlums, criminals and the criminally minded the opportunity to strike at will given every little circumstance.
However, while some even argue about poor funding of the police, it is widely known that the police system itself is made of more ‘rotten eggs’ than even imagined. If not, how would a security system paid with public fund employ officers who become public enemies? How could a policeman suddenly turn his gun at innocent Nigerians over a little provocation? We daily hear sour tales of this sort.
It is awful to note that among every 10 Nigerians, at least, eight have a resentment for the police because of some unsavoury experiences with the law enforcement agency. At least, seven out of every 10 believe that the police is a foe and not a ‘friend’ as the force largely wants to make people believe.
As it is now, there is hardly any state in Nigeria that has not been enveloped in one form of security challenge or the other, the latest being the lives and properties destroyed in the Mile 12 area and its environs in Lagos, a former capital of Nigeria and Africa’s business hub on Thursday.
Many of the residents accused the police of looking the other way until much harm had been done and the Governor of the state, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, declared a curfew later in the evening.
We recall with much sadness the abduction of three students in their school in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos on Monday while they were preparing for their examination. According to parents of the girls, it took the police time to brace up for the search of the students. According to them, this was why it became difficult to track the children immediately.
The Agatu communities in Benue State have now been rendered homeless as a result of the nefarious activities of cattle herdsmen. Their plight did not start today, but what had been the role of the police in maintaining peace in the area? It is not just enough to rush into a crisis scene, restore peace and leave the people to their fate till crisis erupts again. Why shouldn’t there be constant enlightenment?
Just like many other Nigerians, we urge the Federal Government, particularly the National Assembly, to begin to look into the possibility for states to establish their policing system. The Nigerian Governors’ Forum must also commence agitation in this regard. Apart from helping to curb insecurity, it would also help reduce unemployment. State police is the panacea to the numerous security challenges the nation is grappling with now.

P-Square Globacom said in a statement in Lagos, on Thursday that P-Square remained with the company as brand ambassadors.

The telecom company disclosed that the annual review of its brand endorsement contracts was only just taking place and so could not have terminated its contract with PSquare.

“We have not disengaged PSquare or any of our other ambassadors. We are currently in the process of reviewing our contracts with the brand ambassadors,” the statement said.

The national carrier stated that PSquare had been among its flagship brand ambassadors since 2010, and that it had been a mutually rewarding relationship between the two parties.

“We are proud of the role Globacom has played in the rapid upward trajectory of the musical career of these incredibly talented twin brothers,” the company said. “Globacom has also played a similar role in the exposure and economic empowerment of all the Nigerian entertainers, and others from neighbouring countries, who worked with us as brand ambassadors,” the statement added.

Imo state governor,Rochas Okorocha Flees Nigeria As EFCC Queries Diversion of 2bn bailout

By     No comments:

Imo state governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, has jetted out of the country as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) beams the searchlight on the alleged diversion of over N2 billion from the bailout fund given to the state by the federal government for the payment of civil servants salaries.

The EFCC had rounded up three senior aides of the governor in connection of the diversion of the bailout money.

Those arrested by the commission included the principal secretary to the governor, Dr. Paschal Obi, who was until his appointment a deputy director in the Ministry of Health, in charge of optical services, Director of Finance, Government House, Casmir Uzoho, and Government House Treasurer, Iheoma Kenneth.

Okorocha, who had expressed regrets for accessing the bailout fund from the federal government lamented that the money had put the state in a mess.

According to him, the N26 billion the state took from the Federal Government that was used to pay agitating workers has put Imo in trouble as more money is being deducted from the state’s federal allocation than anticipated.

7 Buhari Ministers That Are Doing Absolutely Nothing

By     No comments:
\
President Muhammadu Buhari had on 11th November, 2015 assigned portfolios to 36 ministers who are expected to implement his ‘change’ agenda.

Presiding at the swearing in ceremony of the new ministers, Buhari said that the assigning of portfolios was done to put square pegs in square holes, adding that members of his team were carefully chosen and assigned portfolios to reflect their capacities.

More than 3 months after the ministers were assigned portfolios, some have refused to come out of their shell.

Top sources within some ministries have posited that most of Buhari’s ministers are technically unfit for some of the ministries they were posted to, and have continued to make blunders and have become stumbling blocks to the administrations ‘change’ agenda.

Post-Nigeria gathered that President Buhari is said to be under intense pressure from some ‘powerful’ forces, including his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, to “undertake a cleansing of the Federal Executive Council, FEC.”

As part of the impending restructuring, the following ministers have been seen to be doing nothing and many have recommended for their immediate disengagement before they lead the Buhari administration astray.

Geoffrey Onyeama – Minister of foreign affairs

Many had hoped that he would wield in his international expertise into Buhari’s agenda, however, more than 3 months after his appointment as the minister of foreign affairs, Nigeria as the giant of Africa still does not have a focused foreign policy agenda.

