I Haven’t Found The Right Man – Genevieve Nnaji

By     No comments:

Newest movie producer in town, Genevieve Nnaji, speaks with CHUX OHAI about her new film and plans for the future

At a time many movie fans in Africa are wondering if she has called it quits with film acting, celebrated actress, Genevieve Nnaji, just announced the arrival of her own movie after what seems like a long hiatus from the lighted screen.

Titled ‘Road to Yesterday’, the movie is produced by the actress – funded straight from her own pocket with additional support from AfricanMagic, as she claims in an interview with our correspondent. But it is written and directed by Ishaya Bako.

Explaining why it has taken her a long time to join the growing ranks of new generation movie producers in the country, Genevieve says, “I chose to be an actress. Acting was what I had always wanted to do. I don’t think that I ever imagined myself producing a film. I love acting. If the Nigerian movie industry was as stable as it should be, I probably would have been on the set of a movie every day of my life and not be bothered about what goes on behind the camera. So it is a matter of choice and preference.”

Genevieve plays the lead role in ‘Road to Yesterday’ alongside Ghanaian actor, Majid Michel. Chioma Omeruah, Ebele Okaro and Oris Ehuero, among others featured in the movie.

Apart from Majid and Ebele, most of the actors and actresses are not part of the regular Nollywood crowd. Genevieve tells our correspondent that the departure from the ‘old’ crowd is deliberate.

She says, “It is part of our effort to open up Nollywood to more newcomers and to create opportunities for people who are very talented and who have the passion for this job. This is why we have somebody like Ishaya Bako in the team.”

But to the disappointment of those who have for long expected Genevieve to choose a life partner and finally walk down the aisle, marriage does not seem to be in her agenda yet. Asked when she would finally take the plunge, the actress replies that contrary to speculations, she has not ruled out marriage. But that she would make up her mind as soon as she meets the right person.

“I haven’t found the right man yet. When he comes, I’ll get married,” she says.

There have been rumors spreading that both comedians have not been on good terms; due to the breakdown in their relationship, AY has not been to any of Basketmouth’s recent shows.
In an interview with Encomium, Basketmouth laid all the rumors to rest. “It’s really all speculation” he said.“I maintain a good relationship with all my colleagues, and it’s really not feasible to feature every comedian on my shows.
If that were the criteria, it would be fair to say I am not on talking terms with Gordons, Julius Agwu, Basorge, Seyi Law to mention a few, as they have not featured at my shows recently” he further said.

African Union appoints Buhari To Lead Anti-corruption Fight In Africa

By     No comments:

The African Union Advisory Board on Corruption [AUABC] has unanimously adopted President Muhammadu Buhari to play a leading role in efforts to rid Africa of corruption.
A member of the Board of the organisation, Isa Ozi Salami, disclosed this in Lagos on Thursday during the formal launch of Nigeria’s foremost association of publishers of online newspapers, the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers [GOCOP].

The African Union Advisory Board on Corruption is an autonomous organ established within the African Union [AU], in terms of Article 22 of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption.

The main mandate of the Board is to promote and encourage the adoption of measures and actions by State Parties to prevent, detect, punish and eradicate corruption and related offences in Africa as well as to follow-up on the application of those measures and submit a report to the Executive Council on a regular basis on the progress made by each State Party in complying with the provisions of the Convention.

Experts believe corruption is widespread in many African countries, with a High-Level Panel on Illicit Financial Flow saying African nations lose between $50 and $60 billion annually through illicit financial flow.

Mr. Salami, who represented the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences [ICPC], Ekpo Nta, at the GOCOP launch, said Mr. Buhari emerged the continent’s preferred leader to lead a vigorous anti-corruption war during the last AUABC meeting held in Arusha, Tanzania.
“At the second meeting of the board of AUABC in Arusha, Tanzania, the headquarters of the board, we resolved that on corruption in Africa, we needed to adopt a champion for salvaging the continent from the evils of corruption, Mr. Salami, who was elected to the board of the organisation last year, said.
“And President Muhammadu Buhari was the person we unanimously endorsed for that purpose.”

Mr. Salami, also a member of the board of the ICPC, said the endorsement of Mr. Buhari for such important continent-wide campaign had far reaching implications, which among other things, showed that Africa was beginning to reckon with the Nigerian leader in his renewed fight against corruption in his own country.

He also said the endorsement of Mr. Buhari showed that Nigeria was again returning to her leadership position on the continent.

“It means that Africa is beginning to give Nigeria its right leadership status and respecting Nigeria for the efforts our new leadership on anti graft crusade,” Mr. Salami said.

President Buhari has since May 29 this year, when he assumed office, emerged one of Africa’s loudest advocates of a corruption-free society, vowing repeatedly to prosecute those who plundered his country’s wealth in the past.