The failure to manage Buhari’s public and international perception has been traced to the lack of a foreign policy agenda.

If a nation’s foreign policy is understood as the expression of its national interests vis-à-vis other countries, it follows that foreign policy decisions need to be made and expressed and should not be left only with the so called Buhari’s ‘body language’.

Aisha Alhassan – Minister of women affairs

“Mama Taraba” was reported to have told the grieving chibok parents that they were not invited, during their visit to the villa. She was also reported to have told them that, the girls were not kidnapped under the current government, “so why are you harassing us?” As if the diatribe was not enough, Minister Alhassan reminded them: “You wanted schools, you wanted hospitals, you wanted this and that… you wanted so many things.”

As a minister of women affairs, many had expected that she would have been at the fore front of the chibok agenda. She has no doubt failed to carry the women folks along. Hence, there is an urgent need to find a suitable replacement.

Kayode Fayemi – Minister of solid minerals

The former governor of Ekiti state shocked many when he was assigned his portfolio as he was reported to have said that he would need time to learn in his ministry. An admission that nothing much should be expected from him as he did not envisage he would be posted to the ministry of solid minerals.

More than 3 months after he was assigned the portfolio, the former governor is yet to convince Nigerians that he is the right man for the job.

Lai Mohammed – Minister of Information and culture

He is a specialist in image laundering; he has refused to move on from the days of political campaigns. His public statements have done nothing, but dent the public image of the Buhari administration. He speaks on every issue, even though he does not have the right information, he would always speak.

He has continued to blame the previous government for the failures of the Buhari administration. He once said the 2016 budget was not padded, whereas the President admitted that his budget was padded. Many believe the former spokesperson of the APC would be more productive if he returns as the spokesperson of his party.

The current state of the economy is enough for the minister of finance to resign her position. The confusion within the economy especially on policy statements has been attributed to her inability to steer the ship of the Nigerian economy.

More than 3 months after she was handed the portfolio as the minister of finance, many Nigerians have become worst of, as poverty and hardship are now the order of the day.

Adebayo Shittu – Minister of Communications

The controversy surrounding the MTN fine has exposed the lack of managerial qualities of the Minister of Communications.

The hullabaloo trailing the role of the Ministry in the out-of-court settlement by MTN Nigeria, and its payment of N50 billion to the Federal Government still remains unaddressed. It is worthy to note that the telecommunications regulatory organ, the Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC, has been shielded away from the settlement process.

What other reason do we need to convince us that the minister of communications seems to be finding it difficult with his current portfolio.

Muhammadu Buhari – Minister of Petroleum Resources

He has been tagged the junketer-in-chief for his frequent foreign trips, which are still yet to yield benefits to many Nigerians. Many have forgotten that he is the current minister of petroleum resources and hence should be held responsible for the frequent fuel scarcity in the country.

The best decision Buhari must make is for him to relinquish his position as a minister, because his effect has not been felt, more than three months after.

No Past Glory! Siasia Vows To Use Only Fit Players Against Egypt

By     No comments:

Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia has promised to ensure that only very fit players make it into the team list of the players to face the Pharoah’s of Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers slated for Kaduna on March 25.

Speaking on Friday, Siasia said a player’s past results would not matter in the drawing up of the final list, only the fitness exhibited in training ahead of the match.

“These are two matches that we have to win. There would be no looking at what someone had done in the past, or current form at club level. If you are doing well at your club at the moment and you can’t show ferocious form in training and ability to adapt to the environment, then you would have no place.

“I am excited at the debate that has been generated by the team list. You can never satisfy everyone. The important thing is that we know the players we want for these big games and we have invited them, and we believe in them to deliver.

“I am excited at the debate that has been generated by the team list. You can never satisfy everyone. The important thing is that we know the players we want for these big games and we have invited them, and we believe in them to deliver,” Siasia said on Friday.

Graphic pics: The aftermath of Agatu attack: Burnt corpses and houses and invading herdsmen

By     No comments:

Dozens were killed and many houses razed to the ground when suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked villages in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State last week.  Ikwulono John Anthony visited Agatu on Wednesday, March 2 and revealed the things he saw.

Below is what he wrote along with the photos
"I took the risk and came to Agatu together with the delegation from presidency where we visited Obagaji, Egba, Aila, Adagbo, Okokolo, Akwu, Ugboju, Odugbeho, Odejo.
Entire villages were burnt down completely by fulani herdsmen, unidentified corpses of Agatu were discovered, properties were looted by invaders, as I speak fulani herdsmen are camping in the deserted villages. I couldn't believe what my eyes saw.
Fellow Nigerians, if government did not wade into the Agatu crisis immediately by camping military in the crisis areas, then the hope of an Agatu man or woman is gone.
President Buhari, Governor Ortom, Governor Almakura, You must act now not later. I am weeping for my people as I am reporting from Agatu. Fulanis were seeing with surfiscated weapons, face to face some of them ran but some did not. This is barbaric"