In the run-up to the 2015 general elections, Mr. Buhari’s campaign speeches were incomplete without a mention of how corruption had damaged his country and its institutions and how he would turn things around.

“We plan to put priority on tackling corruption which has become blatant and widespread,” he said at one rally, vowing to rescue his country from the “stranglehold” of the PDP, which was in power at the time.

“The rest of the world looks at Nigeria as the home of corruption. Nigeria is a country where stealing is not corruption.”

At his last campaign speech before the presidential election, Mr. Buhari emphasized that his government would have zero tolerance for corruption.

“I will set a personal example and run a government that truly serves the people rather than serve themselves and a privileged few,” he said at the time.

“Like I have repeatedly maintained that if Nigeria does not kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria,” he warned.

At a speech he gave at the United Nations in September, Mr. Buhari called on the international community to urgently redouble its efforts to strengthen mechanisms for dismantling safe havens for proceeds of corruption.

Addressing world leaders at the 70th General Assembly of the UN, the Nigerian leader also urged his counterparts to do more to return stolen funds and assets to their countries of origin.

Observing that corruption, cross-border financial crimes, cyber crimes and human trafficking are major challenges of the 21st century which the international community must work collectively to overcome, President Buhari reaffirmed his administration’s determination to frontally confront the twin evils of corruption and illicit financial outflows.

South Africa Student Uproar : Biggest Violence Since Apartheid

By     No comments:
sa

Twenty-nine South Africans have been charged with public violence in the biggest student protest to hit the country since apartheid ended in 1994. Police again fired stun grenades to disperse students in Cape Town, a day after protesters stormed the parliamentary complex.
Thousands have also descended on the governing party’s headquarters in the main city, Johannesburg. The students are angry with a proposed increase in tuition fees. The demonstrations began last week at Johannesburg’s prestigious University of the Witwatersrand, and have since spread across the country, forcing the closure of some of South Africa’s top universities.
On at least two occasions, police foiled attempts by the protesters to reach the headquarters of the governing African National Congress (ANC), pushing them back to their campuses. But the students regrouped and finally reached the building, named Luthuli House after South Africa’s first Nobel Peace laureate Albert Luthuli.
The students are singing and chanting anti-apartheid songs, invoking memories of the decades-long campaign which led to the overthrow of the apartheid regime in 1994. Traffic is gridlocked in the area. The ANC has pulled out its election truck and seem to be wiring a loud speaker. It is unclear clear at this stage who will be addressing the crowd.

36 Ministers Too Much For Nigeria, Says Rep

By     No comments:
Ministerial-nominees-confirmed

A member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Mark Gbilah, has described as “too much”, the appointment of 36 ministers in one fell swoop by an administration that needs to cut costs.
Gbilah (PDP/Gwer/Gwer West Federal Constituency), proffered an amendment of the section of the 1999 Constitution which provided for the appointment of ministers from each state of the federation in order to allow for staggered appointments of ministers from states.
Speaking with journalists in Makurdi, the Benue State capital yesterday, Rep Gbilah said there was need to trim down the number of ministerial appointees at a time, so that the cost of governance could be reduced.
He said: “Our Constitution is rather ambiguous in the issue of Ministerial appointments. That provision says we require one Minister from each state of the federation in an administration, but it did not say it should be all at one time”.
“I could have staggered it. There is need to look into the possible amendment of that section of the constitution. What I mean is that the constitution would have made provision for staggered appointments in such a manner that some states would produce Ministers within a specified periods and others would also do likewise within another period. So that we do not have so many Ministers at one time.
“There is need to look into that constitutional provision, we are all clamouring for the reduction of expenditure and cutting down on the cost of governance, we must not be compelled to make provision for two Ministers in Ministries, we are totally against that.
“36 is even too much. They keep complaining of the National Assembly but you never stop to look at the retinue of staff of the Minister. The cost of the maintenance of the office of the Minister.
“The special accommodation, the official engagements and all the rest of it.  It’s quite capital intensive. So I do not believe in the present arrangement, in fact they are too much. That constitutional provisions needs to be looked into for possible amendment”.

Two women reportedly strip and danced naked just to win old iPhone in a nightclub

By     No comments:

Two women jumped up on stage and stripped naked 'for the chance to win an old iPhone '. One of the ladies who was reported to be married stripped off her clothes and gyrated in front of stunned club guests.
At one point the MC snatched away the underwear of one of the contestants as she tried to cover her modesty, instead throwing them into the crowd.

As she turns around to face the other way she wiggles her bottom to the music and is joined on stage by a second woman.

The bizarre dance contest took place in the city of Berezniki in central Russia's Perm Krai region with an iPhone 5s reportedly being offered as a prize.
But their amateur dancing, which was uploaded onto social media, got negative attention.
